Lesson Title/Topic: 4th Grade Turtle Head Multiplication

Target Concept: Multiplying a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number

Standards/Rationale: TEKS 111.6 4(B)
Lesson Objectives: The student will multiply 2-digit number by a 2-digit numbers on a
white board with 60% accuracy.
Assessment: The students will complete 5 of the 2-digit by 2-digit problems.
Materials: Projector, Internet connection with YouTube video, math flash cards, 2 digit
by 2 digit worksheet, white boards, markers, and timer.
Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)
The teacher will
Focus/mental set: Teacher writes5x2 on board, has
students solve. Teacher then writes 15x2, has
students solve. Teacher then writes 15x12, students
do not know how to solve. Teacher responds, well, a
turtle can.

Time: 5 minutes
Teacher input: Teacher will write on the whiteboard,
11x12. With a green marker, the teacher will draw a
turtle head around the numbers 2, 1, & 1. Then, with
a blue marker, the teacher will multiply 2x1 and 2x1,
and write down 22. The next step, is to and to follow
the next 3 steps (1) to check off carried numbers (there
are none in this first problem), (2), draw a red collar
around the number 2 and (3) lay an egg. With a purple
marker, multiply the other number 1x1 then 1x1. The
last step is to add the numbers using an orange marker.
Adding 22 and 110 to get the answer 132. Repeat this
process 3 more times using the problems.
2-The teacher will pass out the 2 digit by 2 digit
worksheet to the class and let the students do the
worksheet along with her. She will write on the
whiteboard, the first question, 11x13. With a green
marker, the teacher will draw a turtle head around
the numbers 3, 1, & 1. Then, with a blue marker, the
teacher will multiply 3x1 and 3x1, and write down 33.
The teacher will then follow the next 3 steps (1) to
check off carried numbers (there are none in this first
problem), (2), draw a red collar around the number 3
and (3) lay an egg. With a purple marker, multiply the
other number 1x1 then 1x1. The last step is to add the
numbers using an orange marker. Adding 33 and 110

The student will

All students involved will
listen, answer questions, and
complete classroom activity.

The students will follow along

with the teacher while she does
the first example. They will get
out their colored pencils for
each step. Once the worksheets
are passed out the students will
do the 2 problems with the
teacher.

to get the answer 143

3--Teacher will write on the white board, 11x15.
With a green marker, the teacher will draw a turtle
head around the numbers 5, 1, & 1. Then, with a blue
marker, the teacher will multiply 5x1 and 5x1, and
write down 55. Then follow the next 3 steps (1) to
check off carried numbers (2), draw a red collar
around the number 5 and (3) lay an egg. With a purple
marker, multiply the other number 1x1 then 1x1. The
last step is to add the numbers using an orange marker.
Adding 55 and 110 to get the answer 165.
Time: 15- 20 minutes
Guided Practice: 1-The teacher will write 13x11 on
the board. The teacher will ask the students to write
the problem on their whiteboards, and ask them to
hold up their board once they have drawn the
turtlehead. The turtlehead should be around the
numbers 1, 3, and 1 The next step the teacher will ask
the students to multiply 3x1 and 3x1 in blue marker.
The teacher will then have them hold up their answers.
The teacher will call on a student to list the next 3
steps (check off carried #s, draw a collar, lay an egg).
Ask the students to complete the next 3 steps, and hold
up white board once completed. For the 4th step, the
teacher will have the students multiply the remaining
numbers (1x1, 1x1) and hold up their answers. Finally,
the teacher will have the students add the numbers and
write their answer in orange marker and hold up once
completed. The students will add 33 and 110 to get the
answer 143.
2- Teacher will write on the white board, 14x11.
With a green marker, the teacher will draw a turtle
head around the numbers 1, 1, & 4. Then, with a blue
marker, the teacher will multiply 4x1 and 1x1, and
write down 14. Then follow the next 3 steps (1) to
check off carried numbers (2), draw a red collar
around the number 1 and (3) lay an egg. With a purple
marker, multiply the other number 1x4 then 1x4. The
last step is to add the numbers using an orange marker.
Adding 14 and 140 to get the answer 154.
Time taken: 15-20 minutes.

Students will pair off with their

math buddies and follow the
teachers example and do the
procedure with step by step
guidance with their colored
markers and whiteboard. The
student will answer when
called upon to list steps.

Independent Practice: Have students do 11x11,

11x16, 11x17, 11x18, 11x19.
1- Teacher will write on the white board, 11x11. With a
green marker, the teacher will draw a turtle head
around the numbers 1, 1, & 1. Then, with a blue
marker, the teacher will multiply 1x1 and 1x1, and
write down 11. Then follow the next 3 steps (1) to
check off carried numbers (2), draw a red collar
around the number 1 and (3) lay an egg. With a purple
marker, multiply the other number 1x1 then 1x1. The
last step is to add the numbers using an orange marker.
Adding 11 and 110 to get the answer 121.
2- Teacher will write on the white board, 11x16. With a
green marker, the teacher will draw a turtle head
around the numbers 1, 1, & 6. Then, with a blue
marker, the teacher will multiply 6x1 and 1x1, and
write down 16. Then follow the next 3 steps (1) to
check off carried numbers (2), draw a red collar
around the number 1 and (3) lay an egg. With a purple
marker, multiply the other number 1x1 then 1x1. The
last step is to add the numbers using an orange marker.
Adding 16 and 110 to get the answer 126.
3- Teacher will write on the white board, 11x17. With
a green marker, the teacher will draw a turtle head
around the numbers 1, 1, & 7. Then, with a blue
marker, the teacher will multiply 1x7 and 1x1, and
write down 17. Then follow the next 3 steps (1) to
check off carried numbers (2), draw a red collar
around the number 5 and (3) lay an egg. With a purple
marker, multiply the other number 1x1 then 1x1. The
last step is to add the numbers using an orange marker.
Adding 17 and 110 to get the answer 127.
4- Teacher will write on the white board, 11x18. With a
green marker, the teacher will draw a turtle head
around the numbers 1, 1 & 8. Then, with a blue
marker, the teacher will multiply 1x1 and 1x8, and
write down 18. Then follow the next 3 steps (1) to
check off carried numbers (2), draw a red collar
around the number 2 and (3) lay an egg. With a purple
marker, multiply the other number 1x1 then 1x1. The
last step is to add the numbers using an orange marker.
Adding 18 and 110 to get the answer 128.
5- Teacher will write on the whiteboard, 11x19. With a
green marker, the teacher will draw a turtle head
around the numbers 1, 1, & 9. Then, with a blue
marker, the teacher will multiply 1x1 and 1x9, and

The students will split into 5

groups of 3 and collaboratively
work the problems on their
whiteboards with the respected
colors for each step.

Closure: The teacher asks the students to participate

in the Fishbowl activity.

The student writes one question

they have about the topic of this
lesson. This can be something
for which they know the answer
or for which they want an
answer. Form an inner and outer
circle. Share question with the
person in front of you see if
they know the answer, switch
who is asking question, if time
