Digital Collage
September 2014
91cm x 61cm
This piece is loosely inspired by Gerhard Richters hazy paintings of mountains
and candles. Those pieces reminded me of memories and how they lose their vibrancy
with age. I wanted to create a piece that felt familiar like a memory for me. This made
me think about how our memories and others memories of us fade away until we are
forgotten. I used my own image fading from view in this piece to present that idea, along
with a foggy field and the piece being in black and white.

Anna and the Train

Ink Block Print
October 2014
23cm x16cm
While making the block print I immediately thought of German expressionism and
especially Kirchners work. That pure emotion that can be presented through his work
is also presented through literature. I thought of the novel Anna Karenina and the
emotion I felt in Annas final scene. I wanted to represent this passionate scene through
a medium historically used to express emotion.

Child and Teacups

Ink Dry Point and Watercolor
November 2014
11cm x 16cm
This piece began as an interpretation of modern relationships between mothers
and children, but soon became a self portrait expressing my own relationship with my
mother. I was inspired by Mary Cassatts dry points of mothers and daughters. She
represents relationships with both characters as a bystander. I could only represent one
side of the story. Eventually as I drew, what was once the image of a nameless child
became a portrait representing my past self.

Cage
Mixed Media
November 2014
Approx. 33cm x 20cm
This piece was loosely inspired by Phoebe Washburns installation piece
Nunderwater Nort Lab. I wanted to interpret her nest-like piece into a relevant issue in
my life. I wanted to create and explore a narrative work. The piece can be interpreted
in many ways but it is clear that the piece tells the story of something that was once in a
cage then leaving said cage. For me, the piece was about growing up. I wanted
express the strength it takes to leave home and the restrictions it entails.

Self Portrait
Acrylic on Canvas
December 2014
91cm x 91cm
I was inspired by Renoirs The Bohemien. I wanted to focus on employing his
vast array of colors. This painting challenged me to create an extensive amount of
colors all without the aid of black, which brightens the work as a whole. I was also
moved by Renoirs philosophy of art while creating this piece. He said, Why shouldnt
art be pretty? There are enough unpleasant things in the world. I too agree with his
philosophy which is why a self portrait inspired by his work seemed so fitting.

Natural T-Bone
Mixed Media
January 2015
Approx. 26cm x 29cm
For this piece I wanted to focus on a global issue. Factory farming is a growing
industry in America and across the world. The unnatural, inhumane living conditions of
animals forces us to question whether our food it truly natural or not. This inspired me to
shed light on this question by creating a steak out of wire, hardware and bone. By
combining industrial and organic materials the piece infers that it is nearly impossible to
differ the two anymore.

Home-Town
Oil on Canvas
February 2015
30cm x 61cm
In this triptych I wanted to express my interaction with Milwaukee through
modern cafe culture. During the impressionists era artists painted cafe culture then, in
their style. For this piece I wanted to explore that same concept through a contemporary
style. For this I was inspired by local artist Janet Bruhn. She uses high contrast between
paint layers which I see a lot in contemporary art. Trying to embody her style was
challenging and it forced me to think about painting in a new way.

Mixed Media Collage
October 2015
26cm x 21.5cm
This piece was inspired by the work of the collage artist Richard Hamilton. I
wanted to explore the idea of creating a surrealist environment for a character in my
work. I was drawn to surrealism for this piece because it explores the confusing and
mystifying parts of our existence. I was inspired by my own experiences in the college
application process. For my peers and myself this was a rime of stress, anxiety, and
questioning. I wondered about my future and what environment I wished to live and
learn in for the next four years. I wanted to express my experience of feeling lost and
confused in this time through this piece.

Child in Mandala
Mixed Media Collage
December 2015
50CM X 37.5CM
This piece was inspired by Mandalas. They are typically circular images with
patterns encircling the center or a square with designs encompassing it to form a circle.
They are popular in Buddhism and are used to symbolize the universe. While they are
prominently used in Indian cultures, forms of the Mandala can be seen throughout the
world such as the rose windows of Catholic cathedrals. I wanted to explore the idea of a
universe and what it could mean. The universe could mean literally the universe and
everything exists, or it could be more personal. It could mean an individuals universe,
their life, their environment, their everything.

Bell Pepper
Mixed Media Collage
November 2015
74cm x 98cm
While I wanted to create my own piece and differ from Picassos, I was intrigued
by the use of string in his piece, Guitar. I wanted to explore this in my own piece. I did
this with copper wire in the upper right corner of my piece. I did this in an effort to
describe the image of the veins inside of the pepper. This and the other three
diminutional elements of the piece are somewhat of a success. It is sometimes difficult
to see these elements, like in the upper right and lower left corners. However, it is
successful in its interpretation of seeds and in its ink and color work.

Dreams
Paper Collage
November 2015
35cm x 28cm
I was inspired by the piece Collective Invention by Rene Magritte. I was intrigued
by surrealism and its way of combining images, so as to create new beings and
sceneries. I was drawn to Collective Invention because of its dream-like way of molding
the human image to nature. I wanted to explore thins in my own work. I wanted to do so
by creating a self portrait in which the shoulder becomes a scene of shrubbery. The
background was made of images of oceans and water. I wanted to create this blending
of my form to nature in a clam image.

Cotton and Thread

Photography
December 2015
13cm x 18cm
I wanted the piece to reflect a memory of mine. It was inspired by my time on the
coast of the Italian Riviera. Through my time there was brief, the landscape and the
emotions felt through the beauty of the area was engraved in my memory. I wanted to
express the felling of calm and content that I feel when I think of this time. I believed that
this was best expressed through an image of sleep. This was done through the blending
of what is seen outside, the image of my sleeping self, and the inside, the images of my

dreams. This blending of nature which depicted the coast of Italy and the images of
myself connect back to Magrittes surrealist works and his ideas of blending two
realities.
