Youll never miss an event again thanks to the

Moorabool 365 calendar.
The annual event brochure, which is designed to
highlight year-round activities in Moorabool Shire, was
recently printed by Council and launched in Bacchus
Marsh last week.
Whilst events held between January and August
are highlighted in the first brochure, the SeptemberDecember events will be printed in the coming months.
The change from a yearly calendar to a seasonal one
enables more event organisers to ensure their event is
included, and will keep the publication as up to date as
possible.
The illustration on the front of the calendar was
designed by local Bacchus Marsh artist and illustrator
Megan Grant, who runs her own freelance business
from home.
Moorabool Mayor Cr Allan Comrie said the calendar
was a must-have for residents and visitors planning on
attending events in the Shire.
We have many wonderful events in the Shire
markets, food events, festivals, horse events, art shows,
music performances each one of them is featured in
this colourful calendar, he said.
Key distribution points of the Moorabool 365 calendar
include the Bacchus Marsh Visitor Information
Centre, Regional Visitor Information Centres, selected
community facilities in villages throughout Moorabool
Shire, participating local businesses and selected retail
outlets, tourism operators including accommodation
venues and industry networks, including the
Daylesford Macedon Ranges Regional Tourism Board.
Anyone wanting a copy can pick one up from any of
the places above, as well as councils service centres in
Ballan, Darley and Lerderderg Library, Bacchus Marsh.

Furness is hot
new jockey
By Kate Taylor
Shes 24, shes from Ballan
and shaping up to be the
states next leading female
jockey.
Kassie Furness has just
started an apprenticeship
with Racing Victoria but
she comes to it with 60 wins
and the Tamworth Cup under her belt.
Starting her riding career
at the Ballan Pony Club
and local polocrosse events,
Furness picked up work
as a stable hand for Patrick
Payne racing before heading
interstate for her career and
has now returned home to
Ballan much to the delight
of mum Kathy.
Its wonderful to have her
home, Kathy said.

Weighing in at 51kg, and

with prize money from her
rides totalling $930,672, Furness has had 681 starts with
60 wins, 63 seconds and 63
thirds
Furness joined RVs Apprentice Jockey Training
Program for her fourth year
- because of licensing laws,
her two years in Queensland and year in New South
Wales racing didnt equate to
an immediate transfer onto
the Victorian racing scene.
She will be apprenticed
to Brent Stanley at Sutton
Grange, near Bendigo, as
one of six female apprentices
inducted into the state-wide
program this year.
Its very exciting, its a big
step. Ive just gone into my

fourth year now so I have a

little bit of racing experience
behind me, so hopefully I
can take that with me into
Racing Victoria, Kassie
said.
In welcoming the aspiring
jockeys, seven in total, into
the program, RVs Athlete
Development and Industry
Careers Advisor, Melissa
Weatherley, said students
would be given extensive
coaching to further develop
the skills, relationships and
experience necessary to succeed at the highest level.
These young riders will
not only hone their race riding skills, but learn how to
live, eat and train as elite
the Mill Cottage : restaurant & cafe
sports people.
Draft 7
It is also pleasing to receive

such strong interest from female riders to participate in

the program with six young
women being inducted.
Females now make up 23
out of 50 apprentices participating in the AJTP across the
four year levels.
Furness has 60 career winners to her name in New
South Wales, highlighted by
claiming the 2013 Tamworth
Cup aboard Prussian Secret
- and was back in the race
saddle recently at Hanging
Rock, claiming fourth place
in her first outing of the new
year and her new apprenticeship. A week later she
claimed a win at Kyneton
and then at Bendigo another
win on Saturday 6 February, both wins aboard Mr
Cooley.

Assistance continues to be sought and

given to those affected by the Scotsburn
bushfire.
Free campsites have been offered to fire
victims by the Ballan Caravan Park, as well
as at the Port Fairy caravan park, a popular
holiday spot.
The Ballan offer also included free sites for
Blaze Aid volunteers, while the Port Fairy
offer was made by Moyne Shire Council
including up to and after the Labour Day
weekend, with sites also offered to victims of
the Great Ocean Road fires.
Meanwhile, Central Ward Councillor Paul
Tatchell raised the issue in Urgent Business
at the February council meeting the first
for 2016 asking that council write to the
state government seeking further financial
support for those affected.
We need to ask if further relief can be
provided rates, fire levies, land taxes etc.
losing their home and land is losing their
means of making a living, and rebuilding
can take one or two years or more. It makes
it difficult in terms of cash flow we need
a report to go back to the state government
to say give us some relief on this one, Cr
Tatchell said.
Council CEO Rob Croxford said the State
Government are to be commended for the
high level of support shown to the Scotsburn
community to date.
Following Wednesday nights council
meeting, Council Officers will talk to
the Regional Recovery Committee about
Government support for some additional
relief for fire affected residents from rates,
fire services levy, waste levy and land tax,
Mr Croxford said.
A post-impact assessment report tabled at
the meeting stated that in total in Moorabool,
nine houses were lost, one house was
damaged to the point of being uninhabitable,
one house was damaged but is habitable, 55
outbuildings were lost including hay sheds,
wool sheds, bungalows and cabins, as well as
4000 animals having to be destroyed and 60
water tanks needing repair.
The report stated that council is now focusing
on supporting the Scotsburn community
through the clean up and rebuilding, with
recovery initiatives and assistance with
rates payments available, while residents are
being kept up to date on progress through
media including bi-weekly newsletters, SMS
and social media updates.

Big Success for Little Moments

by Jane Gardner
What is it about small towns
that they seem to attract
talented, creative people?
The little town of Gordon is
no exception and neither is
its talented, creative resident
Mary-Teresa Ritchie.
Mary-Teresa, an artist who
works predominantly in
pastels, but also uses other
mediums such as oil, pencil,
charcoal and more recently,
permanent marker, opened
her first solo exhibition,
Little Moments at the
Fairbanks Eye Gallery in
Ballarat. The opening was
attended by an enthusiastic
crowd of family, friends
and art lovers alike, many
of whom feature in the art
work.
Little Moments is a
collection of small drawings
each one no bigger than a
playing card completed
over a 12 month period.
Mary-Teresa
describes
her Little Moments as, a
reaction to being encouraged
for most of my artistic life to
draw on a larger and larger
scale, however it dawned on
me that I prefer to draw small
and as art is supposed to be
a form of self-expression,
I should feel free to draw
in whatever size I choose.
From there, Mary-Teresas
impressive collection of 212

Exhibition guest, Deputy
Mayor Paul Tatchell said
of the brightly coloured
drawings, I reckon theyre
great! They remind me of
my youth, growing up with

[1960s animated Beatles

Mary-Teresa is a member of
the Moorabool Artists Group
(MAGnet), the Wombat
Arts Network and the
Ballarat Society of Artists.

She has exhibited in group

exhibitions at the MoorArt
Space Gallery in Bacchus

Darleys Jake Edwards will reignite his VFL
playing career this season.

The 28-year-old was among one of the

first signings to Geelongs VFL list for 2016.
Edwards has spent the past four years as a
Devil in the BFL, taking out the Henderson
Medal in the leagues 2013 best and fairest
and playing a part in Darleys premiership
victory in 2015.

The key position player said he didnt

expect to miss top-level footy when he
started pre-season in Geelong, however was
now looking forward to the opportunity.
Honestly, I am very very excited. It is also a
little bit daunting as I feel like I am learning
the game again, given that I have been out
of this level for about five years. The playing
group is so young and there is a lot of talent
here, so I can see the club themselves having
a pretty successful year and that in itself is
very exciting, he said.

As a teenager, Edwards played TAC Cup

football with the Western Jets and was
selected in the 2005 AFL National Draft
by the Carlton Football Club. He made his
senior debut in the opening game of the 2008
season against Richmond, and played five
games for the season before being delisted
in 2009.
Edwards played 14 games with Carltons
VFL-affiliate the Northern Bullants, before
playing for Darley alongside his brother
Jarrod in 2010.
Darley has been absolutely tremendous.
Ever since I announced that I made the
sign back to Geelong it has been quite
overwhelming. The response from everyone
in the club has been so supportive and I
wouldnt expect anything less, he said.

Over the last four to five years the club has

really changed. I think Darley used to have
a bit of a reputation of having a blue collartype, hard edge; but weve noticed that over
the last three or so years there has been a
much bigger focus on not only recruiting
good footballers, but also good people. This
has gone a long way in changing the culture
to what is now very much a family club. I
think there are more kids running around
than adults and that is sensational, the club
is sensational.
Edwards said although he was unsure of
his career in footy, he was looking forward
to bringing a bit of experience to Geelong.
There is a lot of raw and good talent down
there. Having a bit of AFL experience, and
being one of the oldest people there, I think I
will be able to add more of a leadership role
to the team; during training I hope to give as
much input as I can, whilst also performing
on the field.

I dont want to look too far forward, I

have been strongly focused on this year and
getting this contract across the line. If I was
to continue playing long into the future it
would depend on my body, even this level
of training over the last four months is very
demanding.

Do you have an old pair of specs lying around?
The Bacchus Marsh Lions Club is seeking used
spectacles, sunglasses, frames and other equipment
to donate to Sight Australia.
The project is part of the Lions Clubs Worldwide
Eyeglass Recycling Program, which distributes
regraded spectacles to many parts of the world
through Lions and Rotary Clubs and other
humanitarian organisations.
Over 15 years, the Australian program has delivered
2.5 million pairs to countries in the Middle East,
Africa, Europe, Asia and India.
Bacchus Marsh Lions Club member and project
coordinator, Jim LaFranchi said the local club had
been collecting glasses for the past year, sending
around 600 pairs to Queensland for processing.
This project is something we can do that doesnt
cost anybody any money, yet it will greatly benefit
those who dont have access to these things. I think
its definitely worthwhile, he said.
Its an ongoing project so there is no cut off date for
donations, it will keep going as long as people keep
collecting and people keep donating.
Mr LaFranchi said there were seven collection
points in Bacchus Marsh, including Bacchus Marsh
Grammar, College and Primary School, Hospital Op
Shop, St Vincent de Paul Op Shop, Back to Bacchus
Restaurant, the RSL and Darryl Wilson and Associates
located on Grant Street.

Conflicting issues
resolved
By Kate Taylor
A Rowsley family is finally allowed to build a new house.
Council officers originally decided to recommend the refusal of
a permit for the Borg family to build a new house on their land, to
replace a falling down old cottage.
But it was overturned thanks to a motion put forward by East Ward
Councillor John Spain.
The February council meeting heard that the Pedrettis Road property
has a long and complex history; located in an area originally designed
to be part of the Rowsley Township, it has multiple small blocks
conflicting with the modern day use of the area under the farming
zone - and a Restructure Overlay that demands consolidation of
properties.
Owner Daniel Borg addressed the meeting, saying that he had
purchased the land six years ago (after it was subdivided from an
adjoining parcel).
It is obvious the house needs replacing council staff told me in a
meeting that they made a mistake in issuing the permit regarding the
subdivision, Mr Borg told the meeting.
This is not fair or a practical solution. We only own one title of the
land... the house is falling apart and with the arrival of our first child
it is a priority to replace the house. Replacement will not impact the
adjoining land and were not looking to subdivide, and were unable
to purchase the neighbours property to comply with the Restructure
Overlay.
In a move that Cr Toohey described as an excellent outcome, the
alternate motion approves the building of a new home to replace the
cottage, which could be more than 80 years old.
I am not entirely sure how old it is but the earliest built section is
built using very old techniques i.e. timber shingle roofing and badly
deteriorated sapling framing rather than milled timbers. I would
expect it could be more than 80 years old, Mr Borg told council
officers.
It has been built in multiple stages over many decades. It was
apparently a very early caretakers cottage. I was told that at least one
of the wells was ground water supplied but has been filled with waste
items and soil many years ago. There is no functional bore but there
are remnants of multiple brick wells, also very old.

Dear Editor,
In 12 January 2016 edition,
discussion on planning in
Ballan included reference to
the need for a new school.
I would strongly support a
state-of-the-art government
school being aimed for, including excellent sporting
and recreation facilities that
the community could share.
Situated on a very good train
line, the school could service
students from the western
suburbs as well as local and
regional communities.

Dear Editor,
I would like to congratulate
the good work of Councillors Tonia Dudzik and John
Spain at the last Council
meeting (The Moorabool
News, February 9).
They were quick to notice
the extraordinary lapse in
the Moorabool Heritage
Strategy document. The heritage-listed and protected
Bacchus Marsh Avenue of
Honour is approaching its
centenary, and is a superb
feature of our town. This
grand and famous memorial is iconic to our town.
To have neglected to give it

appropriate recognition in
the document requires the
sensibly requested review
and correction, as noted by
the Councillors.

Arson activity heats up

By Jessica Howard
Victoria was a hotspot
for bushfire and arson last
month, with an awareness road show travelling
throughout the state.
Crime Stoppers Victoria,
the Country Fire Authority and Victoria Police led
the program after a worldfirst study was conducted
about community attitudes
towards the reporting of
arson.
The study was undertaken
by a collaborative team led
by Dr Janet Stanley from
Melbourne University and
Dr Paul Read from Monash.
The research, which included findings from seven
Victorian
communities,
revealed that arson caused
more than half of Australias

bushfires and that 93 percent

of respondents would report
a suspect arsonist regardless
of their relationship with the
person.
Crime stoppers Victoria
CEO Samantha Hunter said
reporting arson activity
could help prevent bushfires
and save lives.
Since Victorias Black Saturday, community reporting
of bushfire arson to Crime
Stoppers has increased 290
per cent. Each piece of information provided to Crime
Stoppers is confidential and
is passed directly on to police for their further investigation, she said.
These vital pieces of community information can help
assist police in identifying
persons of interest or quickly eliminating a person from

their enquiries. Every call,

every online report counts.
Despite summer coming to
a close, the CFA Fire Danger
Period, which commenced
in Moorabool on November
9 of last year, does not conclude until May 1 2016.
During this time, a written
permit is required to burn
off grass, undergrowth,
weeds or other vegetation.
This permit may be issued
by the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer or the CFA
District Office.
Lighting a fire in the open
without a permit is an offence and can bring a penalty of over $18,000 and/or
2 months imprisonment. For

For crying out loud

By Jessica Howard
The heart of Bacchus Marsh will
soon be filled with an abundance
of criers but dont worry, because
there wont be any tears.
The Australasian Guild of Town
Criers will hold its 27th Guild
Championships in Moorabool next
month, which will see competitors
from across the nation carry out
the ancient practice of crying.
Participants dressed in full regalia will hail from Victoria, New
South Wales, Canberra and South
Australia to compete for several
trophies.
Held in conjunction with the Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival, criers
will be required to complete two
cries with the theme of the first
being The Home Cry. This gives

each crier the opportunity to promote his or her own town, city or
region. The second cry is themed
on The Harvest Festival.
One of the major trophies includes
the Mayoral Trophy for Best Festival Ambassador, which is awarded to the crier that best promotes
the festival event.
Moorabool Shire town crier Gavin
Barker, who will not be competing
in the event due to the Guild rules,
will be conducting the introductions for the day.
The rules, which are dictated by
the Ancient and Honourable Guild
of Town Criers, will be upheld on
the day by a collection of worldapproved judges.
Spokesperson for the Guild Championships and Town Crier to the

members bid to be host and the

chance to combine it with the Harvest Festival this year made [Bacchus Marsh] the obvious choice,
he said.
Benefits to the region can be
huge, each town crier on their return home will have stories of their
visit. Already I am seeing postings
on Facebook from criers that will
be taking part, and as we know,
social media spreads the word fast
resulting in a lot of exposure for
Bacchus Marsh.
Photo - Australasian Guild of Town criers
City of Victor Harbour, Mike Willett said spectators could expect a
lot of fun, a lot of colour and a lot of

bell ringing.
This is the first time that Bacchus
Marsh will host the event. Guild

Before theyre forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowin in the wind

The answer is blowin in the wind.

Jesus daily work involved teaching the

ways of the Kingdom of God, bringing relief to the suffering and feeding the hungry.
When a woman was accused of adultery and
brought to Jesus so that he would cast his
judgement, he said to her accusers you who
are without sin should cast the first stone.
When the accusers all slinked away, Jesus
told the woman neither do I condemn you.

No condemnation, I like that. If Jesus is God

and he encouraged rather than condemned
people, then that gives me hope. If you are
being bullied, the people attacking you are
very shallow and not worth ruining your life
over.

Each of us will make a difference, either by

closing our eyes to the pain of others, or by
making our voices heard. This is our generation and the world is crying out for people
to stand up and help bring an end to hatred
and injustice. Tens of thousands of people
are being slaughtered every day, and it is not
all right.
It is also our problem when people in Syria,
Iraq, Nigeria and dozens of other countries
are starving, homeless, cold, and facing possible torture. I hope that people will join
with me in saying that this is not alright, and
we need solutions very quickly. I am not a
pacifist, because groups like ISIS can only be
stopped by force. Yes we want genuine refugees to come to Australia, but not pretenders
or queue jumpers. As a Christian Nation we
should care about righting wrongs, and not
just saying that is overseas so its not our
problem.
Either we can say with Doris Day Que Sera,
Sera (whatever will be will be), or echo the
classic from the Byrds a time for peace,
I swear its not too late. Or we could adapt
from the Johnny Cash classic Man in Black
I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for
his crime,
But is there because hes a victim of the times.
I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and
charity,
Why, youd think Hes talking straight to you and
me.

New members
appointed
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and
Planning (DELWP) have announced the appointment
of four additional members
to the Blackwood Crown
Reserves Committee of
Management.
Following an Expression of
Interest process in late 2015,
the four new members were
chosen under a skills-based
selection process to ensure
that members have skills
suitable for managing the
complexities of the seven local reserves.
The new members are Jenni

Panos, Naten Van Gossum,

David White, and Michael
Boyd.
DELWP Land Planning
and Approvals Regional
Manager Grant Hull congratulated the new members
on their appointment to the
committee.
DELWP is committed to
enhancing the value and
community use of public
land and will continue to
support the expanded committee of management to
fulfil its role and responsibilities, Mr Hull said.
The Blackwood reserves

are a significant asset for

the community due to
their number, diversity and
complexity.
The reserves in the Blackwood area vary from the
Mineral Springs which is an
important tourist attraction,
sports ground and pavilion
which provide a hub for local community events, caravan park and the local hall.
The strengthening of the
committee will ensure ongoing appropriate management for these important
reserves into the future.

Court in action
By Steven Barnes
(Work Exp Monash Uni)
A household dispute that
left one woman hospitalised
was heard in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates court last
week.
David Ellis pleaded guilty
to three charges stemming
from an incident on 3 January last year against his partner of 15 years.
The Court heard an argument broke out with the female victim being kicked in
the chest twice, resulting in
the woman being taken to
the Bacchus Marsh Hospital.
The defendant claimed that
the act was in self-defence
after his partner pushed
him, when he was holding
their 18-month old daughter.
Mr. Ellis defence also noted
the difficult circumstances
that were going on in his life
at the time of the initial incident, mainly finding out the
child was not his.
During the case the court
heard that his restraining order conditions were
breached on the 25 August,
2015 after it was alleged his
ex-partner asked him to be
there to visit her daughter
before police removed him
from the property.

Magistrate Mark Stratmann

presided over the case saying he was unimpressed
with both the conduct of the
accused and the woman in
question.
There was an 18 month
old baby in between a dispute between two grown
adults no one really knows
what effect seeing that type
of aggression would have on
the child
Mr. Ellis received a $2067
fine.

A 21 year-old Darley resident has pleaded guilty to

use and possession in the
Bacchus Marsh Magistrates
court last Friday.
Zack Willmott was arrested
on September 5 last year after a vehicle in Darley was
stopped and checked by police, finding over 300 grams
of the drug GHB.
Police arrested two others
at the scene and Mr Willmot
was found on the property
the car was parked at, hiding
behind a shed.
His defence argued that he
is currently clean from his
drug addiction and that he

is seeking help with mental

issues.
In his sentence Magistrate
Robinson said Youre doing all you can to get your
life back on track, and sentenced him to a 12 month
good behavior bond.
In another case last Friday,
Jesse Dardo a Crown security guard, was placed on a 12
month good behavior bond
and ordered to donate $250
to the CFA.
On the 13 October 2015 at
11am outside the Darley
IGA, Mr Dardo was found
with an extendable baton
that at first was believed to
be a gun.
Police seized the weapon
under Section 9 of the Control of Weapons Act 1990.
He was at the time going
through many hardships his
defence claimed, as well as
being very intoxicated, attempting to self-medicate.
Magistrate Robinson commented on the security
guard being a man of general good nature and noted
that he had been seeking
psychological help and took
that into account when sentencing Mr Dardo.

By Kate Taylor
A new memorial recognising previously omitted
names of local WWI service
men and women will be
built at the front of Ballan
District Health & Care.
The We Remember: WWI
Memorial is being installed
into the BDHC front garden,
and will comprise commemorative pavers, landscaped
in a Canterbury Cross-style
formation, a flagpole, inground lighting, and soft
landscaping that will include Anzac roses.
Ballan District Health &

Care has been working in

collaboration with the Ballan
Shire Historical Society and
the RSL on the memorial.
This project grew out of
research undertaken by the
Ballan Shire Historical Society, which uncovered the
names of service men and
women who were either
born in, or lived in, the Ballan Shire at the time of their
enlistment, explained a
spokesperson for BDHC.
Most of these service people are not named on Ballans existing cenotaph.
Ballan District Health &
Care, the Ballan Historical

Society & the Ballan RSL

have come together collaboratively to redress this omission by providing a tranquil
memorial in a publicly accessible location.
The memorial was funded
by Ballan District Health &
Care, the Department of Premier & Cabinets Veterans
Fund (via the Ballan Shire
Historical Society), the Ballan Farmers Market, Moorabool Shire Council (Community Grant), the Ballan
RSL, Crossroads Trading,
and individual Community
Donors.

Perspective

with Paul Tatchell

Trains; simple things really

Lets face it, trains have been
around for a long time and
they havent changed much
in over a century and a half;
lots of wheels on lots of track
and no steering wheel.
Its a brilliant concept; they
carry lots of people, they
are relatively economical in
terms of productivity, and
they do the A to B thing better than any other form of
transport.
In terms of freight, there is
no other form of transport
with the potential to carry
large volumes of cargo from
A to B with relative efficiency; they can carry more
weight than trucks, and deal
with the elements much better than shipping.
As I said its a brilliant concept. In most Countries developed or otherwise its not
just a concept, its a reality.
Why, then, is Australia such
a basket case in terms of such
a simple tried and tested
form of transport? Well let
me tell you its got nothing to
do with the trains, its about
the people running them!
Lets face it, I wouldnt let
Jacinta Allen play with a

Hornby trainset, let alone

a public transport system.
Thomas the Tank Engine
has more credibility than
the Minister for Transport,
and at least the Fat Controller was a fictional character
running a fictional train network; with the Minister, we
started with a real person
and ended up with a fictional rail service.
We dont even have to be innovative; there are literally
thousands of rail networks
working efficiently all over
the World; if we are not
smart enough to build one,
just copy one!
Its not the first time this
country has had a problem
with running a rail network.
When we first got into this
train network caper, we built
different size tracks in all of
the States that needed different trains and carriages
to move people and freight
around the Country, and it
took nearly a hundred years
to sort it out.
Even Hornby have enough
engineering expertise to
know that if you want the
Ho scale train to go all the

way round the kitchen table, it helps if the track is

the same gauge, and more
importantly the train suits
the track! Maybe we should
get Hornby in to sort out our
public transport woes!
We have been re-vamping,
re-working, and re-designing the rail system between
Ballarat and Melbourne for
over a decade now, and it
was more reliable when it
had twice as many stops and
the trains ran on steam.
It is a one-track system, not
the Paris or London Underground, and the taxpayers
have paid a Kings ransom
to lay a high speed track for
a low speed train-set that
spends more time in the
workshop than out of it.
When Steve Bracks started
this Regional Fast Rail project 15 years ago on the Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong
lines, he claimed that the
tax-payers would only be
tipping in $80 million towards the project, saying the
Private Sector would be paying $470 million towards the
$550 million project.
It was soon revealed that

there was no private sector money coming into the

project; in fact there was no
private sector interest at all.
The project blew out to $750
million, and the claimed
speeds of the new service,
modest by World standards,
were never achieved.
Just to put train speeds in
Perspective, Fast trains all
over the world were already
doing 300 kph with no issues; we were aiming for
160 kph. Its probably worth
noting that a steam train was
clocked doing 160 on the Ballarat line in 1930!
Ballarat was the first line
to see V/Lines new VLocity
trains and its coming up 10
years since they were put
into service, using the term
service fairly loosely.
Track and signalling was
upgraded to allow VLocity trains to run at 160km/h
between Deer Park West
Junction and Ballarat. In addition, some deviations were
built to ease curves and potentially provide a considerably shorter route, but the
original route was retained
to provide a passing loop.
Whilst Jacinta Allen ducks

and weaves around the Ballarat Melbourne rail debacle like a punch drunk prizefighter in a bowl of jelly, the
Victorian tax-payers are
estimated to be paying $300
million per day to maintain
what was already a bad
regional transport service,
with no end in sight.
Put that into Perspective
and you have a project that
cost $750 million costing
$300 million per day; going
off the rails costs more than
staying on them. Whilst the
Bus Companies are more
excited than a Brahma Bull
in the Spring, the Regional
Transport System is about as
humorous as a crowd warmer at Tobin Brothers!
With the blame game in
full swing, Allen has spent
more time blaming people
for the problem than she has
fixing it. Its a sad indictment
on the state of Ministerial
politics, and indicative of the
lack of understanding of the
role of a Minister.
If you want the title, you
own the problem, thats the
grown up world of senior
management, and whilst
I accept that her predeces-

TOM

Environmental Opinion

sor Terry Mulder wasnt the

sharpest tool on the bench,
this was always a Labor
driven project as it went
from one fiscal disaster to
another.
Using the old saying a
well-worn path is not necessarily the right one, the cost
of propping up a broken system would fund and build
the much needed second
line to Ballarat, and probably
upgrade the stations to boot!
The State Government has
been spinning its way
through this debacle since
the Minister took the reins;
the only thing missing is the
truth. The public would be a
lot more sympathetic if they
are told how it is, not how
the Minister wishes it was.
Parliamentary
enquiries,
blaming previous governments, and putting the
whole regional rail issue
through the political spin cycle wont get country people
to work on time. It would be
refreshing to have a Government put up their hand and
own a problem as opposed
to politicising one!

with Tom Kingston

What we define as acceptable, good and useful

As I look out my window
while writing this opinion
piece Tasmania is still burning and the smoke persists.
Yet today we learn about
budget cuts to CSIRO that
have led to the decimation of
the agencys climate science.
Climate will all be gone,
basically one senior scientist recently said.
These job losses are just the
latest in a series of harmful
cuts to science. Just over two
years ago, the Climate Commission was abolished by
the Australian Government.
Thanks to financial support from some, the Climate
Council was created.
The loss of this scientific
expertise deals a body-blow
to Australias capacity to
understand climate change.
Our firefighters, our emergency services, and our community will be less prepared

for climate risks including

bushfires, heatwaves, and
extreme weather. Media
work is based on the worldclass science produced here
in Australia, especially by
experts like those losing
their jobs at CSIRO.
This leads me to reflect,
yet again, on the world we
live in. And what a strange
world it is we live in. Part of
this strangeness has to do
with what our governments
and our populations seem to
accept as good and useful.
Last year, as Penguin council was working on cleaning
up a waterway that was contaminated, because it flowed
through an old tip, the
work disturbed gorse. Soon
enough shoots of gorse started springing up all around
the works and next to the
North West Environment
Centre community garden

where Jenny and I volunteer.

The council acted quickly by
spraying these shoots.
First, a word on these quick
and easy sprays. The preferred option these days for
councils when spraying is
Roundup/glyphosate.
As
I have mentioned before,
Roundup has been claimed
by Monsanto to be safe and
harmless and has become
the worlds most widely and
pervasively used herbicide.
Apparently Monsanto is
currently facing a trial at
the International Monsanto
Tribunal in October of this
year in The Hague, Netherlands, home of numerous
International Conventions
on crimes against humanity.
The initiative for the Monsanto Tribunal comes from
a coalition representing all
sectors of civil society, and
includes in its steering com-

mittee Vandana Shiva of

Navdanya, former French
environment
minister,
Corinne Lepage, award winning journalist and author
of documentary The World
According to Monsanto
Marie-Monique
Robin,
molecular biologist and
toxicologist leading research
on toxicities of GMOs and
glyphosate herbicides GilesEric Sralini, Hans Herren
of the Millennium Institute,
and former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food
Olivier De Schutter.
Roundup, according to
these people, is not a safe
and harmless herbicide.
Therefore, these workers at
Penguin sprayed this, at best
dodgy and at worst lethal,
spray on this gorse. For this
work they received a wage.
In terms of wages, this work,
to the best of my knowl-

edge, would draw a wage

that is a fair bit lower than
say a financier in a bank or
other financial institution. In
terms of our modern world,
the financial rewards these
workers receive for this risky
work compares very poorly
with those working in areas
to do with finances. And this
reminds me of the saying attributed to the Cree nation of
the US, Only when the last
tree had died and the last
river has been poisoned and
the last fish has been caught
will we realise we cannot eat
money.
I have to say I started to remove this gorse by pick and
after an hour or so did clear a
patch. What if we employed
people to remove gorse in
this more environmentally
friendly way? I hear the
reader laughing here? This is
just not how we work these

days. Meanwhile in banks

and businesses throughout
the land we have workers
who are paid a good deal
more to generate money.
What if these people were
employed instead to work on
environmental programs?
So, all in all, we live in a
strange world where young
people are encouraged,
through financial incentives,
to do nothing towards the
health of the planet and everything for themselves. That
is just the way our world
works. Our world needs
Roundup/glyphosate

Ballan Bowling
By Scot Nicholson
Division 3 v Victoria
A heartbreaking three-shot defeat at the hands of Victoria
has left Ballan clinging onto their finals dreams by the skin
of their teeth.
Entering into the Round 16 match, Victoria was in last place
and carried a clear underdog status as they travelled to
Ballan. With swirling winds and a very challenging green to
combat, it was the visiting side that adapted to the conditions
faster and never looked back.
The 89-86 score has left Ballan in fourth place and only
three-points clear of Webbcona, who also suffered defeat on
the day.
Only two rinks were victorious for Ballan, with Neville
Smith gaining a slim four-shot advantage and Dave
OHanlon emerging as a 15-shot winner.
Brad Coffey faced a difficult start to the game, trailing 19-1
at one stage before fighting back to lose by 16-shots. Dave
Myers was also unsuccessful, losing by six-shots.
In a must-win situation, Ballan faces Sebastopol in the
penultimate game of the regular season on Saturday.

Division 9 v Victoria
Ballan has emerged as a true premiership contender after
defeating Victoria by 19-shots.
In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the season,
the top two clubs in Division Nine went in to battle for
supremacy.
Ballan was successful in all aspects of the game as they led
by a huge margin of 40-22 at afternoon tea, before locking
down the final score of 76-57.
John Ellery continued with his recent run of great form with
an 11-shot triumph.
Paul McNaughton battled with determination to win by
three-shots, while Charlie Farrugia returned to the side and
clinched a five-shot victory.
Ballan Manager Eddy Pitcher said the result shows his
players are striving for success.
It was fantastic to see everyone play well, not only for each
other, but for the whole club.
We have a winning culture at Ballan and I think we carry
that onto the green each weekend, Pitcher said.
In Round 17 Ballan plays host to Learmonth.

Lance harnesses honour

By Jessica Howard
Iconic harness reinsman
Lance Justice has been honoured as the latest Caduceus
Club Living Legend.

The Melton veteran was

the 24th inductee into the
award, which was presented
to him at a ceremony at the
MCG, after the A. G. Hunter
Harness Racing Cup barrier
draw.
Its a great award. Its a fantastic award. To be honoured
by your peers is the biggest
accolade you can get, he
said.

Commencing his career in

South Australia at the age of
just 14, Justice drove his first
winner at 22-years-old. His
earlier years also included
seven wins in one meet
and a super pacer in Whirley Dream. Now a resident
of Victoria, Justice is a five
times leading metropolitan
trainer.
Landing what was thought
to be the horse of a lifetime,
Justice guided horse Sokyola to almost $1.9 million in
stakes. Sokyolas 161 starts
yielded 78 wins, including
being first past the post in
the 2003 and 2004 Miracle
Miles, and the 2004 Sew-

Upon collecting his legendary award, Justice was

includes training 19 and

Bacchus Marshs all-female footy team is back in training

After making the finals in 2015, the side is hoping to go all
the way this year and coach Rod Bertram says the team has

With most of last years team returning we also welcome
the new inclusions to the team for 2016 and look forward
to a successful year led by last years coach Jack Hanneysee
and assistant coaches
Haley

and
Krista Woodroffe (from

With
a

Sporting Talent
The most technically advanced off-road capable SUV ever produced by Mitsubishi Motors
has arrived, and is setting new benchmarks, even against some more expensive competition.

he New Pajero Sport 4x4 SUV Mitsubishis

ultimate family sports car, combines the
spaciousness and versatility of a full-size
SUV, genuine four-wheel drive ability, advanced
powertrain technology and class-leading safety
in a stylish, nimble and superbly comfortable
package.
Available in three model levels, GLX, GLS and
Exceed, Pajero Sport is the ideal sports SUV for
active families, grey nomads and four-wheel drive
enthusiasts.
Its has driveway appeal and is turning heads with
the companys new Dynamic Shield styling theme,
giving it a distinctive appearance from every
angle.
Mitsubishis new off-road terrain control and
Super Select II all-wheel drive systems are
standard across the Pajero Sport range. It boasts
an unparalleled list of standard safety features
including a rear view camera, reversing sensors,
seven SRS airbags, Emergency Stop Signal (ESS),
Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer
Stability Assist systems.
The range-topping Pajero Sport Exceed adds to
this impressive list of standard safety features
with the latest in advanced safety systems,
with multi around monitor, blind spot warning,
forward collision mitigation and Ultrasonic
Misacceleration Mitigation System among its
standard equipment.
Pajero Sport introduces a number of Mitsubishi
technology firsts, including a new 8-speed
automatic transmission, which when combined
with a new 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine enables
official fuel consumption of 8.0-litres/100km*.
Pajero Sports EURO 5 compliant diesel

engine produces maximum torque of 430Nm

at 2500rpm, while peak power is 133kW at
3500rpm. It uses an all-aluminium cylinder block
construction and other lightweight materials
to achieve greater efficiency, quietness and
refinement.
The new powertrain combination gives Pajero
Sport a handy 3.1 tonne braked capacity that
when mated with the 8 speed box results in
smooth barely detectable gear changes and
noise and exceptional economy that clearly
distinguishes it from other off-road SUVs.
Visually the vehicle could be described as sleek
and sporty and the interior carries this theme
but adds to it a degree of unparalleled seating
and driving comfort. The interiors sporty feel
is enhanced by the addition of an electric park
brake another Mitsubishi first and the centre
console with dynamically styled silver-finish
ornamentation that wraps around the front
passengers.

allows users to connect to apps or other features

of their phone through the touchscreen or via
voice control.
Adding to Pajero Sports comfort and convenience
is keyless entry with push button start across the
range, along with upgraded ETACS Electronic
Time and Control System. ETACS has a number of
fully customisable functions including welcome
light, coming home light and headlight auto off.
The dusk sensing headlamps (on GLX and Exceed)
can also be adjusted to increase or decrease the
sensitivity of operation.

Pajero Sport runs rings around the opposition not

only in features and outstanding value but it also
wins in the visual category with its stunning looks.
Pajero Sport is far from a one dimensional
offering and is as comfortable at home with the
active families, empty nesters, and the serious
4-wheel drivers who demand a comfortable,
reliable and clever 4x4 SUV that is equally
capable in Australian cities as it is off the beaten
track.
Its recent global release has seen Pajero Sport
a runaway success story in Mitsubishi with
orders around the world almost 400% of initial
estimates. Pajero Sport is the clear winner and
has raised the bar for SUVs in Australia.

Newly designed plush sculpted seats complete

with extra padding enhance the feeling comfort
for front and rear passengers, especially on
longer adventures and add to its luxurious
ambience.

2016 Pajero Sport Model Range

Pajero Sport is also very roomy with a 673 litre

rear cargo volume (floor to top of rear seat back),
with increased head and legroom compared to its
Challenger predecessor. With the rear seat folded,
a massive 1,624 litre cargo volume is available
(floor to roof).

Pajero Sport has been launched with a super

sharp driveaway price from the get go, from
$46,990 for the GLX model through to $54,990
drive away for the flagship Pajero Sport Exceed
which adds to the enviable list of standard
specifications with the latest safety and luxury
features. Multi around monitor, blind spot
warning, forward collision mitigation and
Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System
headline a comprehensive passive and active
safety package.

All models feature the latest smartphone

connectivity technology Smartphone Link
Display Audio (SDA) system for both Android
AutoTM*1 and Apple CarPlay*2. The system

The top-of-the-line Exceed also comes equipped

with extra creature comforts, including heated
front seats with power adjustment, rear DVD
entertainment system and 8-speaker audio.

Three variants are available; GLX, GLS and

Exceed, with 8-speed automatic standard across
the range.

Pajero Sport comes standard with Mitsubishis

legendary aersales support of a 5 year warranty,
5 year roadside assistance and 4 year or 60,000
capped price servicing. With intervals every
15,000km or 12 months you have less time off
the road and more time to explore.
