Introduction:
This lab is intended to decide the isotonic purpose of a potato cell. This is tried with checking the
molarity of a sugar arrangement. The molarity is the convergence of a solute in a dissolvable.
This is otherwise called the molar fixation. There are three sorts of arrangements in light of the
centralization of the solute. On the off chance that a cell is hypotonic, then the convergence of
solute is more prominent inside in the cell than all things considered. On the off chance that a
cell is Isotonic, then the grouping of solute is the same inside the cell and all things considered.
Ultimately, a cell can by hypertonic, which is the point at which the grouping of solute is more
prominent outside the cell than inside it. The objective is to get cells into the isotonic point. To
accomplish this, they experience dispersion, which is the net development of cells to circulate
them similarly, or be in the isotonic state. In this lab, the potato cells experience osmosis.
Osmosis is like dispersion, though it is a net development of dissolvable atoms to level.

Equipment

Potatoes
Pipets
Electronic Balance
Graduated Cylinder
Sucrose Solutions
Weighing Boats
Water
Cups

Procedure: 1. Use the following sugar (sucrose) solutions

1M = 34.2 g sucrose in 100 ml of water
0.8 M = 27.4 g sucrose in 100 ml of water
0.6 M = 20.5 g sucrose in 100 ml of water
0.4 M = 13.7 g sucrose in 100 ml of water
0.2 M = 6.8 g sucrose in 100 ml of water
0 M = NO sucrose in deionized water

2. Use six cubes of potato

3. Mass each potato cube, place weigh boat on balance before weighing, then write down their
initial mass in a table

4. Soak the potatoes in 10 ml of the appropriate sucrose solution overnight

5. Mass the potatoes again after taking them out of the solution using a weigh boat
(gently pat dry off excess solution)

6. Calculate the percent (%) change in each potato cube's mass

7. Gather class data and figure out the isotonic point

8.) CLEAN UP YOUR STATION!!

Sucrose Molarity

CONCLUSION:

Claim: The isotonic point is 0.3 Molarity.

Evidence: The graph above proves the claim to be right. The graph shows the information for
the data tables. When the solution was at 0.4M or higher than the potato lost mass. When the
solution was at 0.2M or lower, the potato lot mass. The graph shows how the trend line going
through 0.3M for the isotonic point.
Reasoning: While this membrane stops most things, water can pass through it. The water tends
to move towards higher concentrations of dissolved chemicals. That means that if the water
outside the cell is saltier than the water inside, water will move from the inside of the cell to the

outside. The isotonic solutions are the same inside and outside of the cell as the water left the cell
it was much like letting the air out of a balloon. As more and more of the cells lost water, the part
of potato became soft and flexible. Hypertonic solutions is where there are larger quantities
outside than inside.

Reflection: The level of confidence in the results is very high. Everything

was executed to the best of the ability. I would change the style of the way
the lab was done. In conclusion, results came out right and the confidence
level is very extraordinary.
