Flooding
Flooding occurs when the discharge of the
high and it floods the banks. The main
reasons why flooding occurs will be shown
in the next few slides. The discharge of a
river is how much volume of water goes
past a given point.

Precipitation
Precipitation is a factor of flooding because
the rate that that the soil will become
waterlogged would happen quicker
therefore surface run off will increase. This
would mean that the water is running
straight through to the river. Meaning the
river level would rise.

Physical features
The size and shape of a rivers drainage
basin dictates how much precipitation the
river can receive and the lag time which is
how quickly it can arrive. A large drainage
basin means that the rivers catchment area
is large so it will collect a lot of water,
increasing discharge.

Physical features
The number of tributaries flowing into a
river affects the likelihood of floods. If a
river has a lot of tributaries, the rivers
discharge will be much higher because lots
of water will be entering it from its
tributaries. After heavy precipitation, the
discharge will rise even more and floods are
likely, especially at confluences as this is
where discharge is highest.

Human Factors
Human Factors include urbanization mainly.
Building on land would mean less
forestation and building means concrete
and that is impermeable therefore that
would increase surface runoff and also
human usage like sewage systems all effect
the discharge
