PHED 239: High School Module
Worksheet - Chapter 3
Be prepared to discuss in class:
1.
As a physical educator, what are the implications of grouping
high school students by chronological age rather than by
developmental level? Give examples.
- Grouping HS students by chronological age rather than by
developmental age can cause many problems in a P.E. setting. The
reason there is a problem with this method is because within a
chronological age there could be numerous developmental ages. For
example, one 18 year old HS student could possess a 12 year old
developmental age where the other HS student is at a 19 year old
developmental age. Just because both these students are at the
chronological age of 18, pairing them up together would make it
difficulty for either of them to gain anything since they are at such
different skill levels. P.E. teachers must be aware of this when
grouping.
2.
Share examples (at least one each) of characteristics (physical,
social, emotional, and intellectual) of high school students, and the
implications for each trait.
- Physical characteristic- increase in motor ability and
coordination. Students at this age are close to full physical
maturity.Motor ability and coordination improve quickly and overall
skill progression can move at a faster rate.
- Social Characteristic- At this age level, social activities are
very important. Grouping in peers will provide behavioral standards.
Examples of what to wear, how to act, and what to say can be forced
upon students. Stressing the importance of having students create
their own opinions and ideas is crucial.

- Emotional characteristics- Most HS students have completed

their pubertal cycle. This means many are more comfortable in their
bodies compared to middle school. This can cause fighting and
extreme competitiveness. PE teachers need to model appropriate
emotional control and behaviors.
- Intellectual characteristics- Students at this level have a large
knowledge base and many experiences. PE teachers need to focus
on the why of PE and objective.
