Asaseniorproject,IwillbeteachingaCPRandAEDuseclasswithan
AmericanHeartAssociationinstructor,thuseveryonewhoattendswillbecertifiedforCPR.The
classwillbeheldattheconferenceroomoftheSimiValleyPublicLibrary,itwillcost$45per
student.Outofthe$45collected,$25willgodirectlytowardsmaterialsthatthestudentsneed(to
becomecertified,everyonemustbeinpossessionoftheCPRbookandthe$25willpayforthat).
Theremaining$20willbedonatedtoBaanGerda,acharityinThailandthatprovidesmedical
aid,education,andahometoorphanedchildreninfectedoraffectedbyHIV/AIDS.Attheevent,
Iplanonfurthereducatingeveryoneoftheissueofchildrenorphanedbysuchadiseaseby
presentingabriefslideshow.
ThereasonIchosetodothisprojectisbecauseitsmypersonalpassion.Iam
interestedinmethodsofCPR,andIwantedmyprojecttobeahumanitarianone.SinceIam
especiallysympatheticabouttheHIV/AIDSdisease,Iwantedmyprojecttoalsobenefitthose
affectedinsomeway.AfterIbecameresoluteaboutteachingaCPRclassaspartofmyproject,I
beganresearchingmultiplecharitiesIcoulddonateto.Iconsideredmanylargecharityor
organizations,suchasUNICEF.IstumbleduponBaanGerda,asmallcharityinThailand.I
chosethemorelocalcharitybecauseIknewmymoneywouldgotowardsthiscause.Ivebeen
incontactwiththemandtheyarefrequentlyupdatingmeandprovidingmoreinformationabout
thechildrenandthehome.Itsalsobeneficialforme,aswhenIcontactthem,Igettousemy
Thailanguage.
SinceIworkinChildCareforourlocalYMCA,Iwasrequiredtobecome
certifiedinFirstAidandCPR/AED.Aftertakingmycourse,Ibecameinterestedinthemethods
ofCPR.IrealizedhowcrucialitisthateveryoneknewhowtodeliverCPR,intimesofneeds.

Thus,Iwantedtoeducatethelocalsofourtown.Icontactedmyinstructorandheagreedtohelp
mewithmyproject.Iaskedmyinstructorandmentor,StephenHoffman,whoisacertified
AmericanHeartAssociationinstructorifhewouldbewillingtohelpmewithmyproject.I
explainedthedynamicsoftheseniorprojectatSantaSusanaHighSchool,theamountofhours
thatwasrequired,howIdneedamentor,etc.Igavehimthelinktoourschoolwebsite,he
exploredtheSeniorProjectrequirementsandwasmorethanhappytohelpmewithmyproject.
Thus,webegandiscussingthroughemail,whatexactlyourprojectwillbe.
ThelearningstretchliesinthatImtakingsomethingIhavelearned,CPR,and
teachingittoothers,thusImustlearnhowtobecomeateacherinsteadofthestudent.Usingthe
moneytodonatetoacharityIampassionateofisnotonlyhumanebutpersonallysatisfying.
InordertoteachaCPRclass,ImustresearchthebasicsofCPR,provideinformationabout
HIV/AIDS,adoptteachingstylesthatismostefficientforsuchaclass,andappealforpeopleto
come.
Cardiopulmonaryresuscitation,commonlyknownasCPR,isalifesaving
technique.Cardiopulmonaryresuscitationisusedinemergencysituations,incaseofsomeone
whohasbeendrownedorhashadaheartattack.AsdescribedbytheMayoClinicStaff,
cardiopulmonaryresuscitationisdesignedthe
keepoxygenatedbloodflowingtothebrainand
othervitalorgansuntilmoredefinitivemedicaltreatmentcanrestoreanormalheartrhythm.
Thus,thismethodservestoonlysavetemporarily.Inanemergencysituation,evenifCPRhas
beenperformedandthevictimisbreathing,paramedicsstillneedstobecalled.
Intheirarticleregarding
cardiopulmonaryresuscitationuse,theMayoClinicstaff
thoroughlydescribedhowevery,eventhoseuntrained,areabletopracticeCPR.Forthosewho

hasneverbeentrained,itisbesttodeliveronehundredchestcompressionsforeveryminute,
withoutanyinterruptions,untilparamedicsarrive.Theysuggestthatifonehasbeentrainedand
arecertifiedinCPRandisalsoactuallyconfidentintheircapabilityofdeliveringCPR,theymay
skipthecheckingairwaystepandgostraighttogivingchestcompressions(30chest
compressionsand2breathstothebeatofBeeGees
StayingAlive
).However,ifoneistrained
buthaventbeeninpractice,theMayoClinicStaffadvisesthatonedeliversthe100chest
compressionsperminute.

GiventhatIamalreadycertifiedinCPR/AEDandFirstAID,Im
awareofthesebasicsprocedures.However,theprocedurethatIknowonlypertainedtomeatthe
time,whichwassomeonewhohadrecentlytakenthecourseandwasmorethanreadytoperform
CPRincaseofanemergency.WhenIwastrained,IwastaughtalsohowtoutilizeanAED
machineandthisissomethingIwillalsoteachmyclassaspartofmyphysicalproject.Itis
importantformetofurtherresearchtonotonlyrefreshmymemory,butalsotoensurethatIam
deliveringaccurateinformationformystudents.
TheAmericanHeartAssociationhasreleasedanonlinearticleexplainingwhat
AEDis.Accordingtothesource,AEDstandsforAutomatedExternalDefibrillator.These
machinesarelightweightandcandeliveranelectricshockthroughthechesttotheheart.Cardiac
arrestsiscausedbythefibrillationoftheventricles,thustheheartmustbedefibrillatedto
functionagain.AutomatedExternalDefibrillatorsareportableandeasytouse.Assoonasitis
pluggedintoanoutletorenergysource,thebuiltincomputerdiagnosesthecardiacarrhythmias
ofthepersonsuffering.Itthenbeginstoinstructusers,tellingthemexactlywheretoplacethe
padsandwhentopressthebuttonfortheelectricshocktosurgethrough.Itisimportantand
usefulbecauseofitssimplicityandstepbystepinstructions,allowingcommonpeople,who

arentcertifiedasdoctorsornurses,touseittosavelives.Still,individualsmustbetrainedto
useanAutomatedExternalDefibrillatorinordertoproperlyexecuteitintimesofneeds.

However,sinceIwillbeteachingcardiopulmonaryresuscitationandAutomated

ExternalDefibrillatorusethistimeinsteadoflearning,Iwillneedtoresearchmoreonteaching
stylesIwouldadoptforthisspecifictypeofcourseandhowIwillbeabletoprovokemore
peopletoattendmyevent.
ThearticlePreparingfortheFirstClasssuggeststhatteachersbegintheclass
withabanginordertogettheclassengaged.Awaytodothisistogetpersonal,talkingtothe
studentsasiftheywereclosepeersandnotdegradethemtosomethinginferior.Multiplearticles
suggestsbuildingrelationshipswithstudents.However,Iamunsureofwhetherornotthatis
somethingbeneficialandwillimprovethesuccessesofmystudents.Especiallysincemyclass
willbeonlytwohourslong,ImambivalentabouthowpersonalofarelationshipIwouldwishto
developwithmystudents.Thus,Iwillkeepbeingentertainingandinformative,andregardlessI
willcontinuetotreatmystudentswiththeutmostrespect.
Thesamearticleadvisesteacherstodiveintomaterialsrightaway.Itisalso
importantthatteachersbegintheirclassbyexplainingtheirpersonalgoalsandalsodescribethe
expectationsoftheclass.Personallyforme,thegoalofmyclassisessentiallytoraisemore
awarenessandfostermoreunderstandingforthoseaffectedorinfectedbyHIV/AIDSand
ultimatelyraisingfundstohelpchildrenofthecharityinThailandthatIvecontacted.Iam
planningoncreatingaslideshowforregardingallthebasicinformationIwouldliketoaddress
tomyclass.However,Istillwouldhavetokeepitverybriefinordertoproceedwiththeactual
contentofCPR/AEDtraining.

Ialsofoundanarticle,CreatingaSyllabus,thatfocusesonexactlywhatthe
titleentailsmakingasyllabusformyclass!However,Idontintendonmakingaformal
syllabus,giventhatitsatwohourcoursecomparedtocollegeclassesthataremuchlonger.
However,Ifoundtheinformationtheauthorintendedtobeonthesyllabusimportantaswell.I
didntponderthismuch,butrealizedthat$25ofthetotalcostsformyCPRclassisgoing
towardsthereadingresourcesforthestudents.IhaveacopyoftheCPR/AEDandFirstAidbook
myself,soIwoulddefinitelydiscusshowexactlytousethebookandshowhowitsbrokenup
intosectionssothatwhenitcomestotimeofneeds,theholderofthebookwillbeabletofind
theinformationtheywanteasilyandtreatthosewhohavebeenharmedefficiently.Asfaras
personalexperiencegoesforthisbook,wekeeptwocopiesatmyworkinChildWatchandIuse
italmosteverytimeachildisinjured.Thisisbecausethemethodshavechangedsignificantly
overtheyearsthatyoumustconstantlyupdateyourself.Forexample,achildIhadbeen
watchingoverhadanosebleed.ImadesurethatwhatIwassupposedtodoistolethimjustsit
andensurethattheheadisnttiltedbacksothebloodwouldntgobackdownthethroatbyusing
thehandoutatwork.Before,theAmericanHeartAssociationhadinstructedtokeepthehead
tiltedbutnowithaschanged.AlsoIhadtokeepanicepackonthenoseofthechild.
Lastly,thevideoonteachingthatIhadviewedcalledTeachingTipsforNew
TeachersbyPhilBeadle,anEnglishteacherandeducationconsultant,stressesthatasateacher,
Ishouldbeassigningseatstomystudents.Myinstructorpersonallyhadsortedtheseatsforthe8
ofhisstudentsthedayIwenttogetcertified.Athispoint,hewasincontrolandassigned
partnersaswell.IthoughtthiswasbeneficialbecausewhenIarrived,allmymaterialshadbeen
setformealreadyIwasmorefocused.InsteadofworryingaboutwhatstrangefacesIwould

havetositnexttoorwhatpeopleIwouldbeforcedtosocializewith,Iwastrulyfocusedonthe
curriculum.ThisisdefinitelyastyleIwouldadoptformyownclasswhenIamteaching.
IhavestudiedandresearchedchildrenonchildrenorphanedbyHIV/AIDS
before,similartothoseinthecharityinThailand.IdidtheresearchtocompeteinaModel
UnitedNationsconferenceandthetopicwaschildrenorphanedbydiseases.Thiswasmyfirst
timebeingexposedtotheissueandpropelledmetotaketheinitiativetohelp,eveninthe
smallestwayIcan.Mymaingoalistocreatetransparencyontheissueanderadicatethestigma
revolvingaroundthedisease.Iwanttomakesurethattheseverityoftheissueisaddressed.
IretrievedinformationdirectlyfromtheUnitedNations,namelytheirarticle
calledChildrenAffectedbyAids.TheUnitedNationsdefinesanorphanasachildwhohas
lostoneorbothparents.DiseasessuchasEbola,AIDS,malaria,andtuberculosisaccountsfor
themajorityoforphanedchildren.Parentswhopassedawayduetothesediseasesleftbehind
orphanedchildren.Theseorphanswilleitherlivewithrelativesorareshunnedcompletelyby
societyduetothecommunitysfearofbecominginfectedbyadiseasethattheorphanpotentially
caughtfromtheirparent.Thesechildrenmuststrugglealonetoprovideforboththeirphysical
andemotionalneedsinordertosurvive.

AlthoughthenumberoforphanshasdecreasedovertheyearsinAsianandLatin

Americancountries,itissteadilyincreasinginAfricancountries.DiseasessuchasEbola,
HIV/AIDS,malaria,andtuberculosishasreachedeverywhereallovertheworld,buttheseverity
ofthesediseasesismostevidentinAfricancountries.Twothirdsoftheworldspopulation
livingwithHIVoccupythecontinentofAfrica.ThesubSaharanportionofAfricaitselfishome
to48millionorphans,12millionofwhichwereorphanedasaresultofAIDS.Theissueof

orphanedchildrenismostprevalentinAfrica,specificallythenationsthathavebeenexposedto
epidemicoutbreakssuchasSierraLeone,Liberia,andGuinea.
Thisissuecanleadtoanincreaseoftheworldpopulationinpoverty,makingthe
growthoftheinternationaleconomystagnant.Therewouldbeahighermortalityrateamong
youngchildren,affectingtheentiregrowinggeneration.Theorphansthatdosurviveandgrow
intoadulthoodwilllivewithtrauma,sufferfromanxietyanddepression,bedeprivedofan
education,andbeatagreaterriskofHIVandotherinfections.Inaddition,iftheorphansdonot
receivethepriorityattentionthattheydeserve,thereisalikelihoodthattheentireworldmaybe
affectedifthediseaseisnotcontained.
Thisdoesnotconcernonlyorphans,butspecificallygirlsraisedinasocietythat
forcesthemintochildmarriage.Thelackofeducationwomenreceivesaffectsthehealthoftheir
entirefamily.YounggirlswhoareforcedtomarryoftenarenotinformedofHIVpreventions
andarealreadypressuredtoconceiveearlyinordertoupholdtheirfamilyssocialstanding.
Thus,morechildrenarebornattheriskofbeingexposedtoHIVtoyoungparentswhoarenot
yetfittoraiseastablefamily.Inpolygamousunions,girlsaremarriedoffatanevenyounger
age.Forexample,youngladiesinEthiopiawillbemarriedintoapolygamousunionbeforethe
ageof15.Inmostpolygamousrelationships,itismorecommonthatthepartnersarenotwell
educated,thusallindividualsoftherelationshipliveinthedangerofbeinginfectedbyHIV.
Sincenoformaleducationisprovided,thesewomenoftenresorttousingfolkloricmethodsof
contraceptives.InBurkinaFaso,77%ofwomenusefolkloricmethodsofcontraceptivesand
53%ofwomenwhodonotknowhowtoprotectthemselvesareengagedinapolygamous
relationship.

IwillapplydirectlywhatIlearnedtoteachmyclasswiththeinformation
regardingchildrenaffectedbyHIV/AIDSIgatheredfrommysourcesaslistedabove.Iwillmost
likelycreateapresentationtoeducatethoseonHIV/AIDSwiththedataIdescribed.After
reviewingmoreonCPR,Iwillthenphysicallydeliverthelessonsoftomyclass.Iwillalsobe
adoptingtheteachingstyles,suchascreatingaseatingchartbeforehandandestablishinga
personathatisinformativeaswellasentertainingsomystudentswillbeengaged.Ive
researchedintoforminganagenda,developingarelationshipwithmystudents,andensuringthat
everyonesucceedsintheircourse.Intotal,IhaveresearchedextensivelyonCPR,various
methodsofteaching,andinformationonthediseaseofHIV/AIDS.
