2 13.) What were the problems faced by Income in this case?

How
were the problems resolved by the new digital system?
The problem of NTUC Income is as follows:

NTUC Income faces delay day by day in business process and the
process were very tedious and paper-based.
The existing system in HP 3000 mainframe still frequently broke down.
Backup date in a costly and tedious process would risk losing important
data.
COBOL programs also faced multiple broke down which will make the
process become slower.

The problems of NTUC Income could be resolved by:

Providing the Java Based eBao Life System from eBao Technology.
The software comprised of 4 subsystems:
o Technology
o Policy Administration
o Sales Management
o Supplementary Resources
All applications resided on 2 or more software.
Minimize downtime occurrence due to hardware or operating system
failure.
Providing better communication with customers.

2 14.) What types of information system and business processes

were used by Income before migrating to the fully digital system?
The NTUC Income uses eBao Technology which consists of:

HP 300 mainframe hosted the core insurance applications as well as

accounting and management information system.
COBOL Program developed in early 1980s and maintained by
Incomes in-house IT team.
For the business process, transaction processing for policy
underwriting was still a batch process and information was not
available to agents and advisors in real-time.
To launch a new product, time taken were ranged from dew weeks to
months.

2 15.) Describe the Information systems and IT infrastructure at

Income after migrating to the fully digital system.
The information systems after migration:

Switched from eBao Technology to the Java based eBao Life System in
June 2003.
The software comprises of 3 subsystems:
o Policy Administration
o Sales Management
o Supplementary Resources
All applications resided on 2 or more servers where each connected by
2 or more communications lines which were load-balanced.
The entire IT infrastructure is replaced with more robust and scalable
architecture. For example:
o Scanner for all servicing branches
o Changing monitor to 20 inches
o Upgrading OC RAM size to 128mb
o New hardware and software
o Database servers
o Web servers
o Installing disk storage system
o Replacing LAN cables with faster cables
o Fiber optic backbone
o Wireless capability

2 16.) What benefits did Income reap from the new systems?
The benefits did Income reap from the new systems are:

The systems can be accessed anytime by staff and advisors.

Information sharing among staff members become faster.
Allowing Income to view summary of each customer.
All documents are scanned and stored on trusted storage devices
secure under new system
Minimizing downtime occurrence due to hardware or operating system
failures.
Cross-selling become easier and customer service could be improved
Simplified workflows cut policy processing time and cost by half.
Greatly reduce the time required to design and launch new products
from months to day.
Online support of customers, agents and brokers.

2 17.) How well is Income prepared for the future? Are the
problems described in the care likely to be repeated?
I think Income prepares very well for the future by switching to the Java
based eBao Life System from eBao Technology, and others as follows:

The management of information system changed to three levels

structure
Income decides to replace its entire IT infrastructure with more robust
and scalable architecture
Income also revamps its business continuity and disaster recovery
plans
Income has to throw away all paper records including legal documents.
Today, all documents are scanned and stored on trusted storage
devices secured
Income has to train employees who have been accustomed to work
with paper to use eBao Life System which might change the way they
work

For the problems, in my opinion, I do not think that the delay day to day,
tedious and paper-based will be repeated. With the introduction of new system,
Income is doing forward to the new environment and culture in the business process
which will enhance its performance and giving competitive advantage to Income
itself.
