How We Test Today

Today structures are tested visually and with primarily destructive
testing methods including boring into concrete in suspect areas to
visually asses potential weak spots. Drilling into post tension cables
that hold up bridges and roadways to assess potential deterioration
and corrosion, further exposing the cables to air and moisture that
can further deteriorate the structure.
Visually looking for cracks in concrete (Too late, the damage is done)
Hitting the concrete with a hammer to see where the concrete may
be loose and fall off. (Archaic)

Non Destructive Testing

Non-destructive testing(NDT) is a wide group of
analysis techniques used in science and industry to
evaluate the properties of a material, component or
system without causing damage. Wikipedia.
Most NDT testing done today is crude involving giant
heavy machinery, magnets and radar units, often too
heavy or dangerous to be commercially viable until
now.
