Firstly,IsoughttounderstandwhatinformationtheAmericanpublicalreadyheld.SoI
conductedinterviewswithrandomstudentsandteachersatMcKinleySeniorHigh
School.TheyquestionsIaskedpertainedto,howmuchdoyouknow?whatdoyouknow?
areyoufamiliarwithPalestineandgeneralpolitics?Whileconductingmyresearch,I
triedmybesttocreatequestionsthatdidnotleadaparticularanswer,orrefrainfrom
subjectivityandgeneralinterference.ButIfoundthatmanyparticipants,knowingthatI
wasPalestinian,feltthattheymustanswerinacertainway.Ididnotclaimmyidentityat
anytimeoftheinterview,butIhavealwaysmadeitcleartotheworldinthepast.Imay

scientificevolutionandarchitecturalinnovationswemustlearnfromothers
abroad.Thiscanbepossiblethroughgloballyinformedinstructors,meaning
teachersthathaveseenandexperiencedthingsbeyondtheUnitedStates.This
globaleducationmayalsobeacquiredthroughcarefullywrittenandselected
textbooks.Thesetextbooksshouldbededicatedtoinformingforeigninfluence
andcontributionstosocieties.Forthiscanbeusedtofurtheraidtheinstructors
teachingsandexperiences.Thisisdescribedtobebestforastudentwhohas
nevertravelled,somethingIhaveunderstoodtobe,aguide.Thisbookwillneed
tobewrittenbypeopleoriginsvaryingfromthatofAmericans,tobetterprovide
thestudentswithdiversityandadifferingperspective.Ifeelasthoughatextbook
maybetoorigidwhentryingtogainsuchafragileandflexibleabstract,andthat
itmaybedifficulttoexpresssomanydistinctiveunderstanding.Readingthese
thingsmaytakethoroughresearch,andIfeelthatthroughatextbook,thatwillnot
bepossible.Travelinthisarticleisalsodescribedasanimportanttooltowards
gainingamoredevelopedinternationalperspective.AndIfeelasthoughthisis
themostefficientandeffectivemethod.Forwhatbetterwaytounderstanda
contentthenthroughexperience.Makingthistripforoneselfmakesthewhole
experiencepersonal,thereforerelevant.Ifoundthatthisarticlewascompatible
withmyresearchduetothefactthatthroughmyfindingIhavediscoveredthe
lackofdimensioninourgeneraleducationsystems,thereforeresultinginalack

WhenconductingtheinterviewIaskedthequestion, Doyouconsideryourselfa
politicallyawareoractiveperson?Ifso,how?IwasfacedwiththeanswerIfeared
most.Somestudentsclaimedthatitskindofaheadacheandthattheyweremerely
teenagersthatsoughttobeirresponsibleThisleadmetobelievethatteenagersthink
thatbecausetheyareteenagers,theyhavenoneedtoengageandunderstand
politics.Oureducationalsystemhasdividedlearnersaccordingtotheirage,whichhas
restrictedthematerialgivenandevenindividualprogression.Oursystemhaslead
childrenbelievethatcertainthingsareacquiredthroughage,orareappropriatefora
certainagegroup.Therefore,manystudentsfeelasthoughpoliticsisasubjectsavedfor
thisofolderage.
SomethingelseIdiscoveredwassometeenagersfeltthatteenagersarenotencouragedto
bepolitical,anddonotgetenoughcredit.ThroughmystudyIdiscoveredthatstudents
feelthatpoliticsisorganizedinamannerinwhichremainsirrelevanttoteenslives.
Thestudentsexpressedthatteenagerswerenottakenseriouslyinpolitics,andthatthey
werenotacknowledgedfortheirpoliticalefforts.Iunderstandthistobeanyattemptat
politicalreform,orgeneralsupport.Thethingsthatteenagersmostlyengageinincluding
televisioninwhichconsistofchannelssuchasMTVandNickelodeonorDisney,of
socialmediaaccounts,consistingofInstagram,tumblr,snapchat,twitter,andFacebook
havenodirectrelationtopolitics.Somepoliticalpages,orshowsmayair,butthe

intentionofthesesourcedistoentertain.Teenagersparticipateinactivitieslikeshopping,
orplayingsports,socializing,thingssocialmediahasportrayedasanorm.Whatwasthe
informedteenageronaTVshowalwayslabelledas?Anerd.Andthathasbecomea
realityforouryouth.
Inmyresearchonlyoneparticipantclaimedthattheconflictdeservedmoremedia
coverage.Thispersonsaidtheydidnotknowanythingduetothefactthatitwasnot
shownenoughonthenews,soIwasleadtounderstandthatmanypeopledonot
understandthatthePalestinian/Israeliconflictenduresvariouscomplicationsdaily,
andthatit,indeed,lackedmediacoverage.Whileinterviewing,anotherparticipant
claimedthatwhentherewascoverage,thatitwasalwaysmanipulated.Whetheritwas
theshapingofwords,orabiasportrayalofapicture.Also,deathsoccurinthe
Palestine/Israelregiondailyinhighnumbers,andmanystudentswereunawarethatthis
wasanongoing,dailystruggle.

ReflectonProgress.Whatsignificantthingshaveyoulearnedthroughthisprocessthus
far?Whathasbeenmostsurprising,rewarding,ordifficultaboutthisprocess?Howhave
youinvolvedyourmentor?
Thewholeprocesshasbeenrewarding.OnceIdleftPalestineIsworetomyfriendsat
schoolandmyselfthatIwouldspreadthewordofPalestineandbringawarenesstothe
conflict.Andthroughthisproject,IfeelIamdoingjustthat.ThisissomethingthatIcare
deeplyfor,sodatacollectionwassomethingIenjoyed.Actuallyspeakingtothe
individualsoftheAmericanpublicIrefertosoofteninmyprojectwasinteresting.I
putfacestomyprojectandthatmakesitsomuchmorevalidandpowerful.AproblemI
facedwasthefactthatalotofthestudentsIinterviewedknewmeandthestrongbeliefsI
holdtowardsthistopic,soIfeltthatsomeansweredinawaytheyfeltwouldpleaseme.
Myprojectisnotredistrictedtoschoolonly,soIknownowthatitisbesttointerview
peopleoutoftheschoolaswell.Mymentorapprovedmyquestionsandallowedmeto
takestudentsfromherclassesformyinterviews.Also,shehasbeentalkingalotabout
politicsandPalestinelately,accordingtoherstudents.

Now,IknowIwillneedtogetoutandcollectdataoutsideoftheschool.SoIplanon
interviewingrandompeople.Ialsoplanonaskingvariousteachersatschool,iftheywill
allowmetoconductaworkshopduringtheirclasses.ThiswillbeatimewhenIask

aboutwhatthestudentsgenerallyknow,brieflyinformthem,andanswerquestionsthey
mayhave.Thiswillbethebringawarenesssegmentofmyproject.Ihavealready
conductedthreeworkshops,andhopetocontinue.
