Ephesians 6:10-18: The Armor of God: Deeper than The Battle
The Learners: The intended audience for this passage is middle school
students, which is kids anywhere from 12-15 years old. It was not until
this time in my life that I ever heard this passage, so the students
should be relatively new to the concept of the armor of God.
Exegetical Idea: We as Christians are called to look at the value of the
pieces of metaphoric armor, and connect them spiritually to how we
live our lives for Christ. We are also to look forward to the battle
against Satan and dark forces as believers.
Pedagogical Idea: After my lesson, the students listening should be
able to identify the pieces that make up the armor of God, as well as
ways to apply the metaphorical armor to their literal lives. They should
also have a basic understanding of the spiritual battle this passage
refers to.

Heady- Identify the meaning of the specific pieces of armor, what

they do, and understand the connected terms.
Handy- Dig deeper and understand what it looks like to put on
The Armor of God today.
Hearty- After looking at each piece of armor, and understanding the
armor, identify which piece of armor needs to be worked on the most in
their life, and also come up with specific ways to do so.

HOOK:
Supplies Needed:
Loose Leaf Paper (1 Ream)
Helmet
Sword
Belt
Sandals
Breast Plate
Shield
(if none of these are obtainable for your ministry, fashion replicas out
of paper and cardboard. It is the image that matters.)
Procedure:
Select 2 STUDENTS from the audience to come up on stage
Dress 1 student in ALL of the armor
Leave the other student in their street clothes
Begin distributing paper to the audience to crumple into balls
After the student is dressed, ask the students in the audience
Which student will be able to protect themselves better from
your paper? The intended response should be for the student
fashioned in armor with a shield.
Count to three and allow the students to throw the paper at both
volunteers.
Once the excitement is over, have the students return to their seats
and open up in prayer, asking God to bless the time and lesson to
come.
Transition: Now that we understand the importance of armor in
battle, it is important to understand what kind of armor right? And
we also need to know who we are fighting dont we? Lets open up
the scriptures and see!

BOOK: After the activity, the students will be eager to make the
connection between the demonstration and the lesson. Open up by
reading Ephesians 6:10-18. We want this experience to be interactive,
so rather than explaining the meaning of each piece of armor to the
students, begin handing out a sheet with the following illustration.

This illustration will aid in the visualization of the armor. Break up the
passage into the pieces of armor, and form groups for the students to
work in. Once they are in their groups, assign a specific piece of the
armor to each group and ask them to use the passage as well as the
term guide in the back of their bibles to discover what the piece
represents. Because of the range of age, it may be more difficult for
some students to understand than others, so work to find common
definition and understanding using the groups discussion. Once each
group is done, come back together and reiterate what each group
discovered. (the illustration also serves as a starting place for meaning
in this discussion)

Armor Purpose: Protection from Weapons
Faith: Being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we do not
see.
Transition: Now that we understand what the bible says, we cant stop
here! We have to dig deeper and understand what this means. We
would look a little ridiculous if we all just walked around in medieval
armor everyday wouldnt we? I dont think thats what God us asking
us to do.
LOOK: Once the students seem to be on the same page with what the
scripture says, it is time to dig deeper. The next step is to get the
students to understand WHY we need armor. The rest of the scripture
is about the spiritual warfare we will face against Satan in the coming
days, and needs to be addressed too. Compare the balls of paper
during the demonstration to things in our lives that can turn us away
from God such as our sins. Have the students once again break into
their groups and discuss how their piece of armor can aid in the fight
against sin and evil.
Ex. The Belt of Truth: through speaking truth, we are able to share
Gods word rather than Satans lies.
Transition: It is through the application of the armor into our own lives
that we learn how to battle against Satan and his schemes. We cant
begin to fight if we dont understand how to improve and protect
ourselves first.
TOOK: Once the discussion of what the armor is helping us to fight, it
is time for each student to look within himself or herself and
understand the application of the armor.

Ask the students to identify which piece of armor they are the
least familiar with, or the one that they struggle the most with.
(Ex. The Belt of Truth: Because I often lie)

Follow up this question by asking each student to reflect on how

they can improve their understanding and carrying out of this
piece of armor in their life. Make sure that they are specific and
reasonable with actions that they can carry out on a daily basis
(Ex. The Belt of Truth: Begin telling the truth to my parents, or

Sword of The Word: reading my bible daily for 30 minutes to
understand it better).
Conclusion: As Christians we are called to put on the armor of God. It is
once we understand the armor as well as the battle that we can
discover ways to protect ourselves from Satan, as well as fight back. It
is when we have faith, truth, the word, salvation, readiness, and
righteousness, that we cannot be defeated in the battle.
