Discourse Community Map/Response

Communication leads to community, that is to understanding, intimacy and mutual

valuing -Rollo May. Have you ever thought about how many groups of people you belong to?
Well, many of them and they are basically called Discourse Communities, a group of people
who shared the same values and ways to communicate about those same goals. Now on society
is really important and also popular to share the same values, traditions and even emotions and
feelings. We mostly shared our emotions or ideas by writing communication, it will be really rare
when you actually share our ideas through oral communication, today we even write reports,
journals, essays, maybe something more usual like texting or chatting. Today I am writing about
my four discourse communities, college student (UTEP), criminal justice department, dance
team and my work environment, AT&T, and I would explain what you have to do to join the
community, the conventions that are needed, the genre that we use in every single them and at
the end, it comes the topics.
Being a college student makes me belong to my first community, like I said
sometimes we dont even realize it but we belong to too many of them. In order for you to
belong to the college student community, for me its basically the University of Texas at El Paso
(UTEP), in order for you to join and belong to the UTEP student body first you must apply and
get accepted, you must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher, get orientation that is for one or two days

and also sometimes is required to take some exams. The environment is always proper and
professional; you always must use the correct grammar. This might be the hardest one to get,
because like I said you have to have the proper words, you cannot be informal, because that
might be used against you, in order for you to get and reach you diploma you have to be, act and
think about a professional. MPA, APA, and Chicago style is always needed on your papers. The
genre at this point is mainly research papers, essays, journals, blogs and sometimes reports and
every topic is different for each course.
To join the criminal justice department at the University of Texas at El Paso, first
there is two basic classes that must be completed; CRIMJ 1301 and CRIMJ 1302 and try to get
an A on both of them. There are some basic requisites that are important for this carrier, such as
getting internships, get a fire-arm license, there is also a six-month academy in order to be a
CBP. This academy consists on physical training, training on special missions, how to manage a
situation of someone trying to bring illegal substances into the United States, also there is a little
bit of training on terrorism, this is not a community that everyone belongs to because in order in
stay in this community there has to be a lot of discipline, you have to try to be the best on
everything and always try to beat everyone else, that is how you will stand in the community and
maybe someday if thats what you really want, you can be the head of all that community but
that is time consuming and there is a lot of effort into it in order to be someone in this
community.
In order to be part of a dance community either at school or somewhere else there has to
be a lot of discipline, courage and effort. Discipline is needed to learn techniques because its not

just about moving the body, there is some technique to do every single movement and it is time
consuming for that reason there has to be a lot of patience too. Courage to try to be the best on
everything, to beat everyone because when it has to do with music or dance everything has to be
perfect you have to keep on practicing every day, in order to get perfection out of it because
dancing is a form of art. Dancing is a form of interpreting a song or a speech, to make people
have a feeling about the music or a speech, that is why there has to be a lot of effort into dancing.
Dancing is a life style, people might use it to get distracted, to lose stress or simply because thats
is what they love to do.

The At&t community consist of people answering phone calls all day to help people get
over problems either with their internet connection, their computer, their phones or any technical
problems. In order to stay in this community there has to be a lot of patience, understanding
other peoples problems might be difficult sometimes, there is rude people, it also depends on the
surveys people you helped or tried to help. There always have to be respect for the costumers and
also be polite to them. In order to join this community there are some step that have to be
followed such as applying for the job and get interviewed, then there is a three-week training and
after that there is another two-week training where you just have to be listening to other peoples
calls. After that you get moved to a designed apartment (ex. U-verse, technical support.) then
after that you have to be answering calls all day long and try to help people with their problems,
trying to make thing easy for them.

Membership: To be part of the

At&t family you must apply

Dance

Membership: To belong to this

community you must have
dance skills, tryouts at certain
times and placesm be
evaluated by judges to see if
you have enough skills to join
the team.
Conventions: Body to express
yourself, informal but
respectful for yourself and
others, be polite, responsible
and need to have a lot of
disipline.
Genre: Movements and dance
chart.
Topics: It all depends on the
show or performance it can be
forms Ballet and Jazz all the
way to Hip Hop and Break
Dance.

Criminal Justice
Membership: To join this
department at The University
of Texas at El Paso first you
must complete the 2 basic
classes 1301 and 1302 and
have an specific minor.
Conventios: Proper grammas,
mostly APA format sometimes
MLA, you have to cite every
single paper.
Genre: Research papers,
essays and reports.
Topics: Laws, correctionals,
courts, amendments and
drugs.

Utep
Membership: In order for you
to belong to this community
you have to apply first of all,
you need to have a 2.0 or
higher GPA, also take some
required exams and go to
orientation.
Conventions: Profesionalism
amd proper grammar is
always needed. MLA, APA and
Chicago format always have to
be used in papers.
Genre: Research papres,
essays, journals, blogs and
reports.
Topics: Every topic in each
course is diferent.
