Executive Summary
This report documentsthefindingsofausabilitytestoftheRITpodiuminterfacecarriedoutin
April2015byourgroup.Themainpurposeof thetest wastoassesstheusabilityandfirstuse
intuitivenessofthepodiuminterfacefornewandlessfrequentusers.

PositiveaspectsaboutRITPodiuminterface:
Advanced functionalitiesincluding, but notlimitedto,controllingtwoprojectorscreens,
manipulating different input sources like document camera, HDMI, etc from one
touchbasedinterface.
PeninputbasedPCtointeractwiththematerialsdisplayedonscreen.

ImprovementareasforRITPodiuminterface:
Adherence to Normans design principles Feedback, Discoverability, Mapping and
Visibility of system state. In certain scenarios, participants found it hard to locate the
required functionalities to perform certain operations. In other scenarios, they were
confounded by the functions and its physical relevance to the objects around the
classroom. There was also a lack of immediatefeedback when the display states are
switchedfromontooffandviceversa.

Basedontheusabilityproblemsidentifiedinthistest,werecommend:
Modifications to the design elements behind the panel interface to incorporate the
aforementioneddesignprinciples

Page4of39

Purpose
We will conduct a usability testing study to assess the overall effectiveness of RIT
Podiuminterface.Thefollowingaretheobjectivesofthisstudy:

1. Assess the overall effectiveness of the RIT Podium interface, for users with
different degree of familiarity to the system, performing basic and common
presentingtasks.

2. Identify the discoverability level of thesystem from thestandpointofafirsttime

andoccasionaluser.
3. Identifyobstaclestocompletingadvancedpresentationtasksusingthepodium.

Page5of39

Study questions
1. How easily can the users understand the symbols and icons? Which ones are
problematic?Why?
2. Howeasilyandquicklycanusersgetstartedtoperformthebasictasks?
3. What obstacles prevent users from completing the setup activities before
presentation?
4. How easily can users set up the input sources and adjust the settings to their
needs?
5. What questionsdousersaskastheyworkthroughthesourcesetuptaskandthe
tasksfollowingthat?
6. Can the users use the advanced functionalities of thecontrolpanelwithoutany
assistanceorpriortraining?

7. Howquicklyandeasilycantheusersswitchbetweendifferentmodes?

8. Dotheusersfaceanydifficultiesduringthepresentation?Ifyes,whatarethey?
9. Is theresponse timeafterone operation the main reason of user frustrationand
subsequenterroroperations?
10. How do the users react when the systemworksin an unexpectedmannerafter
theyperformedausual,systemsupportedoperation?

Pilot Test
Process
For the pilot test, we followed the initial test plan.Theparticipantwasscheduledfor6thApril,
2015 in the RIT LOW 121135 classroom, where the podium interface is available. One
member of the team acted as theteammoderator, oneactedasthenotetaker, andtheother
memberwasthematerialsmanager.Thepilottookaround60minutesintotal.

Results
The pilot test proceeded as expected with no hiccups. The participantand theoveralltesting
procedure helpedus gain testing experience, andidentify the minor changesrequiredbefore
theactualusabilitytesting.

Changes
We made changes to the tasks, their description, and the order in which they will be
presented to the user. Some minor changes were made to the questionnaire, and better
strategiesweredevelopedformaterialacquisitionandsettingsadjustments.

Page7of39

Experimental Design
Method (test design)
We will use a within
subjects design for the study. In this within
subjects study, each
participant will work through all the taskslisted in thetask list. We will conduct up to 6
individual 60
minute usability study sessions. Each participant will perform all of the 6
major task paths using RIT Podium interface. Welluse20minutes ofeachsessionto
explain the session to the participant, review their background information, and then
conduct a post
test debriefing interview. During the middle 40 minutes ofthe session,
participantswill workonsettingupthepresentationbytryingdifferentinputsourcesand
workingtheirwayaroundtheRITpodiuminterface.

perform main tasks, including use the podium to show slides, using Doc camera to
show the paper material and manipulate two screen atthesame time on. The final 10
minutes will allow the test moderator to debrief the participant, as well as allow

Recruitment
There were 30 flyers postedin differentbuildings at Rochester Institute ofTechnology,
which include GOL, GLE, BOO, GAN, WAL, SAU, GOS and LOW. Participants were
selectedbasedontheirresponsestothescreenerquestionnaire.

We contacted between 1214 respondents through email based on the screening

criteria. We primarilyfocused onrecruitingpeoplewho hadprevious experience giving
presentation, willing to be recorded, and had no prior knowledge of the RIT podium
interface. In addition, the availability of the participants, the room, and team members

Figure17.AverageNumberofMistakeforeachTask

In summary, because the learning effect, task 5 (Synchronize The Source) andtask 6
(Close System) basically need less time and hints to be achieve.CompareFigure14,
15and 17,we found thattask 1 (Set up Presentation)needrelativeahighernumberof

Page22of39

hints and a longer times to be finished.Itis probablybecause Set up presentationis

the first task to finished and take time to get into the swing of things. For the Task 4
(Separate the sources to two display) have the most number of mistakes, and it also
took more time and hints to complete. This might indicate that theiconsandsymbols
which might be used in the separate the source is misleading or too vague for
participants to understand. Another indication wecould found in thesepictureis about
the task 3 (Use DocCam topresent paper material).Comparing Figure 14 andFigure
15, we found that while using document camera with longer times, it only needs few
hints to be accomplished. This might hint that icons and symbols in the task 3 (Use
Document Camera) might be understandable, but the task is complex it took a little
longertofinish.

The Volume control at the home page could present the voice from program,

The room mode is hard for participants to map the termto its functionality. We
suggest to changethelogic.Forexample,keepdisplay1anddisplay2 onthe
