Name of Lesson: Shapely Scavenger Hunt

Grade Level Appropriateness: 2nd Grade

Technology Content Standard Addressed: The National Standard that will be
addressed is that students digital media and environments to communicate and work
collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual and contribute to the
learning of others.
The Math Common Core Standard Addressed: Recognize and draw shapes
having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a
given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals,
pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
Objective: The student will understand how to take digital pictures and put them into a
Power Point presentation with his/her group. The student will understand all the different
shapes and what they look like. The student will be able to easily identify a triangle,
quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, and a cube in their everyday life. They will also be able
to draw a square, triangle, and pentagon.
Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Some kind of camera (digital camera or a
phone camera), Microsoft Power Point, paper, pencil or pen, and different objects that
meet the five different shapes.
Suggested Group Size: 3-4 Students per group
Procedures: First students will get into groups of 3 or 4 students depending on how
many students are in the classroom. THIS IS A PROJECT ASSIGNMENT THAT WILL
NEED TO BE WORKED ON OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM. The students will take
a picture of an object in their households or in their neighborhoods of a triangle,

quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, and a cube. (If students cannot find an object that is this
shape they are more than welcome to draw it out as part of the digital pictures) This part
will only need one picture of each on one slide. The students will have to also explain on
the slide why the shape is what is it. (ex. This is a triangle because it has 3 sides). Then
EACH of the students in the group will have to draw a square, triangle, and pentagon and
be able to tell us why it is that way. There will be THREE pictures total for each drawn
picture and ONE picture total for each picture that is taken digitally of an object. Once all
the students have their pictures and drawings they will put them on a Power Point and
present their Power Point to the rest of their class when the project is finally due. I will
give the students two weeks to work on this project and this project does require some
kind of camera so you can use a parent/guardians cell phone if needed.
Assessment: I will assess their students on whether or not they got the right objects for
their designated shapes. If they were able to draw the shape correctly and be able to
explain why it is that shape, I will also assess the students on their creativity when
making the Power Point presentation, and I will also grade the students on how well as a
team they worked together and how they present their project to their fellow classmates.
