Single Parent Families

By: Alexis Escobedo

Single Parent
Families

Since the 1960s the rise of single parent

families has steadily increased.
Compared to the 9% of single families that were
reported in 1960, in 2000 there was a reported
26% of children living in single parent homes.
More than half of kids in major cities like
Detroit, Los Angeles, and Washington live in
single family homes.
A big role in this is the fact that many baby
deliveries are from women whom are not
married.
As societies stopped being more and more
traditional, more and more single parent

How Society
Members View
Single Parent
Families

Society holds the standard of family to

be two people raising their kid or kids.
So when society sees a single parent
family they are more often than not
frowned upon, or in some cases viewed
as heroic.
People who do have a two parent
family at times sympathize, while
those who are also from a single
parent home may empathize.

How Do Children
in Single Parent
Families View
Themselves

Some children may grow up independent

because many of them grow up learning
things that their parent cannot teach them.
On the other hand, single parent families are
really common this day and age, and that can
help a bit, knowing there are many others out
there like you.
Many of these children from single parent
homes have problems in school and later on in
life, with jobs, and their own families.

How Has Single

Parent Families
Changed Over
Time

Back in the 1960s, the percent of single parent

families was much lower.
Now it cannot even be considered a non
traditional family because there are so many of
them around.
Back in the day it was something many were
shamed on, now there is more praise about
raising a kid on your own.
There was not as much help as single parent
families have now, with things such as education
and their finances.

What Has
Caused
Change

People change over time as society and

the year changes.
They are more accepting snd open to
things.
Before thinking was more conservative
on the traditions of family, and now
people have accepted single parent
families more.
More and more people are having kids
and not being married.

How Would
You Improve
Single Parent
Families

Get more financial help for the parents,

because many of them work long hours and
are not able to spend needed quality time with
their children.
Get help in the childrens education, because
statistics show that many children from single
parent households struggle in school and in
college.
If all this is done early in the childs life, they
can be close to getting as many resources as
those with two parents.

Major
Participants

Both the mother or father of the household are

major participants.
And also the children from the families are
major participants.
The parents are a guide for the children and
the children follow.
Single parent families would be of lower status
according to society, because the standard is a
two parent home.

Does your
institution
workbetterfor
some members of
society (as opposed
to others)

Yes it works for some members of society

because some people are in the same situation
and there are many support groups out there,
and they help and motivate eachother.
Some people would rather be a single parent than
to bring an unhealthy relationship with another
person into the family, potentially harming the
child physically or mentally.
Some people prefer on taking on the role of being
a mom and father rather than depending on a
spouse.

Functionalist
Theory
A functional theorist would not
consider a single parent family to be a
real family. To be functioning the
family must consist of several parts,
and if they are missing a family
member, it is detrimental. Everyone is
supposed to have their own part and if
they do to the family is off balance and
is not good for the well being of the
family.

Conflict
Theory
In society the single parent
families have less power than two
parent families. Two parent
families have more resources.
Single parents families kids tend
to have problems socializing and
in school. Single parent families
are more likely to be poor than
those in two parent households.
