For the final project you will be demonstrating your knowledge of linear equations through statistics. You will collect your
own data set and then analyze it. Please be sure to follow the steps and be sure that your final project has everything on the
checklist. It will be due on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 29 at the beginning of your class.
ORGANIZE YOUR PROJECT WITH TITLES AND LABELS.
Step One:
Collect a data set of two related variables and create a table. You need to have at least 10 pairs of numbers. Here are some
examples of related variables:
- Distance and time
- Height and arm span
- Price and amount of something
- Height of an object and shadow length
- Diameter and circumference of circle
- Bounce height of a ball and height dropped
Check with Mila before collecting your data. You can collect your data from a magazine, the internet, on your own, or
wherever else you may find data.
Step Two:
Draw a graph on paper and describe your process to draw the graph (CT2).
Step Three:
Draw a linear regression and calculate the linear equation on paper. Describe your step-by-step process for calculating the
linear equation. Describe the problems or issues we face trying to do linear regressions by hand. Name a solution to these
problems. (CT1, MC1).
Step Four:
Use Microsoft Excel to draw a linear regression and to find the linear equation. Find the mean, the standard deviation, and
the normal interval using Microsoft Excel. Describe what the significance of these values is. Save your work following this
format: mcmackin7M_finalproject and send it to mmcmackin@campestre.edu.co with a subject line of Final Project. If the
files or email are not saved and sent this way they will not be graded. (CR1)
Step Five:
Describe your data by naming the x-intercept, y-intercept, and slope and labeling them in the graph drawn by hand and
equations, the one done by hand and the one done on Excel. (IM1). Describe the slope and the relationship between the
two variables (positive, negative, rise/run, as x is increasing, y is) (CR2). Make two predictions (one for x and one for y)
based on the equation from Excel. Check your x- and y-intercepts using your graph (the one done by hand) and equation
(the one done by hand)(IM2).
Step Six:
Answer the following questions:
Name one strength and one weakness you found in your processes while doing the project.
What strategy did you use to make sure you understood every part of the project and completed it correctly?
Name another situation you would use this strategy in and why it would be helpful in that situation.
