1. Show that the function  f ( x ) = x x has an inflection point at (0, 0) but  f "(0) does not exist.
2. Show that the cubic function (a third-degree polynomial) always has exactly one point of inflection.
If its graph has three intercepts  x1 , x2  and x3  , show that the x-coordinate of the inflection point is
x1 + x2 + x3
.

3. Let  f and  g be two twice-differentiable functions such that the second derivatives are nonzero.
a) If  f and  g are concave upward on an interval  (a, b) , show that  f + g is concave upward on
(a, b) .

b) If  f is positive and concave upward on  (a, b) , show that the function g ( x ) = [ f ( x ) ]  is
concave upward on  (a, b) .

4. Discuss  f ( x ) = x 3  ( x + 4)  in complete detail: domain, local extrema, increasing/decreasing
intervals, and concavity, then sketch the graph.
