Rhythmic Poem

Grade Level: 1
Time: 15-30 minutes

Engine, Engine
1. Students will set a poem to a melody
2. Students will accompany the rhythm of the words
3. Students will identify phrases in a poem that appeal to
the senses
4. Students will read a poem
5. Students will demonstrate understanding of spoken
words, syllables and sounds

1. Pat a steady beat while reciting the poem
2. Do as I do Encourage students to pat as they listen
3. Are there any parts the same in this poem? (first and
last line)
4. If necessary, Listen for what is the same. Recite again.
5. Now listen for how many times I say Engine (4)
6. Recite again with students only saying engine
7. Are there any other words that are similar (nine, line,
8. Chant one more time with the students saying nine, line,
shine, engine
9. Whisper the poem with me
10. Put the words inside your head. Recite silently while
patting beat
11. Invite the students to say the last word out loud. See if it
is together
