Grade Level: 4th and 5th graders

Lesson Focus: Catching and Throwing a Football,


Movement Concepts

# Of students: 20 Students

Equipment and Facilities: Eleven footballs, Twenty


Polly spots, and six orange cones. The activity will
be conducted on the grass area furthest away from
the entrance.

Safety Considerations: All equipment used during


this lesson will be age appropriate and placed in a
safe manner to reduce the risk of any injuries. Each
student will be spaced out to help prevent any
conflict or injuries. The teacher will verbally review
the rules and expectations before the start of the
activity. Before the start of class, the teacher will
have knowledge of any health related issues the
students may have, which will be provided by the
school. If an emergency occurs, the teacher will
remain calm while transporting the students to a safe
environment, based on the situation. If a student is
injured, the teacher will stop the activity and have
the students seated away from the injured student
while the teacher notifies the proper authorities
(YMCA supervisor) of the childs injuries. Each
student will be aware of the teachers signals. All
equipment will be placed on the ground/ floor while
the teacher is providing instructions.
Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies: The activities will begin
Previously Learned Skills: 14 of the 20 kids are
and end on the teachers mark. Students will be given former students of Latoyas so some of the previously
two warnings before having to sit out quietly on the
learned skills are team building skills,

misbehaving, or any behavior that is not allowed in
football. The kids who were not in Latoyas class do

students who were engaged in the altercation. The
rest of the students will be seated out the way of
harm until the situation has been resolved. Teacher
will use the 1,2,3 eyes on me. 1,2 eyes on you
cue to grab attention when needed.
Teaching Strategy: The instruction will be provided
by using an interactive approach and verbal cues
(cots) to assist the students in understanding the
techniques that will be used during the activities. The
teacher will also be used as a demonstrator when
needed to assist the learning process.

Student
Objectives:

Academic Language: The academic language that


will be addressed are cues of the skill, For catching
two primary languages will be used: Diamond
finger to the sky. Pinkies Together- fingers to the
toes. For throwing there will be three primary
phrases used which are Laces- make a C when
holding the ball, face target with non throwing
shoulder, and follow through.

Psychomotor (P): SWBAT execute the COTS of passing and catching a football with an 80%
success rate.
Cognitive (C): SWBAT recite the COTS and acknowledge when the COTS of passing and
catching a football are being demonstrated incorrectly 75% of the time.
H-R Fitness (H): SWBAT maintain at least 50% MVPA while engaging in physical activity
75% of the time.

need two volunteers to be sharks and the

will line up on the white base line
between the two cones at the end. Sharks
will tell the minnows to go. Once the
minnows hear the sharks call they will
have to try to make it to the other side
without getting tagged. If you get tagged
you will become a shark.

Transition
Once the instant activity is over the
instructor while use his attention cue and
direct students back to the white line and
have them take a seat to wait for
instructions.

Set Induction:
Today, I will work with you guys in depth
on the proper ways of throwing and
catching a football.
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to teach
the students the proper techniques of
throwing and catching a football before
being able to go into game play.

I will have the students keep the ball with
the partner who is closest to me (the back
line). I will have them put the ball in
between their feet until further
instruction.
Lesson Core 1- Passing and Catching:
Students will practice the COTS for
passing and catching a football with a
partner. The objective of this lesson is to
make sure the students are demonstrating
the COTS correctly. If each partner is
comfortable with catching and throwing
the football, they will be allowed to take
one step back after three consecutive
proper throws and catches.

Lesson Core 2- Keep It Up:


This activity will be ran the exactly the
same. However, the purpose of this
extension is to keep the football from
touching the ground. The student will
count each consecutive throw made
between them and their partner. If the
football drops on the ground, your count
will start over. The team with the most
consecutive passes will be the winners.
Demonstration Plan:
Two students will demonstrate as the
teacher provides verbal cues based on
the demonstration.

Adaptations
If I notice students are having issues
catching the pass consistently I will
intervene and either switch partners to
make sure the abilities are equal or have
the students move in closer to make the
passing and catching easier and more
attainable.

football will be instructed to place the

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES: While students are practicing passing and catching the ball with their partners,
the teacher will assess the students techniques using a formal assessment. The group who is spotted doing the
technique correctly will be used as a demonstration.
