Conclusions

A good conclusion should have three parts:

1.

Restatement of Thesis
If your thesis is In this paper it will be demonstrated that the greatest challenges facing
Armenia today are pollution and emigration, you may start your conclusion in the following
way: It has been shown that pollution and emigration are the most significant problems
confronting Armenia today. This could be the first sentence of the final paragraph. Note the
verb structure and slightly different language.

2.

Summary of Main Points

The main arguments in your body paragraphs should be briefly summarized. No more than a few
sentences should be needed to do this in a four-paragraph essay.

3.

Broader Conclusions
You could write about how the elements in your thesis relate to each other, how they might be
solved, and how beneficial this could be. You might predict what could happen if the elements
identified in your thesis remain unchanged.

If each of these points is properly addressed, your conclusion will be a substantial paragraph. New
arguments related to the elements of your thesis should not be made in the conclusion.
