Connecting expository and narrative texts

Today's Task:
Each group has different lines from the poem If. Your goal is to
see how Rudyard Kipling conveys themes (rules), throughout his
poem, which is also portrayed in Bud, Not Buddy.

I am going to walk you through this

STEP-BY-STEP

Model:
Lines

Questions to consider

Paraphrase/ interpret
each phrase
If you take the chance
and risk your success/
achievements for
something else,

If you can make one heap of

all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of
pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at
your beginnings
And never breathe a word
about your loss:

and lose everything you

have, you have to start
from scratch without
telling anyone about what
you lost.

Themes (rules):
***When things go wrong, pick yourself up and start over with your
head held high.***
***Be aware of potential consequences before you take risks.***
***You need to take risks in order to be successful.***

Directions:
1. Generate scholarly questions to guide your understanding of
the text.
2. Paraphrase your assigned lines. This is your interpretation of
the phrase you read (answering the questions you generated
will help you do this).
3. Now that you have an understanding of the lines you
interpreted, what message do you think the poet is trying to
convey through these lines? Determine two themes (rules of
advice) the poet is implying.
4. Write down your themes in the center of chart paper.
5. Gallery walk: Discuss how the various themes from If that
your classmates discovered are portrayed in Bud, Not Buddy.
Write your thoughts on the chart paper- add to each other's
ideas.

Even though Grand Rapids is 24 hours away,
Bud decides to make the hike, since he thinks that

Bud lost his mom, but her memory

motivates him to find his father.

is the only way he can find his father.

When things go wrong, pick yourself up and

start over with your head held high.

After Bud escaped the Amoses, he did not let their

negativity affect him- Bud made a plan to find his
father.
