iam Floyd Union Free School District of the MASTICS —- MORICHES — SHIRLEY Our rich history builds a promising future! Kevin M, Coster ‘Superintendent of Schools March 9, 2016 Dear Parent/Guardian: ‘The New York State ELA and Mathematics Assessments for students in grades three through eight will begin in April 2016. As a result of feedback received from parents, students and educators, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has made significant changes to these assessments including a decrease in the number of questions and no time limit, giving students as much time as they need to complete the exam. Please log on to hitp:/bit Iy/NYSEDExamChanges to see a memo from the New York State Education Department outlining all of the changes to these assessments. ‘These assessments are mandated by NYSED and serve as a diagnostic measure to ensure student readiness for high school Regents examinations. Additionally, exams provide valuable data with respect to guiding instruction in the classroom, whether curriculum modifications are necessary and students are getting the support they need to be successful. While no single test gives an overall picture of student achievement, when combined with grades and teacher reports, they provide important information about student progress. Assessments also give an objective measure ‘of how your child, the school and our district are performing in comparison to others across the state. While we encourage all students to take these assessments, we also respect parental choice to have their children refuse the exams without penalty. If you have decided to have your child refuse one or more of these exams, we ask that you notify your child’s principal in writing by March 23, 2016, so that we may appropriately plan for assessment days. Children who will not be participating in these exams will complete a quiet activity such as reading a book. Please note that depending on the actual participation rate, examination and/or examination refusal locations are subject to change. Ifyou have any additional questions, please feel free to contact your child’s principal. Thank you in advance for your cooperation, Sincerely, CF Kevin M.
