Creative Writing 11 Course Outline

Rationale:
Creative Writing is an artistic exploration of writing, focusing on developing
each writers personal voice. Through innovative activities students will
challenge themselves to expand their views on writing.
Objectives:
This class will give students the opportunity to expand their writing
experiences beyond that of a regular classroom setting. More time will be
given to personal expression, and the exploration of a variety of writing
techniques. Working with their peers, students will have the opportunity to
not only share their work, but also gain valuable feedback. The main course
objective is to allow students to be creative in a positive and supportive
setting.

Curriculum:
Creative Non-Fiction Writing- In this unit students will review the writing
process, revisions and peer editing. Other topics of study will include: voice,
point of view, style, humorous writing, and blending actual experiences with
literary elements. As a class we will be experimenting with writing memoirs,
personal essays, screenplays and humour.
Poetry as a Writing Style We will be reading a wide array of poetic
expressions and formats. Students will be given the opportunity to both write
their own poetry, compare and contrast prose, and experiment with rhythm
and rhyme.
Fiction as a Form of Creative Writing The major focus of the course, in
this unit students will explore character and characterization from many
perspectives. In addition we will be exploring style, narration techniques, and
experimenting with dialogue. This unit will culminate with a major project, for
which students select their best writing samples formatted like a submission
for publication. We will be presenting our finished portfolios in coffee-house
style readings as a group for which other members of the community may
attend.

Literary Texts We will be exploring components from a wide range of

writers so students will be introduced to new possibilities. Time will be given
for students practice imitating the style or techniques of authors we read in
class. There will be
room for students to
explore literary texts Letter Grades GPA

Attendance:
As Hunter S. Thompson once said, "Half of life is just showing up".
Attendance is compulsory. If a student misses a class they would preferably
bring a note before the missed class, or at least the day after. Peer review
and discussions are important to the course and missing a class will make
finishing these tasks difficult. More will be discussed regarding attendance in
class.
Contact:
My website is available 24 hours a day, and will have all major assignment
and project rubrics available for download. Presentation schedules and due
dates will also be available on the website. <www.msjkirk.weebly.com>
