2nd Year Extended Diploma in Music Technology

The Brief
You will now be putting into practice your newly gained skills as independent studio technicians. You will be hosting
clients for a two week recording period. There will be a further period for mixing and post production.
PART 1 Mix Fix
Prior to the 2 week recording period (07/03/16 18/03/16) you will be ensuring you have mastered the skills needed by
completing a series of technical exercises designed to ensure you are ready for the challenge ahead. You will complete
these in your Studio sessions and project studio work between 22/03/16 and 04/03/16. You are expected to put into
practice compression, eq and recording techniques gained during projects T4.2 Better Mixes and T4.3 Intro to the
Studio.

Record a drum kit independently and mix the resulting recording in your project studio sessions
Create a library of individual drum hits for the purpose of sample replacement
Deliver an augmented drum kit mix where kick, snare, and tom hits have been replaced by samples.
Tune a lead vocal using Melodyne.
Tune an instrument (bass or guitar) using Melodyne
Mix at least one dry run recording using multi channel drums, bass, guitar and vocals.
Create screen recordings (or deliver written submissions) explaining how you have used Melodyne, eq and
compression in your mix. Make reference to SNR, headroom, dynamic range etc..

You must provide evidence of the above on your private blog spaces by Friday 11th March 2016.

PART 2 Recording Clients


A two week period where you will be hosting clients from Miskin Music will then commence.
You are expected to manage, organise and run your own recording sessions competently and with minimal
assistance.
Professional Practice: Please be aware that you will be putting professional practice into action within The Miskin
Theatre, which is a publicly licensed professional environment in which you are effectively an intern being given the
opportunity to test your skills and gain creditable industrial experience.
A minimum of 3 mixes are due at the culmination of this process. These are to be posted to your collective blog
space. You will post an evaluative piece on at least 2 mixes to your private blog space. You will also provide a screen
recording or written piece of work explaining the technical process involved in your mixes.

PART 1
1 - Provide a mix of a multi channel drum kit
2 - Provide an augmented mix of a multi channel drum kit
3 Provide at least one dry run technical mix
4 Provide a screen recording or written submission explaining your dry run mix
PART 2
1 Provide a minimum of 3 completed mixes of client recordings
2 Provide a screen recording or written submission explaining your client mixes
