Abortion Rights
On June 15th, 1972, my mother was born to high school sweethearts. Her birth mother
did not tell her boyfriend, nor her own family, that she was expecting. At the age of 20, my
mother's biological mother was living in a maternity shelter here in Evansville, Indiana. She was
supposed to move to California but never did. My mothers biological father was a total hippie.
He had long hair and claimed that he, needed to find himself before he could take care of a
child. The following year, on July 19th, 1973, my mother was adopted. Thankfully, my mother
was adopted by such an accepting and loving family. Adoption changed the course of my
mothers life, and my own, and gave her the best chance in life. My grandparents had one child
on their own and adopted two. This act of kindness and love made my family grow, while
strengthening it as well. Adoption affected my life personally, and some day I hope to adopt a
child and give him/her a better opportunity to follow their dreams. Abortion is a crime against
humanity and should not be an option.
Being pro-life means that one does not believe in abortion and the killing of a fetus. A
baby starts to develop quickly and hearing the human heart beat is typically the number one
reason couples do not choose abortion. Abortion is performed is such a gruesome, horrific way
that would cause most to cringe at the thought. To start off, a doctor will insert a loop-shaped
knife into the womb through the cervix, next, the knife scrapes the wall of the uterus, cutting the
baby into pieces. This type is typically performed on a fetus between week seven and twelve.

Skin starts to form on the fetus between week five and week eight (What to Expect 2). Prochoice is the right for a woman to do to her body as she pleases. Most agree that a woman should
have the right to do whatever she wishes to her OWN body, but not to another tiny body inside of
her. By taking away an innocent life, the baby does not even have a chance at life. Pro-life
means that all who are created, deserve the chance to create a life for their own.
Adoption is a great choice that many around the world are turning to. Couples, and even
single women, are choosing adoption as an alternative. Between 10% and 15% of couples in the
United States struggle with infertility (Mayo Clinic Staff). Infertility has caused a shift with
adoption. Between 2000 and 2001, over 127,000 children were adopted. Only 8 years later that
number had increased to almost 136,000 children being adopted in that year (Child Welfare 1).
With this being said, many couples are choosing adoption. Even couples who are able to have
children, and do have children on their own, such as Jep and Jessica and Willie and Korie
Robertson from Duck Dynasty, adopt as well. Adoption is an option, and a great one at that.
Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra from MTVs Teen Mom series chose adoption. They understood
that they would not have been able to provide for their little girl, so they decided to give her a
stronger chance at life. By choosing adoption, they still get to see her every now-and-then, and to
this day they agree that they would not have it any other way.
(ask how to rephrase this) Currently, around 38 states have fetal homicide laws (NCSL).
These laws protect unborn children. If a woman who is pregnant is murdered, the convicted
person will be tried for two murders. If, by law, you are killed with a person inside of you, two
death certificates are printed, and two human lives are recognized. No matter ones religious
standpoint, about 74% of the U.S population believes that we were created by a higher being
whom had a purpose for us all (Jones 1). Most Christians believe in a God who created every

single one of us. If God created that child, He intended to and wants that child to be here on
Earth. Imagine the future doctors, lawyers, dentists, preachers, or movie stars that could have
been, but were not given the chance. An innocent child that was aborted could have changed the
world, they could have made a difference if their path was different.
Many people have beliefs that are contrary to being pro-life. One of the hardest subjects
any person can talk about is rape. Rape victims go through a certain type of trauma that seems
indescribable. Although rape is a difficult subject, that child is half you. To blame the baby and
have it killed is not a way to recover from the situation. Making a baby simply go away will
not make the feelings go away. That child could have an opportunity at a better life if it was
impossible for one to care for him or her.
Additionally, teen pregnancy is continuing to decrease, but is still prominent in our nation
and around the world. Sadly, some teen parents cannot handle the stress of being pregnant at
such a young age and chose a path that will end that problem. While being too young may be an
excuse to not be able to raise a child, it is never an excuse to kill a child. Adoption is the best
option for those who are incapable of providing for their baby.
But what if the mothers health is at risk? If the mothers life is at risk, should the child
be killed to save the mother? There have been hundreds of thousands of cases where the
mothers life was at risk but her and the baby turned out okay. Most women choose to stay
pregnant and risk their life.
In the future, I would like to see abortion be illegal by law, and even stronger by moral
standard in our country. My opinion remains, abortion is a crime against humanity and is unfair
to the fetus. With adoption being an option, I am here today to protest my beliefs towards
abortion. Rather a couple is prepared for a child or not, or a baby is planned or not, removing the

child from existence will not solve all problems. I challenge you to think about everyone around
you, to consider your loved ones, and think about them not being around because their life was
taken too early. What would you do? How would your life be affected? Just remember that
adoption is always an option.
