MICROSCOPE
Compound Microscope
Compound microscopes are light illuminated.
The image seen with this type of microscope is
two dimensional.
This microscope is the most commonly used.
You can view individual cells, even living ones.
It has high magnification.
However, it has a low resolution
o Meaning?
Resolution
The sharpness of an image
Compound microscope
Has 2 convex lenses
The first lens, near the
specimen, magnifies the
object. Then a second
lens, near the eye,
further magnifies the
enlarged image
For example the first lens
is 40x magnification and
the second has 10x; Total
magnification is 400x

Eye Piece
This magnifies; where you look through to see the
image of your specimen.
They are usually 10X or 15X power.
Our microscopes have an ocular lens power of
10x.

Objective Lenses
These add to the magnification of the scope.
There are usually between 2 and 4 objective
lenses
They range from 4 to 100 times
magnification

Stage Clips
These hold the slide in place
Expensive microscopes allow you to move the
stage clips (slides) with knobs

Images
The image that you see through the eyepiece is
reversed
(flipped right to left) and inverted (flipped top to
bottom).
This means that when you move the slide away
from yourself, the image moves toward you.
Similarly, if you push the slide to the right, the
image heads off to the left.
This is a result of optics used in the lenses.
