Flex Schedule

for
Intervention
for
Secondary Schools
One very easy method of adapting an existing school schedule to a flex schedule for the
purposes of intervention is to take a designated period of time from each period in the
school day and one minute from each passing period for the proscribed period of
intervention. For example, the normal six period day for a school with an Advisory
period may look as follows:

Period 1 8:00 – 8:49

Period 2 8:55 – 9:45
Advisory 9:51 – 10:33
Nutrition 10:33 – 10:48
Period 3 10:54 – 11:43
Period 4 11:49 – 12:38
Lunch 12:38 – 1:08
Period 5 1:14 – 2:03
Period 6 2:09 – 3:03

For this school, adapting to a flex schedule for intervention might look like this assuming
taking five minutes from each existing period other than Advisory:

Period 1 8:00 – 8:44

Period 2 8:49 – 9:33
Advisory 9:38 – 10:22
Flex 10:22 – 10:52
Nutrition 10:52 – 11:07
Period 3 11:12 – 11:56
Period 4 12:01 – 12:45
Lunch 12:45 – 1:15
Period 5 1:20 – 2:04
Period 6 2:09 – 3:03

For this school, this would work out very nicely, as it would be possible to essentially add
the flex period to the existing Advisory period therefore losing no passing period time
and enabling the school to maximize time for student intervention.
A school that does not have an Advisory period built into its regular schedule might look
as follows:

Period 1 7:50 8:58

Period 2 9:04 10:01
Nutrition 10:01 10:19
Period 3 10:25 11:22
Period 4 11:28 12:25
Lunch 12:25 12:59
Period 5 1:05 2:02
Period 6 2:08 3:05

For this school, adapting to a flex schedule for intervention might look like this by
normalizing each non-flex period to 55 minutes and reducing passing period to five
minutes:

Period 1 7:50 8:45

Period 2 8:50 9:45
Flex 9:50 10:20
Nutrition 10:20 10:35
Period 3 10:40 11:35
Period 4 11:40 12:35
Lunch 12:35 1:05
Period 5 1:10 2:05
Period 6 2:10 3:05

It is important to note that the flex period may be put in place for an agreed to amount of
time. It is recommended that the flex schedule be implemented for two or three weeks
consectutively. It is important to consider each individual schools need when
implementing this schedule once, twice, or three or more times a semester. It is also
necessary to consider that any permanent change to a school bell schedule is subject to
vote of the school faculty.
