The launch of the Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival certainly

tested the tastebuds last week.
The opening of the annual event, which was hosted by
the Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association at Jeff Jones Plants
and Produce, saw an arrangement of mouth-watering treats
made from local produce by local businesses.
Fresh fruit, refreshing iced tea and delectable cakes were
provided by Baby Black Espresso Bar, Little Lucky Caf and
Angelos Bakery.
To be held this Sunday (March 13), the Bacchus Marsh
Harvest Festival offers a taste of autumn produce alongside
an insight into local farming practices.
The harvest trail will include pick-your-own and fresh
local produce, gumboot throwing, live music, the annual
best apple pie contest and a 2016 first the Apple Hunt.
The festival will also be held in conjunction with the
Championships for the Australasian Guild of Town Criers.
Participants dressed in full regalia attended the Harvest
Festival launch to offer a preview into the competition.
Guild president and Ballarat town crier, Brian Whykes
said he looked forward to celebrating both the Guild
Championships and the annual Harvest Festival.
Market stalls and yield-inspired menus will also be available
at local businesses situated along the Avenue of Honour and
throughout the Main Street.
Moorabool Shire councillor Paul Tatchell said the festival
was a fantastic way to maintain the integrity of what Bacchus
Marsh was built on.
To take agriculture out of Bacchus Marsh is a bit like taking
the beach out of Port Fairy, he said.
People come here for a reason and this rich soil that has
been developed over hundreds of years doesnt happen by
accident; it takes the toil and it takes the love of people who
have an affinity with the land to pick up that soil and turn it
into something that continues to generate into generations.
When we open up the Avenue of Honour on Sunday we
will have the perfect opportunity to introduce people to
agriculture and the perfect opportunity to introduce them
to not just any agriculture, but probably the best agriculture
in Australia.

The worlds first residential
village for the gay, lesbian,
bisexual, transgender and
intersex community may be
jeopardised by the application of a fifth planning permit extension.
Linton Estate, which after
eight years has successfully
applied for four extensions
and three amendments, celebrated the first turning of
the soil in Ballan on Thursday (March 3).
The $46-million project will
be comprised of 120 singlestorey independent living
units with one to three bedrooms, but only if approved
by Moorabool Shire Council.
The initial permit for the
Estate dates back to January
2008, which was approved
by Council under the conditions that works would
commence within two years
and be completed in no more
than ten. However, the permit was further amended
in March 2011 and January
and November 2012. An extension was also approved
in February 2012, March
2013 and again in December
2014, with a warning that the
permit could not be further
extended.
Further conditions were issued, stating that works had
to commence by January 28
of this year and be completed by the same date in 2025.
However, Moorabool Shire
Council has confirmed that
yet another permit extension has been lodged by the
developers.
Applicants have the right to
apply at any time up to six
months after the expiry of a
permit.

launch, said he had some
concerns in regards to a permit that was technically out
of date.
The reason why I didnt attend is because if this comes
back to council, and council
had gone out there to support the turning of the soil, it
could create some problems
in terms of having a predetermined position, he said.
I have nothing against
the project, I just think that

we need to be very careful
when permits are on the
edge. Im glad they have a
backer for the development
but at the end of the day, this
project costs ratepayers a lot
of money. Its been running
around since 2007 and the
ratepayers pick up the tab on
the statutory planning for it;
there have been a number of
different models and every
time that happens it creates
a bill for council.
A spokesperson for Moorabool Shire Council said the

application for an extension was currently being
assessed by council officers
and would be determined at
a council meeting soon.

Pedestrian safety promise kept

New pedestrian crossings in
Ballan have received the green
light and are due to be operational by mid-2016.
Member for Buninyong, Geoff
Howard joined Moorabool
Deputy Mayor, Paul Tatchell
and local residents on Friday
(March 4) to welcome the announcement of the Inglis Street
crossings, after a pre-election
promise in 2014.
Mr Howard said residents
had previously raised their
concerns with him about pedestrian safety.
Recent consultations with
the Ballan community indicated that the hospital precinct
and the Fisken Street intersection have equal priority for
safety improvements, he said.
A survey of participants also
found that a crossing with
lights was not a preferred option, and therefore Im pleased
to say that the funding allocated to the project will be able to
deliver two raised zebra crossings instead.

The State Government has
funded the $150,000 project,
which will see the new crossings built on Inglis St, near
Cowie Street and Fisken Street.
The crossings will also be fitted with reflectors in order to
ensure they stand out.
Moorabool Deputy Mayor,
Paul Tatchell said the extra
crossings would boost safety
for pedestrians along Inglis
Street.
Two is better than one, with
people accessing the hospital
and shopping precincts to benefit from these safety improvements, he said.
Not only are we getting
more bang for our buck but the
design of the new crossings
maintains the rural atmosphere of our town. I congratulate the Victorian Government
and VicRoads for listening to
the community, ensuring that Geoff Howard (Member for Buninyong) has led the charge for a pedestrian crossing in

A man died following a

crash on the Western Freeway in Darley last Saturday
morning.
Its believed the man was
driving a truck east bound,
between the Gisborne Road
on-ramp and the Avenue of
Honour off-ramp, when it
left the road about 7.15am.
The truck drove off the left
side of the road, through a
guard rail and struck a tree.
Emergency services attended, however the man died at
the scene.
No one else was injured
and no other vehicles are believed to be involved.
The exact circumstances
surrounding the collision
are yet to be determined.

Dob in a dealer

Local criminals who produce and sell the drug ice
have been targeted by a
nation-wide operation.
The Australian Government and Crime Stoppers
Australia have rolled out a
campaign titled Dob in a
Dealer to help ice stricken
communities across the
country.
The $1million operation
calls on local residents to
help rid their streets of the
drug by confidentially giving information to Crime
Stoppers.
Minister for Justice Michael
Keenan said the Government had visited 15 regional
and rural towns with the
campaign during 2015.
We know there are communities out there struggling with ice, and its members of those communities
who hold the key to helping
stop the devastation that ice
wreaks on families and individuals, he said.
The National Ice Taskforce
has provided a robust response to ice and one of the
important strategies identified is to disrupt supply. All
law enforcement agencies
are collaborating in ice detection, but Dob in a Dealer

is a community engagement
campaign focused on gathering local intelligence and
engaging every Australian
in contributing to making
their communities safer
places.
Whilst critics have previously declared that Australians wont dob, Crime Stoppers research and experience
demand otherwise. Crime
Stoppers Victoria experienced an increase of over 150
per cent in illicit drugs and
ice reports throughout the
2015 campaign, in addition
to the more than 60,000 Victorians who used the confidential community service
last year.

Eagles to experience new leader

Learmonth says he looks
forward to utilising his previous coaching experiences
to help move the senior team
forward.
Signing on for the 2016
season, Learmonth has credentials that are certainly
impressive. A senior coach
for Darley in the Ballarat
Football League for a period
of five years, Learmonth saw
the Devils play in two of his

three seasons at the helm,
including one that came
within a kick of a premiership in 2008.
Standing down in 2011, he
stayed on with Darley as the
under-16s coach and has also
been involved in football
throughout Golden Valley,
Bendigo, Central Australia
and South Africa.
Ive had quite a lot of experiences coaching as well as
playing at both a junior and

senior level, and I think that
is something that I can definitely bring to the game,
Learmonth said.
I have different experiences in trying to improve and
develop players and I plan to
utilise that throughout this
season. We have recruited
reasonably well and our first
goal is to obviously try and
finish in the top four; we
have a bit of work to do to
catch Springbank, but I dont

think we are far away. Once
finals come around we will
re-set our goals again.
Learmonth said he looked
forward to getting to know
the players, understanding
how they play and ultimately helping them to improve
for the future.

The importance of observing the fire danger period was

highlighted in the Bacchus Marsh Court last Friday.
Two men, in separate cases, pleaded guilty to lighting fires
inside the Fire Danger Period, when it is illegal to light a fire.
Outside the Danger Period a permit must also be sought.
The CFA were alerted and attended the residence of Paul
Psaila from Darley, who put wood he had collected in a metal
drum and begun to burn it on the 16 November last year.
The court heard the accused became abusive before he finally
agreed to put out the illegal fire, and when interviewed by
police he claimed the whole situation was a (expletive) joke,
a statement he later retracted saying it wasnt a joke and he
was just upset at the time.
Magistrate Gregory Robinson ordered him to pay $350 to
the CFA and was put on a two-month good behavior bond,
noting he wasnt the biggest firebug in the world.
The second case involved Ai D Nguyen who also pleaded
guilty to starting a fire during the fire danger period.
The court heard Mr Nguyen on 22 November 2015 lit a fire
on his farm in an open area to get rid of general waste. The
fire was left unattended and the CFA were alerted, before
attending the scene and putting it out.
With no prior history the accused was ordered to make a
$250 donation to the CFA.

March meeting saw robust
discussion during public
question time.
Held at the Lal Lal Hall, the
meeting saw six ratepayers
take advantage of the opportunity to raise questions
during public question time.
Speakers raised issues
such as the termination of
crche services in Bacchus
Marsh; one speaker asked if
council will re-introduce microphones at council meetings; and one speaker was
concerned about a planning
permit application heard at
a previous council meeting.
Points of Order were called
three times during the session to keep the speakers on
track, by Mayor Allan Comrie, as well as Woodlands
Ward Councillor Pat Toohey
and West Ward Councillor
Tom Sullivan.
Art offers infusion of serenity

A splash of colour has brightened
the Day Infusion Unit at Ballan
Hospital thanks to Myrniong artist
Liz Blizzard.
The Moorabool resident has loaned
her painting; Shoreline: Lake Eyre
with Water, to the hospital in order
to lighten the atmosphere of the
room.
My husband (Peter) passed away
from cancer in 2010 so I understand
how difficult a room like this can be,
at times you are waiting for hours on
end, so I hope my painting can help
to provide some sort of calmness,
Ms Blizzard said.
The painting dates back to
2002, Peter and I tripped around
Australia because I was having a
show in Melbourne and Tokyo and
I wanted to do a series of Australian
landscapes. Peter drove and I
sketched, painted and took a lot of
photos and this piece was from this
trip. I wanted to show the expanse
of the landscape and its amazing
because the year we went there was
water in the lake, which is quite rare
now.

Ms Blizzard said she was

approached by the hospital in
regards to her art and after looking
at the empty space, decided the piece
was ideal.
The colours are both subtle and
bright, and I think the piece is quite
happy for people to look at. There are
also a lot of things that people can

think about; they can interpret it in
their own way.
Ballan and District Hospital CEO,

Wayne Weaire said the painting had
provided a wonderful opportunity
to brighten the Day Infusion Unit.
Liz has generously loaned this

piece to us, which is a partnership
with the hospital and a local artist in
order to add some life and colour to a
room that is otherwise a very clinical
room, he said.

Uzbekistan through the

eye of a needle

Traditional, contemporary
and creative is the best way
to describe Wendy Allens
fascinating textile collection.
The Dandenong resident
has been collecting Suzanis
(embroidered textiles) for a
number of years and will be
exhibiting them in Ballans
Omnibus Art Gallery next
month.
Ive been collecting textiles for most of my life, but
about six years ago a friend
who had travelled a lot told
me about these amazingly
vivid textiles and so I started
collecting them, Ms Allen
said.
Suzanis is a Persian name,
meaning embroidery. The
designs vary according to
the different regions that
they are made in. A lot of my
collection dates back to the
1970s and 80s but there are
some very antique ones on
the market too.

Ms Allen said the textiles
were very common in the
Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan, where they were a
normal part of life for women and their children.
Whenever a girl was born
into a family, all the women
the mother, the aunt and
anyone who was old enough
would start embroidering
these beautiful pieces so that
when the girl grew up it was
part of her wedding dowry,
she said.
All of the pieces in my
collection are hand embroidered. The background is
normally hand woven cotton
and the embroidery thread
is silk, but cotton can also be
used. They are just beautiful
with very bright and bold
colours, usually with a red
or yellow background.

from stunning floral patterns to colourful peacocks
and traditional inscriptions.
The textiles range in size,
with some as long as five
metres.
Ms Allen said the entire

collection, which she had
gathered through writing
letters and purchasing online, would be for sale.
I bought them because I
just love looking at them, but
I always had the intention to

sell them and I think this is
the right time to part with
them and let someone else
enjoy their beauty.
Omnibus Art Gallery owner, Tor Roxburgh said she
was really excited about

the exhibition.
Wendy showed me her collection a while ago and Ive
been keen to share it ever
since. The embroideries are
amazingly vibrant and offer
glimpses into Uzbekistani
domestic life. Just seeing
them makes you want to
travel there.
Ms Roxburgh will donate
25 percent of all sales to Clan
Destine Press, an independent publishing company run
by Australian crime and fantasy writer, Lindy Cameron.
The Exhibition of Uzbekistani Suzanis will be open
during the Ballan Autumn
Festival, starting at 6:30pm
on Saturday March 19, then
on the Sunday of the festival 20 March. Omnibus
Art Gallery is situated at

Water critical for golf club

This years Community Development Grant recipients
have been announced but
not without controversy.
After debate, Councillors

voted at the March council
meeting, held at Lal Lal, to
override a recommendation
to grant money to the Bacchus Marsh Arts Council,
instead voting in favour of
spending the money on water tanks for the Ballan Golf
Club.
Ten applications for funding were received, with one

subsequently
withdrawn,
and a total of $195,000 asked
for under the program, with
only five groups successful
under the recommendations in a report provided to
councillors.
Annually, a total of $100,000

is available to community
groups/committees,
community networks, progress
groups and development
associations as seed funding
(and leverage for external
funding opportunities) to
support community infrastructure projects that have
a significant impact on com-
munity development, livability and wellbeing in the

Shire.
Groups can apply for up to
$25,000 through a competitive process involving assessment criteria.
The proposed Coimadai

Fire Brigade community
facility upgrade received a
grant of $25,000; $23,000 was
allocated to the Darley Football/Netball Club for safety
fencing for Darley Park;
The Navigators Tennis Club
received $17,665 for club
improvements; and the Avenue Bowling Club received
$25,000 for the Resurfacing
of the Lorna Lucas Green.
The fifth project originally
recommended to receive
funding was the Bacchus
Marsh Arts Councils public
art project, a total of $9,335
subject to planning permit
approval.
However, Central Ward

Councillor Paul Tatchell said
the unsuccessful applications by the Ballan Golf Club
and the Ballan Scouts were
more urgent and needed the
funding.
If the golf club doesnt

get the tanks for the water,
theyll be back where they

were five years ago with
sand greens, he told the
meeting.
It forms part of our tourism strategy, our health and

wellbeing strategy it forms
a part of the tapestry that is
Ballan.
Cr Tatchell also argued for
the Scouts to receive funding, saying that they have
been homeless for many
years and have to hold meetings in the church hall.
Its time we brought it to
a head; their numbers have
grown
extraordinarily,
theres a lot of kids there.
The money will be used

as leverage; they need to get
a home, and if something
becomes available we want
to make sure theyre in the
running for it.
Standing Orders were suspended to allow councillors
to debate without formalities which projects should be
funded.
Options discussed included putting the Navigators

project into the Capital Improvements funding as part
of the budget; whether the
Coimadai project is coun-
cils responsibility or that of

the CFA; and delaying the
BMAC project; while West
Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan suggested deferring
a decision and East Ward
Councillor Dave Edwards
argued against a deferral.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey spoke out
against the grants process.
The criteria has lost the

plot and lost its way, he told
the meeting.
Cr Toohey said that the golf
club project was critical
and should be funded.
A motion moved by Cr
Toohey saw the BMAC project removed from the successful grants list, replaced
by a $25,000 grant for the
Ballan Golf Club.
Theres a desperate need

for watering facilities at the
golf club, and thats important for community wellbeing and mental health and
fitness it was a sensible decision, Cr Toohey said after
the meeting.
$15,000 was granted to the
Scouts out of the Central
Ward Fund following a motion moved by Cr Tatchell in
urgent business.
Bacchus Marsh Arts Council President Ray Newton

was diplomatic about the decision, saying it was the correct decision for the council
and for ratepayers.
Whilst what were asking

for funding for is going to be
terrific, and I think its a terrific proposal, we need to do
a little bit more work in seeking community grant funding, Mr Newton explained.
We didnt have support
engineering drawings, or
a nominated site. Were excited that all due consideration was given to it, and now
weve got work to do to find
a location, thats our next
step.
Mr Newton said that the
BMAC is also looking at
funding options through
Regional Arts Victoria.
Council staff will work with

BMAC in developing a new
funding application.
Reviewing Community
Development Funds
Following the March council meeting, a review
will be held into the Community Development
Grants program.
Weve got to be sensible about using community
money to get the best possible outcome, Cr
Toohey said after calling for the review in urgent
business.
Youve always got to put need in front of want.
Cr Toohey said that the program originally
stemmed from consultation with the community
but that now council needs to go back to the
community to make sure it is still delivering what
it needs.
We just want to make sure that were in line
with the communitys thinking.

AVENUE OF HONOUR TREE PRUNING
Council will be undertaking aerial inspections and tree pruning works in the Bacchus Marsh
Avenue of Honour from 7 March until 18 March.
These important tree works will be undertaken as part of the ongoing commitment to the
Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour Strategic Management Plan.
Council is periodically undertaking these works to limit the risk to public safety and extend the
life of the trees within the Avenue of Honour.
Works on the trees will be conducted Monday to Friday only between 8am and 5pm.
Trafc and other disruptions will be kept to a minimum and Council apologies for any
inconvenience.
HARMONY DAY CELEBRATIONS 19 MARCH 2016

The number of thefts from
motor vehicles continues to
grow for Moorabool Shire
tradies.
In a three-year period between 2012 and 2015, more
than $106,000 worth of
tools was stolen from cars
throughout the Moorabool
area.

Juniors show off

Millbrook was on fire last

month.
The local Fire Brigade entered a junior team into the
District 15 Rural Championships and came out with
great success.
Held on February 21 at the
Kingston showgrounds, the
championships saw two
Millbrook teams enter the
11-13-year-old age group.
It was the first time in
15-years that Millbrook had
entered a junior team, with
all members competing for
the first time.
Millbrook took out the aggregate shield for the day
after winning a number of
events and placing in others.
Brigade captain Luke Reynolds said the championships
were a fantastic day had by
all.
The teams will now go on
to represent the brigade and
state championships at Colac on April 3, he said.

Theres a homeless ambulance in Blackwood that

needs the communitys help.
The Blackwood and District
Community
Emergency
Response Team are hosting
a garage sale to raise some
much-needed funds for a
home for their ambulance.
The community group is
an initiative of Ambulance
Victoria that ensures reduced response times in
rural areas. The responders
perform basic emergency
pre-hospital care for patients
located in rural or remote
communities.

CERT president, Leonie
Braiser said Ambulance

Victoria had donated an
ambulance, however it was
currently being stored in
the yard of one of the team
members.
It needs a more permanent home, one which will

provide protection from the
elements and which would
also provide storage space
for supplies and an area for
training, she said.
After around 12-months of
searching for an appropriate
home, a solution to use land
near the Telstra exchange
is imminent. Ms Braiser
said the community group
were now looking for donations in order to fund the
development.
Donations can include

money, physical labour or
sellable goods for the upcoming garage sale. To be
held this Saturday (March
12), the fundraising event
will be held from 8am on the
corner of Warner Street and
Greendale-Blackwood Road.
The Blackwood and District CERT, which has been
operating
for
13-years,
covers the communities of
Dales Creek, Blackwood,

councils Development Assessment Committee passed
a motion to allow the business to put up signage, and
to alter road access as well as

a bicycle/delivery zone.
Medical centres are not required to gain a permit to

Authorities cant see the forest for the trees
PAUL
While driving past Lapoinya, just outside Wynyard in

North West Tasmania, a few
weeks back a local farmer
noticed a gathering of people
protesting the clear-felling of
part of the local bush. I have
mentioned this operation
by Forestry Tasmania in a
previous article. I mention it
again this week as an example, in this case a Tasmanian
example, of government and
those they are answerable to,
in this case Forestry Tasmania who is answerable to, in
this case TA ANN (a Malaysian owned company) treating locals with contempt.
Unfortunately this is all too
familiar.
Anyway the local farmer,
Adrian, stopped his car and
asked what was going on. As
he was not so sure of the facts
of the case he invited one of
the local Liberal members of

parliament to his farm for a
cuppa and a chat. In inviting the MP he did mention
that normally he stays out
of protesting and the like
and in fact voted for this MP
at the last election. The MP
accepted his invitation to afternoon tea and a discussion
took place.
As I have written before, the

people protesting this clearfelling are locals and have
repeatedly said they are not
against selective logging but
against clear-felling. Clearfelling means that all trees
and undergrowth, including
ferns, is cleared so that the
floor of the forest is all that
is left. What is not needed, in
many cases as much as 80%,
is stacked in piles and burnt.
That is clear-felling.
In another interesting twist

the Minister responsible for
forestry in Tasmania whose
name I mentioned in a previous article, suddenly resigned recently as did three
members of the board of Forestry Tasmania. It would be
funny if it were not so tragic.
Anyway, back to the visit

by the MP. After the MP left
Adrian sent off an email to
the MP with some points
that had come up at the
meeting. The points below
actually lead on from comments made by the MP.

Next weekend the magnificent canopy of Dutch elms,

showcasing the entrance to
Bacchus Marsh, will draw
thousands of people to the
annual Harvest Festival.
The unprecedented growth
in the region often overshadows the deeply entrenched roots that formed
the foundations of the periurban landmark built on
agriculture; Bacchus Marsh
has never been the path to
Ballarat, it was just conveniently on the same track.
The Avenue of Honour is a
living reminder that everything comes at a price, and
the ultimate sacrifices of
those that have come before
us should never be taken for
granted.
The relationship between
the horrors of war and
agriculture parallels the
struggles in moving forward when all seems lost.
Throughout the War years
munitions and food production worked hand in glove in
providing critical resources
for the War effort.
Behind the beauty of the elm

trees lies a poignant reminder of hope in a time when all
seemed hopeless; today the
low rumble of pumps pushing water and the humming
of tractors fights its way
through the hustle and bustle of progress.
Whist the sweet sound of
working the land fights the
good fight, the unmistakeable aroma of the Harvest
fills the senses with the simplicity of the past, and the
complications faced in the
future.
Barbed wire and the picket
fence are often uncomfortable bedfellows, often at odds
by way of purpose, but one
wouldnt exist without the
other. You cant move forward with direction if you
deny where you came from.
The Harvest Festival gives
us a unique opportunity to
take stock and acknowledge
that without agriculture
we would be as relevant as
a coastal town without a
beach. If we deny our roots
succumbing to the urban
sprawl, we become nothing

more than a sea of rooftops
fading into one without
purpose.
Should the footprints of
the past be lost to a concrete
jungle in the future, and the
grained soil from the fingerprints be washed away by

The living display of the
Harvest Festival is as much
about showcasing the regions agricultural prowess
as it is in educating people
on the constant battles farmers within the peri-urban
face in bringing produce to
the people.
Farming in the peri-urban
is about trying to get a return on investment on land
prices driven by a different
purpose. Whilst the developers have been rumbling
into town on their bulldozers and driving out in Armaguard trucks, land prices
have reached a point of
unsustainability.
Add to that the high cost of

water, power, and the wealth
tax loosely called rates and
you soon come to the realisation that the resilience of the
farming culture is weather
beaten and worn. Succession
farming is continuing to thin
out, and the high entry cost
of agriculture is beyond the
reach of the young farmer.
The supermarket chains
have used the buying power
of corporate ignorance as
they build todays catalogue
with a total disregard for
tomorrows! Its a travesty
that the people that produce
nothing make a comfortable
living from those that produce everything.
The Harvest Festival is not
just about stall sales on the
side of the road; its about
educating our city counterparts on the importance of
agriculture, and teaching
young people that produce
isnt produced in a supermarket; its a living industry
that can re-produce after its
harvested.
Its not like mining where
once the resource is sold, it

cant be sold again; its also
a timely reminder that once
farm land is sold for housing, it wont be farmed again.
The Festival this year includes a bus tour by Farming Moorabool, a group of
young farmers with the slogan together we grow; its a
unique opportunity for people to visit working farming
operations in a broad range
of diverse operations.
People will be able to speak
to our farming community
first-hand about day to day
operations from paddock to
plate; there is no better insight into food production
than the place from whence
it comes.
Other highlights of the festival will be the 60 plus stalls
where the public can purchase farm-fresh produce,
and for the more adventurous there is no greater experience than being able to
enter the farm and pick your
own.
The festival is not just
about how the produce is
produced; there are also

displays on healthy eating
and preparation. There will
be a number of informative
sessions at the Public Hall
with several speakers sharing their knowledge on all
aspects of rural life.
For the kids there is an opportunity to be up close and
personal with real life farm
animals at the petting zoo
or take a ride on a pony in a
controlled space, not to mention a bit of face painting and
the jumping castle to burn
off some energy!
The Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association are represented by a fantastic group
of hard working volunteers.
The Harvest Festival is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the passion and commitment of our local farmers
growing some of the finest
produce you will find in this

Regional yield investment prospers

Regional Victoria is proving to be a solid

investment for property buyers with rental yields
outstripping Melbourne in the three months to
December 31.
New REIV data shows the gross rental yield
for a two-bedroom house in regional Victoria
was 5.2 per cent in the December quarter
significantly higher than the 2.9 per cent recorded
in metropolitan Melbourne.
Three and four-bedroom homes also delivered
solid yields at 4.8 and 4.2 per cent respectively. By
comparison, the same sized homes in Melbourne
delivered returns of 3.2 and 3.1 per cent.
This is great news for investors in regional areas
as the rental yield that is, the propertys annual
rental as percentage of the purchase price - is vital
for financial planning. The ideal combination is
a low purchase price and a high weekly rental,
giving a high yield to an investor.
Yield is often mentioned in relation to property

investment but many of those buying for
investment look at the weekly rental income
rather than the potential yield.
Pay too much for the property and, even if it
commands a healthy rent and shows long term
capital growth, the return on investment will be
lower.
The REIV calculates gross rental yields for the
state every three months with the latest data
showing regional towns dominating the top 20
yields across the state.
With a median house price of $152,500 and a
median weekly rent of $230, three-bedroom
homes in Morwell delivered regional Victorias
highest yield of 7.8 per cent.
Three-bedroom properties also recording high
yields included Shepparton, at 6.7 per cent;
Bairnsdale, 6.5 per cent; Mildura, 6.4 per cent;

Echuca, 6.2 per cent; and Wodonga, 6.1 per cent.
Other towns performing better than regional
Victorias median were Corio at 5.8 per cent yield,
Sebastopol at 5.7 per cent, Wonthaggi at 5.5 per
cent, Kyabram 5.4 per cent, and Traralgon 5.4 per
cent.
While a high yield is no guarantee a property in
a particular area will continue to perform well,
movements in weekly median rents and property
price increases both have a significant bearing on
this.
However, the data provides useful guidelines as
to what areas and property types are seeing yield
growth, which can assist investors when deciding
where to buy.

Division 9 v Victoria
For the third straight season Ballan has progressed into the
Division 9 Grand Final.
After gaining an early lead at afternoon tea, Ballan never
looked back and emerged a seven-shot winner over Victoria.
Alan Love and John Ellery had winning teams on the day,
triumphant by 11 and seven-shots respectively.
Paul McNaughtons rink was out played in the second half
of the contest to fall short by 11-shots.
Ballan manager Eddy Pitcher said the 70-63 victory was just
enough to slide past their opponents.
We were adequate today and there are areas of our game
that Victoria exposed. Its going to take something extra
special to seal the deal in the grand final. Pitcher said.
Whoever we face in the decider will obviously be
deserving of their spot and we have the utmost respect for
the remaining sides in the finals series.
Ballan now has a week off to game plan for the biggest match
on the bowls calendar.
The winner of next weeks preliminary final between
Victoria and Beaufort Golf will face-off against Ballan for the
premiership.
There are some things that

are just worth fighting for,
and a spot in the Australian
Youth Boxing Titles is definitely one of them.
17-year-old Dylan Mallia
will step back into the ring
this May, where he will take
on the nations best young
boxers.
The Bacchus Marsh resident earned his spot in the
national competition after
claiming the youth heavyweight state title in February.
The victory, which was his
second Victorian title fight to
date, saw him win the first
round in less than two minutes by technical knockout.
Mallia will now travel to the
Gold Coast to represent his
state and says he is ready to
take the top honour.
Im going for gold, nothing less. No one will beat
me, Im so confident and Im
performing at my very best,
he said.
If successful, Mallia will go
on to represent Australia at
the 2016 ABIA Youth World
Boxing Championships to be
held in Russia.
To secure my spot would
mean everything to me, he

said.
Unfortunately, I lost by
a split decision last year in
the trials to go to the Commonwealth Youth Games.
I thought I had won and it
really hurt watching some
of my teammates go over, so
making the world championship team is my number
one goal.
