Differentiation

facilitates this game. Students begin standing in a circle while

the teacher begins the game by stating things about
themselves (where they live, where theyve travelled to, what
they like, etc.). The teacher will pause after each statement,
and if a student has the same interest or fact about them they
will step forward saying Just like me! Statements should
progress from basic to rare.
Example:
1. I currently live in Lethbridge, Alberta.
2. I am in a drama class.
3. I like going to the movies.
4. I have one or more siblings.
5. I have a pet.
6. I completed some of my schooling outside of Canada.
7. I have been to Disneyworld/Disneyland.
8. I have gone swimming with stingrays.
The teacher may inquire about any new findings found through
this game (exp. Sarah has also done schooling outside of
Canada, where?)
Transition: Great work everyone, who wouldve known we
have so much in common. Now this next activity require us to
stay focused and work quickly, but always remember safety
first.

Group and Create

10min

Students will begin walking around the room in no particular

direction, simply filling the space. The teacher will stay on the
outskirts of the room and call out different commands that the
students will complete. Each command will begin with a group
of 2-30 (or however big the class is) and then the action.
Students will work quickly to form groups and then complete
the action.
Example:
o I am looking for groups of 5.
o Show me the number 8 with your bodies.
o
o

I am looking for groups of 3.

Show me a three-headed dog.

o

I am looking for groups of 12.

things down a few notches.

others to untangle.

Human Knot

15min

The teacher will split the class into groups starting with groups
of 4, and slowly building to groups of 12. Students will stand in
a circle and close their eyes; they will reach out with the right
hand and grab another hand in the circle. Then repeat this with
the left hand. Students can now open their eyes and they
should have both hands holding two other hands. Now they
must try to untangle themselves without breaking apart.

Closure (3min)
Say: Great work today everybody. Participation and
cooperation are important qualities in theatre.
Ask: Can one person tell my why we need to be able to
possess these qualities?
Say: Tonight I would like you to enter a brief paragraph in
your journal about todays lesson. Think about why we play
these games in drama? What is one thing you learned today
that you didnt know before class? How did you feel playing
these games?
The teacher can write these on the board.
Say: Make sure you grab all your belongings before you leave
the classroom.

Guess the Leader

Students will sit in a circle cross-legged on the floor. One student can
volunteer or the teacher can assign them to leave the classroom. As they
wait outside the classroom the teacher will quietly appoint a secret leader.
This person will be in charge of starting all the small movements (snapping,
patting on the legs, winking, tapping fingers, etc.) while everyone else
follows.
The class will try to make it as seamless as possible so the leader is hidden.
Once the actions have started the teacher will retrieve the guesser who will
enter the middle of the circle and attempt to sniff the leader out. They will
get three guesses. Then change out the leader and guesser.
This game will require eye contact, concentration, mirroring and fooling.

*A two-minute buffer is left for the lesson.
