The students will be in a small
group setting all sitting around
the teacher.
Tap into prior
knowledge/experiences
The teacher will have a KWL
chart and will tell the students
that they will be learning about
sea stars. The teacher will give
the students 2 minutes to think
about things they may already
know about sea stars. Once the
students have had time to
think, they will share their
thoughts with their group. The
teacher will write down
everything that is said onto the
KWL chart.
Next, the teacher will ask the
group what they want to know
about sea stars. They will have
two minutes to decide what
they wish to learn. Once time is
up the teacher will write down
everything that is said onto the
KWL chart.
Preview vocab/language
If the students happened to use
the vocabulary that will be
used in the book, the teacher
will point it out. The teacher
will then tell the students what
vocabulary to look for in the
story they are going to hear,
and to try to remember what
the words on the list mean in
the story.

Read literature selection
The teacher will read the short
story titled, Sea Stars by Lola
M. Schaefer.
Check for understanding
After reading the story the
teacher will ask the students if
they heard any of the
vocabulary words listed
previously, and if they
remembered what the words
meant in the story. Definitions
will be written down for the
students to see.
Do reinforcement activities
The students will do a follow
along drawing of a sea star
with the teacher. The students
will also label the major areas
of the sea star of which they
learned from the short story.
1. Draw a small circle in the
middle.
2. Draw 5 lines coming out
from different angles.
3. Outline the five lines with
large bumps.
4. Draw little circles
everywhere.

learned about sea stars after
hearing the story, drawing a
sea star, and labeling a sea
star.
