Balance of powermeaning
A large number of nations with varying
degree of power exist and each nation
tries to maximize its power.
The power of one group is balanced by
the other opposing group. So long as
there is this type of balance, there is
peace.

DEFINITIONS

Inis L. Claude- The trouble with the


balance of power is not that it has no
meaning but that it has too many
meanings.
George Schwarzenberger- balance of
power as an equilibrium or a certain
amount of stability in international
relations.

TYPES OF BALANCE OF POWER

There is two types of balances;


The simple balance which exists
between two nations or any two groups
of nations of nearly equal power.
The multiple balance exist among many
nations or group of nations, balancing
one another.

IMPLICATIONS OF THE
TERM

When one group is referred to as having


the balance of power in relation to other
groups.
Balance of power when identified as a
policy means that unbalanced power is
dangerous.
Kind of arrangement for the conduct of
international relations in a multi state
world.

Favour the status quo
Real balance of power seldom exists.
It offers both an objective approach of a
historian and subjective approach of a
statesman.
