Assessment Policy and Procedures

The Science Department will operate the following policies in 2016.
Each student will be issued with a Course Outline at the start of the year detailing:

General course overview

The achievement standards in the course, their credit value and the assessment method
An assessment statement detailing the dates and types of assessment

The following policies will be applied:

Authenticity
Assessment work completed must be the students own work. Students and caregivers will be
expected to sign authenticity declarations and, where appropriate submit working drafts. Where
evidence indicates work presented is not a students own work the school policy will be followed.
Appeals
Appeals for grades awarded may be made but must occur within 5 school days of the return of
assessed work. Where a grade is appealed, school policy will be followed.
Late work
Late work will not be accepted for marking unless exceptional circumstances exist and an
extension has been granted by the TIC/HOD before the due date.
Absent from assessment:
Further assessment opportunities will be available to those students who are absent due to
extenuating circumstances (illness, bereavement, school trip or accident). Students must apply to
have another opportunity for assessment and these applications must be supported by written
proof (medical certificate for illness, ie you must visit a doctor).
Resits:
A reassessment may be offered for non-practical assessments to students. This will involve a new
assessment task and may involve a significant amount of new learning which is the responsibility
of the student. No reassessments will be offered for practical assessments.
Verification of Grades
Students are required to verify the sighting and acceptance of the grade awarded by signing the
examination paper.
Retention of Student Work
The department will retain student assessment material until it is no longer required for moderation
purposes.
