Course Outline 2015-2016


Grade 9 Physical Education Outcomes:
Students will be expected to:
ACTIVE FOR LIFE (40%)
analyze and evaluate SMART goals for their health-related
physical fitness, and evaluate the behaviours related to a peers
SMART goals through a case-study approach
analyze and evaluate the impact of their participation in physical
activities at moderate to vigorous intensities on the global
community
design a personal plan of action to maintain or improve physical
activity participation in and away from school
evaluate ways to manage risk while being physically active in
various settings
SKILL AND MOVEMENT CONCEPTS (40%)
demonstrate competency in skill combinations and movement
concepts within dance, educational gymnastics, games, and
active pursuits
demonstrate competency in locomotor skills, skill combinations,
and movement concepts while applying various strategies
demonstrate understanding of how skills, skill combinations, and
movement concepts experienced during physical education are
transferred to physical activities that interest them away from
school
evaluate decision-making skills while applying skills, skill
combinations, and movement concepts during different types of
physical activities as adaptations are placed on settings, space,
time, rules, and tasks
LIFE SKILLS (20%)
apply an understanding of compassion toward others and the
environment, and analyze how compassion can impact school
climate and their community
evaluate personal and social responsibility that values diversity
and analyze how personal and social responsibility relates to
social justice
evaluate their collaboration skills, behaviours that promote
fairness, and their impact on self and others

Students will receive a numerical grade at the end of each term. At the
end of the year, each of the three terms will be valued at one third and
will comprise the final mark for this course.

Assessment is the process of gathering, from a variety of sources, information that


accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the learning outcomes in a course.
1. Formative assessment is to show growth over time, determine student needs, plan
next steps in instruction, and provide students descriptive feedback.
2. Summative assessment is to determine the extent to which learning has occurred
for students.
Evaluation is the process of analyzing, reflecting upon and summarizing assessment
information and making judgement and/or decisions based on information gathered.
Methods of Assessment designed to meet the outcomes will/may involve, but will not be
limited to, the following:

Observation
Conferencing
Presentations and demonstrations (group & individual)
In-class & Take-home Assignments
Journal and log writing
Quizzes, Tests, Exam
Classroom, Gymnasium and Outdoor activities
Self/Peer Evaluations
Check lists
Descriptive feedback

Please note that students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate an


understanding of an outcome.

Physical Education Classroom Guidelines


Student Expectations:

RESPECT: Self, Others & Equipment

Participate to the best of their abilities during physical education


class, unless a legitimate excuse is provided by a doctor or a
parent/guardian explaining what the student can and cannot do

Be prepared for ALL physical education classes with the


appropriate attire
Clean athletic sneakers with a solid back and tied tight
T-shirt, athletic tank top (at least 2 finger width straps),
long sleeve T-shirts, sweat suits, track pants, shorts etc
(Ideally no belts, buckles or zippers)

Jewellery is not recommended to be worn during class as it may


cause injury to that student or other students, or it may possibly
get broken or lost.

ELECTRONICS are only permitted with the teachers permission


for educational purposes. Students are welcome to use a
lock box provided by staff but neither MRHS nor staff is
responsible for lost or stolen items.

No gum chewing

Hats are not permitted within the gymnasium during instructional


time

Follow and abide by the Provincial School Code of Conduct
