Reflection of Chapter 1and 2

The book in the first and second chapter introduces

many aspects of the media. In chapter 1, the author
talks about the glut of information from the media that
we are saturated with. The average time that a child
between (8-18) years exposing the media is 5:48 hours
per a day! That proves that we are addicted to the
media that we received through our days. The media
does not only surround us; however we automatically
filter through all the messages we see or hear from it.
The author refers that we should protect ourselves in
this decade from the mass information that we face from
unlimited media. And we can do that by putting our mind
on automatic pilot where mind ignores uninteresting
messages after automatic routines training which
saved a lot of efforts when to make a decision.
Chapter 2 presents a definition of media literacy talks
about the three building blocks that are: personal locus,
knowledge structures and skills. The skills are seven
tools that help people to be more literate such as
Analysis, Evaluation, Grouping, Induction, Deduction,
Synthesis, and Abstracting. Some people have high
levels of media literacy they can see more than the
superficial messages. Furthermore, they can improve
their skills because the media literacy is a continuum,
not category. The author suggests that media literacy is
multidimensional, so we can develop our media literacy
from cognitive, emotional, and aesthetic dimension.

After reading Chapter 1, I felt that we suffer from a

fierce attack from the media that we are exposed to per
a day. The book opened my eyes to the time that I spend
on website, TV shows, movies...etc, without any control.
On the second chapter, the seven skills are considered
as a guide to make me more literate. I think the book will
help me to understand the goal of the media and will
make me more conscious and aware of the mass media
that I live with.
