PHED 239: High School Module
Worksheet - Chapter 3

Be prepared to discuss in class:

1.
As a physical educator, what are the implications of grouping high school students by
chronological age rather than by developmental level? Give examples.
Grouping high school students by chronological age rather than by developmental age can cause some problems in
physical education classes. This approach can be risky, because there could be four or five different developmental age
levels within any given chronological age. For example, students who are in high school might vary in age range by as
many as four years. The book says that even middle schoolers in the seventh grade could contain students who have
developmental ages ranging anywhere from 10-14 years old, and maybe even a broader gap is possible. Physical
education teachers must be aware of the age discrepancies in their classes in order to choose developmentally
appropriate activities for all students, because classes that solely grouped by chronological age could very easily have
students who have different physical abilities, which will affect their performance in physical activities.

2.
Share examples (at least one each) of characteristics (physical, social, emotional, and
intellectual) of high school students, and the implications for each trait.
Physical Characteristics
When the bone growth and the ossification process are complete for
most students, the motor ability and coordination improve quicker
during this time period.
Physical Implications
Instructional progressions over at a much faster rate.

Excellent time to improve motor skills and learn new skills.

Social Characteristics
Peer groups teach students group loyalty yet independence from
adults and social activities such as dance and athletic events
dominates the lives of high school students.
Social Implications
Student choice.
Be able to express their opinions and ideas.
Emotional Characteristics
There are fewer mood swings and students seem to be more stable
emotionally.
Problems with fighting, extreme competitiveness, and arguing over
issues start to diminish.
Emotional Implications
Need additional experiences with emotional control.
Intellectual Characteristics
High school students memories and their abilities to reason,
concentrate, imagine, and think conceptually have improved and
continue to develop. They have a large base of knowledge and
experience.
Intellectual Implications
Focusing on the why of physical education and the objectives of
the program.
