#1.

An evaporator system concentrating a weak liquor from 5% to 50% solids handles 100 kg of solids per
hour. If the same system is to concentrate a weak liquor from 4% to 35%, find the capacity of the system
in terms of solids that can be handled per hour assuming water evaporation capacity to be same in both
the cases.
#2. A drier is fed with a wet solid to reduce the moisture content from 80% to 15%. The product leaving
the drier is admitted to an oven which further brings down the moisture to 2%. If the drier can handle 1000
kg of wet solid per day, calculate: (a) The weight of the products leaving the drier and oven per day; (b)
the percentage of the original water that is removed in the drier and the oven.
#3. Milk powder is produced in a spray dryer which evaporates all of the liquid (water). 30% Milk is fed to
the dryer and inlet air at 170 C is also fed. 15000 m 3/hr wet air exits at 85C with 12% (by mole) water.
Dried milk exits with an unknown composition. Assuming the inlet air contains no moisture, Calculate:
a) Production rate of powdered milk
b) Molal flowrate of the inlet air
#4. For carrying out a nitration reaction, it is desired to have mixed acid containing 40% HNO 3, 42%
H2SO4 and 18% H2O by weight. Nitric acid of 69.5% by weight is readily available. Calculate:
a) The required strength of the sulfuric acid to obtain the mixed acid.
b) The weight ratio of the sulfuric acid to be mixed.
