Ellison, Nicole. "DR3: Social Media and Identity." Future Identities: Changing Identities in the
UK the next 10 Years (2013): 2-17. Government Office for Science. Web. 13 Feb. 2016.
In the journal DR3: Social Media and Identity by Nicole Ellison, it discusses how
social media affects an individuals behavior. Ellison talks about how sites for social
media, chat rooms, etc., can be a way for a person to mask their true selves behind an
invisible wall on the internet. Anybody is allowed to be anybody basically through
falsified information online and nobody will notice any difference. This article is useful
because it explains the affects that the internet can have on an individual and explains
how anyone can falsify information. It is also goes into the consequences that follow
social interactions conducted online. The downside of this journal is that it is a bit wordy
and scientific, so it can be slightly confusing for reading.
Krotoski, Aleks. "Online Identity: Is Authenticity or Anonymity More Important?" The
Guardian. Guardian News and Media, 19 Apr. 2012. Web. 13 Feb. 2016.
In the article Online Identity: is authenticity or anonymity more important? by Aleks
Krotoski, Krotoski talks about how anonymity online can really differentiate from
authenticity online. The author uses the example of Mark Zuckerburgs invention of
Facebook. The author also goes into examples of how people in South Korea and China
use false identities online, but their actions online are traceable. Krotoski also states how
with anonymity, people have a sense of control. This article is useful because it states
how anonymity is less prioritized than authenticity online nowadays; however, this article
is not entirely useful since it does not explain how anonymity or authenticity affects its
user.
Nauert, Rick, Ph.D. "Online Personality Influences Real-Life Identity." Psych Central News.
Psych Central. Web. 13 Feb. 2016.
The article Online Personality Influences Real-Life Identity by Rick Nauert PhD, talks
about the cons from social media such as cyberbullying as well as the affects the internet
has by changing the behavior and talking habits of an internet user. Nauert uses testimony
from professors at universities throughout the US to help aid his argument on how social
media affects its user mentally in a psychological way. This article is useful from the last
part of the article when it mentions how behavior, and talking habits, are affected through
using technology daily and acquiring a certain form of text jargon. It is not useful
however due to the fact that cyberbullying is not so much an identity changer from social
media, just a different form of bullying.
