Discuss the question assigned from the list below with your partner and be ready to present you answer (be creative) in class on the scheduled date (tba) 3 minutes! 1. What is Healthy People 2020? Healthy People 2020 is a document that aims for reaching certain goals to attain a healthier lifestyle by the year 2020. 2. Explain the reasons behind recent efforts to make the promotion of physical activity engagement a central goal for school physical education programs. The promotion of physical education engagement is made the central goal for PE programs because if students are dropping out of PE they are not receiving the knowledge they need to make healthy choices nor are they learning lifelong activities. These lifelong activities could help students maintain a healthy weight and prevent type 2 diabetes. 3. Explain why efforts to raise physical fitness levels in youth have been largely unsuccessful? Its been unsuccessful because many physical education programs have been based off of team sport which might not attract the non-athlete student. Also, the amount of time spent doing activity is limited because of class time. 4. Explain how physical maturity affects the physical skills of students. The bigger, faster and stronger you are, the better able you will be to perform activities. As the body grows, students become more used to their frame promoting better balance and coordination. This will improve the students overall ability to perform a task. 5. Explain the harmful effects that being overweight can have on the health and well-being of a student. Being overweight can cause heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression. All of which, may lead to a shortened life span. Childhood obesity has been on the rise and while physical education cannot solve this issues, we can teach healthier behavior.
6. Discuss the impact of physical fitness and activity on academic
performance. There is no higher priority in life than health. Without it, all other skills lack meaning and utility. In the reading, it was said that there was a strong enough link between P.E. and academic success. However without promoting good health for the home of the brain will one's academic achievement matter? The book argued that without a healthy body our ability to read and write becomes obsolete. However, in a presentation at MAPHERD, one study showed how activity before learning increases brain activity. This waking of the brain showed improvement in the student's learning ability over the course of the day. They backed this argument up with with a study on less class time and more physical activity and the statistics showed that the learner did not go down at all for the students and it actually went up a little bit more. This is interesting because the students had less learning time than usual. 7. Identify safety guidelines for exercise and physical activity that should be addressed and followed by physical education teachers. Safety guidelines include: the avoidance of physical injury or harm, to maintain the development of positive attitudes and feelings about exercise. Performing moderation of tasks is a way to maintain safety and also keeping students interested. It is okay to perform activity when it is hot outside; just keep in mind the students require hydration and sunscreen to prevent sun burns. 8. Explain the rationale for assigning fitness workloads on time rather than distance or number. Assigning fitness workloads on time rather than distance or number is important because students are more likely to fulfill the time requirement rather than distance or number. They can also keep track of how much they are able to do within a certain time frame giving them the opportunity to compete against their own score to improve on their ability. For a physical educator, this is a good way to show improvement.
