For my first citation I decided to go towards the area of cyberbullying because bullying isnt just
done in schools, it is also done on social media and anytime outside of school. In this journal or
article, the main reason I chose it is because it proves a point that over the years since
cyberbullying has started and continues there hasnt been much done to try and find these bullies
and stop them. Usually the only way they are known and get caught is by telling on themselves
or by someone who knows their doing it, tells on them. In Canada and North America
cyberbullying has been the main debate for the past couple of decades. Usually the reason that
people are cyberbullied today and in the past couple of decades has been because of sexting.
However, this is more commonly seen with females then males, but both genders as a whole. It is
said in this journal that since so much cyberbullying has gone on with no reports of it that
bullying is always fallen back upon. Meaning that, like in the journal, at work when someone is
being bullied; they may not say they are being cyberbullied, but that they are only simply being
bullied. In this journal there is a word called victimology, which is studying how victims and

Wright 2
their offenders are in a relationship or what type of relationship they have or had. Which leads
into the term cybervictimology which is the same thing, but studied through computer based
situations. This article plays a huge role in being part of my paper because it shows good
statistics and gives good information showing that there are problems with bullying and
cyberbullying all over the world and in places such as the work place. Cyberbullying is just one
of the many branches of bullying that I want to go over and discuss in my paper, it plays a huge
role in todays society.

working together to address bullying." Education 133.2 (2012): 283+. Opposing

This article interests me and goes along with what Im studying because not only is it talking
about bullying and harassment, but it is telling of a program that can be developed to stop
bullying in multiple schools based on the schools policies. It points out that counselors are
important in this process of creating the program because they talk to the students and know their
personal business so the counselors can teach and inform all of the teachers in the schools how to
connect with the students. It says in this journal that statistics show that bullying and harassment
has been around, but is decreasing more and more as the years progress. However, these
statistics dont include elementary schools, so there could be even more of a difference and
bullying in elementary schools could be just as bad as in middle or high school, which is what
the statistics are focused on. Since there has been more and more deaths or suicides from
bullying the government has made it a rule to withhold funds if rules arent being set to help

Wright 3
decrease bullying and harassment in schools. Since these programs and policies have been made
and implemented since 2010, bullying and harassment has decreased some. It is most often
reported that when students are being bullied, some kind of adult, faculty, or staff is present when
it happens, but they may not have heard or noticed because they are focused on the work or
business at hand. Many students are known to stay home because they are afraid of being bullied
or harassed at school. This will be helpful when I write my paper because I can tell how many
students actually get bullied and I can show how bullying has decreased. So, in all this the article
is very influential because I have seen information presented and statistics showing me how
many students get bullied and multiple people in schools, and it shows parents are trying to
create programs to stop bullying and harassment.

Even more common in todays society, people who are not so called straight get bullied and
harassed way more than would someone who came into school with hot pink hair because in
todays society being gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc. is not normal for most. Especially in elementary
or middle schools because the students there are still young and learning about sex, so they have
not fully matured enough to understand that everyone has their own opinion on certain subjects,
and that even though someone may not be straight; they are no different than a straight person.
Along with pointing out that government or society considers same-sex families are not so called
families; they are different, illegitimate, or abnormal (Robinson, 2005, p. 20). When in reality
they are the same, just as if they were a heterosexual couple. To help study, show statistics, and

Wright 4
try to stop bullying and harassment to these individuals; there was a study done on five
homosexual males who survived harassment and bullying in high schools in the United States.
These studies were done by the author of this article interviewing these young men and seeing
how what they wore affected how they got picked on or whether any type of authority did or
didnt do something to help the bullying and harassment stop. In one interview there was a male,
Ben, who was not open about being gay and still isnt, but he did stick up for his friends and
people being bullied in high school for being gay and in college ended up dating a girl to hide his
liking of males. This in turn made people bully him for sticking up for those people; the bullying
wasnt stopped. In another interview it told of a male, Max, who was open about being gay and
about his tragic story of being on a bus one day and being bullied. He got choked, punched, and
pushed back into the seat on the school bus while his little sister was present; this had a huge
effect on him being open about being gay. This article will help my paper a lot because it gives
actual examples and recounts of people who tell their story on how they got bullied. This is real,
live information that can play a key role in showing why some people get bullied; such as being
gay. This article is relevant because it shows that even when it comes to showing who you would
prefer to date, can affect how a person sees you and whether you are going to be bullied or not.

The fourth journal I pulled up is a study showing students in grades 8th, 9th, and 11th who took a
survey on bullying and harassment in their schools in 2013 in 505 schools in Minnesota. This

Wright 5
survey used a method of using five different areas in school dealing with why a student may get
bullied because of how focused or unfocused they may be, and how close they are to their faculty
and staff. Also how safe they may feel at school or how the school may handle disciplinary
actions. Studies show that in schools with a higher number of students, who are focused, students
are less likely to get bullied or harassed as compared to schools with fewer students and who
have less focus, students get bullied and harassed more frequently. Also, in this study there is a
question asking how safe a person may feel at the school, and the results showed that these
people who feel more unsafe become the ones who were more bullied or harassed compared to
students who felt safe. The conclusion this survey and study has come to conclude is that the
only way to make bullying and harassment stop is by creating and going forth with prevention
programs. This article isnt very important, but there are certain factors and examples provided
that I can use in my paper as extra information. These programs will be aimed at decreasing
bullying and harassment; along with improving how safe the students feel at the school they are
attending.

Zhou, Ying, et al. "Bullying As a Risk for Poor Sleep Quality among High School Students in
China." Plos ONE 10.3 (2015): 1-14. Academic Search Premier. Web. 27 Feb. 2016.

For my final article and citation I chose to write about an article I found on whether 23,877 high
school students in Guangdong Province, China slept well or not very well after being bullied,
harassed, both, or whether they were the ones bullying others. To figure out the amount of
students not sleeping well and how many were being bullied or harassed, they used the
adolescent health status questionnaire. The results showed as I expected that these students who

Wright 6
were being bullied or harassed actually slept less than students who werent being bullied or
harassed. Along with the students who were actually the ones bullying others and not being
bullied themselves actually slept less as well. It has been proven and shown that many high
school and college students dont get as much sleep as other aged students just for the simple fact
of other activities that they participate in, but knowing that the students are being bullied or
harassed plays a bigger role because this causes even more problems with losing sleep.
Continuing on that females and people focusing on their weight or body type may not sleep as
much either. Especially if this causes them to be bullied; it makes their self-esteem go down and
would cause them to think about themselves differently all the time, which in turn can cause
them to stay up at night and not want to sleep. Studies have also shown that not only in China is
this prevalent, but in other places as well; in high schools for instance in the United States. In the
article, the information provided is helpful and can give a spin to my paper by me mentioning
that bullying or harassment can lead to people not sleeping as well. As someone reads about
bullying they may not consider how unhealthy a person can become, they may think that
someone being bullied would be sad or consider death, but they dont actually know how
unhealthy a person can be in mind or body wise. This is a different perspective than what I
planned on going towards, but I love the idea of knowing that people may not sleep as well
because of being bullied, it shows that not only does bullying mess with peoples lives, but it also
messes with peoples health.
