This assessment for Concepts of Print was created by Lauren Caswell, M.Ed. This assessment should be
accompanied by an age appropriate book as the student will need a book to complete the assessment. It
measures if the student can identify different parts of a book such as the front, back, spine and title
page; the difference between letters and words; difference between words and sentences; if the
students understands the purpose of a space between words and punctuation; and understanding that
text is read from top to bottom, and left to right. This assessment can be informal measuring
performance more so than data, but can also be formal if you, as the teacher, decides to compare the
average of your students, or how an individual student compares to a class of their peers (same age
group) or to identify and compare strength and weaknesses. It is appropriate for Kindergartners and
should be taken at least 3 times throughout the year (Beginning, mid, and end of the year). Components
of the examine that have been mastered the very first time taking it, can be reviewed the next time but
should not be calculated in the overall score for the second time. Skills that were not mastered during
the first assessment, should be worked on and tested again for understanding. It can be considered a
summative assessment. At the end of year, students should exhibit mastery in all of the concepts of
print. This assessment should be conducted on an individual basis and students should be given at
least10 minutes or less to complete.
