Finder; American Community Survey 2012

When collecting primary data, some of the consistent themes identified were employment, followed by
the amount of elderly persons leaving the community. These tables were chosen since they represent the
primary data we found in zip code 27405, while also seeing how the rates in the community compared to
the home county of Guilford and the state at large. Looking at the employment data, half of the
workforce is working full time hours, while the other half are either not working or part time. A lower
percentage of people in the 27405 zip code are employed full time in comparison to North Carolina and
Guilford County. Guilford County has a higher rate of people attaining full time hours, so now it can be
extrapolated towards 27405 to say that the rest of the county has access to employment opportunities that
are not available in 27405. To keep in pace with the rest of the county and the state, 27405 needs these
same access to employment opportunities that the rest of the state has in order for them to have consistent
employment.
Zip code 27405 has lower rates of childhood disability compared to Guilford County and North
Carolina, but it does have a higher rate of disabled persons in adulthood. The majority of those with a
disability were retirement age. While 27405 has a lower rate of disabled children; the concern is that the
rates of adults with disabilities in 27405 outpaces Guilford County. There is a concern that disabled

retirees will not be able to get access to needed health services, since the county as a whole does not have
as large a number of disabled retirees.
Race

Educational Attainment, Zo Littman-Housing, Zoe Jones-Income

More than half of the population from 27405 consisted of African American followed by white
Hispanic, and other (which includes Asian, Native Americans, & two or more) that represented a smaller
percentage that makes up the majority population of the zip code. These numbers are significantly
different compared to Guilford County and North Carolina. Based on the data above, more than half of
the population in Guilford County and North Carolina are predominantly white with African-American
having the second highest population. Hispanic and other races are well below the 15th percentile across
all three areas shown above. There were no major differences between these two groups of race. White
and African American were the two largest groups across all three areas. This information reflected our
primary data collection such as during our windshield tour where the majority of persons in the
community seen were assumed to be African Americans (zip 27405).

Based on the US Census Data, the 27405 zip code stands out when looking at owner-occupied vs.
renter-occupied housing. The neighborhood zip code has a much lower owner-occupied percentage and a
much higher renter-occupied percentage. There are also noticeable differences in value of the home and
gross rent. For home value, majority of the homes owned in 27405 are under $149,999. Home value in
North Carolina and Guilford County are more normally distributed across the range of values. As for the
gross rent of homes, the prices are skewed toward the lower end, with people in Phillips Lombardys zip
code typically paying $749 and less. Again, the numbers for Guilford and North Carolina are spread out
evenly with $500 to $1,500 being the most common gross rent. Household size remains nearly the same
throughout all three comparisons. Based on this data and the primary data collected, a health concern for
27405 is income and how that reflects the community in terms of poverty and the health outcomes that
come from it. Due to lack of financial resources, home values and rent costs are low. This can contribute
to health disparities within the area.
