Today's Task:
Each group has different lines from the poem If. Your goal is to
see how Rudyard Kipling conveys themes (rules), throughout his
poem, which is also portrayed in Bud, Not Buddy.

Directions:
1. Generate scholarly questions to guide your understanding of
the text.
2. Paraphrase your assigned lines. This is your interpretation of
the phrase you read (answering the questions you generated
will help you do this).
3. Now that you have an understanding of the lines you
interpreted, what message do you think the poet is trying to
convey through these lines? Determine two themes (rules of
advice) the poet is implying.
4. Write down your themes in the center of chart paper.
5. Gallery walk: Discuss how the various themes from If that
your classmates discovered are portrayed in Bud, Not Buddy.
Write your thoughts on the chart paper- add to each other's
ideas.
