Chapter 1-The Sociological


Point of View

Sociology place in the social


sciences. For example history is the
study of the past which sociologist
are interested in the past.

About sociology in the past and


now. Which Auguste Comte is
considered the founder of sociology.

The different perspectives like


theoretical perspective, functionalist
perspective, conflict perspective,
and interactionist perspective.

Chapter 2- Cultural Diversity

Explained the components of


culture which are symbols,
language, values, and norms.

The difference in culture


between two different types
of people.

The variation within societies


which are the subculture
group and the counterculture

Chapter 4- Social Structure

The difference between an ascribed


status and an achieved status.

Talked about roles and their


expectations and conflict and strain.

competition, conflict, cooperation,
and accommodation.

Chapter 5- Socializing the


Individual

heredity the transmission of genetic


characteristics from parents to children or
environment that gives rise to personality
and social behavior. This debate was
framed in terms of nature versus nurture.

John Locke insisted that each newly born


individual is a tabula rasa. He claims each
of us is born without a personality.

Charles Cooley had the theory of the


looking glass self which refers to the
interactive process by which we develop
an image of ourself based on how we
imagine we appear to others.

George Mead added to Cooleys theory


with the role taking which is the basis of
the socialization process by allowing us
to anticipate what others expect of us.

Chapter 6-The Adolescent in


Society

Adolescence can be
defined as the period
between the normal onset
of puberty and the
beginning of adulthood.

there are 5 characteristics


that generally apply to all
adolescents, these
characteristics are
biological growth and
development, an undefined
status, increased decision
making, increased
pressures, and the search
for self.

Chapter 10-Racial and Ethnic

Race is a category of people who share

Ethnicity generally is based on such cultural


characteristics as national origin, religion,
language, customs, and values.

Minority group is a category of people who


share physical characteristics or cultural
practices that result in the group being
denied equal treatment.

fair-weather liberal, and all-weather liberal.
Discrimination and prejudice arise from a
number of sources like stereotyping,
scapegoating, and the social environment.

Chapter 12- The Family

Chapter 13- The Economy


and Politics

To satisfy the needs of food, shelter, etc every society


develops a system of roles and norms that governs the
production, distribution, and consumption of goods and
services, this system is called the economic institution

The system of roles and norms that governs the distribution of

A monarchy is a type of government in which one person rules

Chapter 14- Education and


Religion

the system of roles and norms is called education.

Tracking is the assignment of students to different


types of educational programs.

Sacred is anything that is considered to be part of

respect, and reverence while profane is anything
considered to be part of the ordinary world and thus
commonplace and familiar.

There are three basic basic types of belief systems

Chapter 15- Science and


Sport

Science is the pursuit of knowledge through systematic


methods

People of genius have existed since ancient time.

Sport refers to competitive games that are won or lost on the


basis of physical skills and are played according to specific
rules.

sport as a social institution is distinguished by the sam seven


characteristics that distinguish modern in austral society
secularization, equality, specialization, rationalization,
bureaucratization, quantification, and the quest of records.

My Personal Reaction

I liked learning about the different roles and groups. I


also enjoyed learning about the looking glass self and
tabula rasa.

I disliked learning about the different institutions


especially the economic, political, and sport institution
ones.
