First Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln is a speech delivered by Abraham

Lincoln who was elected as the 16th president of the United States in 1860. Lincoln
was the first Republican president in American history and highly favored by the
North. Soon after he was elected, South Carolina seceded and the Confederate
States of America was formed by 7 states including Alabama and Texas. The
Confederate States of America started the secession movements in hope of
restoring pre-republican party Union, but Lincoln refused to compromise. Lincoln
starts his speech by quoting his former speech I have no purpose, directly or
indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists.
He stated that he had no intention to get involved in abolition of slavery and he
promised to not to interfere with slavery in the South. He then goes on to address
the issue of secession in the South. He explained the reason why he saw secession
as a rebellion rather than a legal political action is that the election is constitutional
and he had the responsibility to make sure every state follow the Constitution of
United States in which the government is established by the wills of people and all
U.S. citizens have rights to change the government through election but not
secession. He continues to address to the controversy of slavery by referring to the
Fugitive Slaves Act This, I think, cannot be perfectly cured, and it would be worse in
both cases after the separation of the sections than before. in which he talked
about the different opinions of both the North and the South on slavery and was an
important issue that needs people from both sides to compromise until a solution
was formed. In protecting the nation, he also claimed that he would consider using
force to keep the nation together if necessary. Lincoln focuses on making peach
with the South by stating Physically speaking, we can not separate toward the
end of the speech. He again tries to reconcile with the South This country, with its
institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it ensured people that majority
makes decision for the country and peoples actions are enforced by the
Constitution itself. At the very end of the address, he appeals to audiences pathos
by saying We are not enemies, but friends in hope of persuading rebellions in the
South to stop the secession and help preserve and build a better Union.
In addition to not interfere with the current slavery in the South, Lincoln also
declared that he would not allow to expand slavery into other territories. In
eliminating the fears of southerners, he stated that he has no interest in abolition of
slavery and states in the South still have their rights and privileges to keep their
slaves. However, he stands firmly with Republicans in serving this country by
upholding the Constitution of United States. The intended audience of this speech
are all the citizens, especially people in the South. The purpose of the First Inaugural
Address is to clearly state his position regarding the conflicts within the country and
reconcile with the South in hope of preventing the Civil War. Lincoln expressed his
opinions on slavery and secession in his speech and also referred to legal
documents like Constitution of United States and Declaration of Independence
as facts to persuade his audience. The sources he used in the speech are credible.
Understanding this particular speech is important because it addressed the issue of
slavery in which most of the Americans believed to be the cause of the Civil War.
Lincolns first Inaugural address also showed his attitude toward secession in which
indicted the actions he would take in the Civil War to keep the Union united.
