In the political, social, legal, economic, and cultural spheres virtually


unparalleledinanyothercountry.saidAtaturk.
Mustafa Kemal Atatrk was born in a three story pink house on
Klahhane Street, Kotkasim District in 1881 in Salonika (present day
Greece).Hejoinedthemilitaryschoolwhenhewas12.Hewasdetermined
to learn how to become a leader by slowly rising through the levels,
Mustafa continued in themilitary academyuntil1905andgraduatedatage
24. Whenhe wasassignedtodifferentpartsoftheOttomanEmpireaspart
ofhismilitaryduties,hesuccessfullycompletedhismissionsgracefully.
In1911, he was assignedtotheOttomanTripolitaniaVilayet(present
day Libya). He later served in Yemen in Arabian Peninsula. In 1914, the
OttomanEmpireenteredtheWW1onthesideofGermany.

In 1915, during the battle of Gallipoli, he courageously helped repel


the British, and Anzac forces, that success gave him a promotion in the
military ranks. Mustafa never suffered adefeatin the military conflicts,but
the Ottoman Empire and Germany lost the War. Present day Turkey was

occupiedby the British, Greek, Italian andFrench.Constantinople(present


dayIstanbul)andcityofIzmirwerealsooccupiedbyAllies.
Mustafa and some fellow commanders were not very happy about
homeland beingoccupied, andthesituation ingeneral, and expressedthis
to the higher ups in the Ottoman Empire. Since Empires hands were tied
asa resultof losing the war and being in financialruin, sonon turkish was
notwelcomedeasily.
At that point, Mustafa Kemal knew he had to start a national
movement against occupying forces. Therefore, Mustafa Kemal resigned
from the military in June 1919. He started the national movement for
Turkishindependence.
InMay 1919, he landed in Samsun and started his unofficialnational
movement. He planned this so intelligently that he contacted each
municipality, and get a confirmation whether they will join his national
movementornot.Thereweresomeresistancesfromsomemunicipality.

My great grandpa, Cakira was in Hopa Mayor's office near present


Georgia when a telegram was receivedfrom Mustafa Kemal that askedfor
a confirmation to join his movement. My great grandpa responded on
behalf of the city mayor saying that theyre with him (6)
. This national
movement lasted 2 and a half years until 1922 atwhich timeall the Allied
Forceslefttheoccupiedterritories.
After which time they signed the Lausanne Treaty in Switzerland
(made on July 24, 1923) which is still in effect today. They established a
new parliament transferring it from Istanbul to Ankara. After a unanimous
vote, Mustafa Kemal became the first president of the Republic of Turkey.
During his presidency, he implemented many intelligent reforms,including
such as abolishing arabic alphabet then bring in a new Turkish alphabet,
and gave women the most important rights to vote and be elected even
beforeUSgavewomentherightstovote.
Turkey was the first Muslim countrytohaveDemocracyasaresultof
thesereformsthatswhyMustafaKemalisreveredandthenameofAtatrk

was grantedtohimin1934bytheTurkishparliament.Ataturkmeansfather
of all Turks. He lived until November 10, 1938. There was a mausoleum
builtforhimtobeburiedwhichiscalled
Anitkabiri
nthecapitalAnkara.
In conclusion the reason why I chose to use Mustafa KemalAtaturk
for my biography is its how I got my name. He made a difference by
providinga community where women camegotoschoolandgeteducation
andpassittheirchildrenliketomygrandmatomydad.

theSvresagreementtheAllies.
