Implications for teaching and learning

During the time of global learning inquiry, I have learned a lot about
developing a question, gathering information and creating a project. I
am also eager teach high school aged students to do a project-based
inquiry especially when they are learning science.
I hope students will become awareness to protecting environmental
issues and research the impact of globalization on it. The learning
goals should according to the Common Core State Standards: High
School Science.

RST.9-10.1.Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science texts, attending to the
precise details of explanations or descriptions.
RST.9-10.5.Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a text, including
relationships among key terms.
RST.11-12.8.Evaluate the hypotheses, data, analysis, and conclusions in a science text, verifying
the data when possible and corroborating or challenging conclusions with other sources of
information.
RST.9-10.9.Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources
(including their own experiments), noting when the findings support or contradict previous
explanations or accounts.
WHST.9-12.6.Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publishes, and update writing
products in response to ongoing feedback.
WHST.11-12.2.Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of scientific
procedures/ experiments.

I would like students to do a similar inquiry project in science class for

students from grade 10. Students should start with a good question for
inquiry. Students can be divided into four groups with four different
topics about global warming, deforestation, biodiversity and water
scarcity. Each student should develop his or her own question related
to the main topic. I will provide guidance to adjust their questions and
suggestions to use Question Formulation Technique to refine them.
Then I will give them enough time to research and analyze resources
and also I will provide them some useful sources to start with like what
I have searched when I do my inquiry project. I may check their
progress of searching information and give them feedback in time in
depth they need to explore. They should have strong claims and
findings to support them. Then Students should demonstrate their
understandings through multiple media. It can be a PowerPoint, Prezi,
VoiceThread or a movie like these that can express their ideas and
understanding.
Through this process, they may get better idea of globalization and
how to protect environment. The most challenge part is applying
knowledge to the real life. Students will not only improve their inquiry
skills but also realize the issue about environment. Then our planet will
get better and better in the future.
