Introduction

Professional athletesare performers or

entertainers. In this way, they are a lot like
actors and musicians. They must perform well
in each game or risk losing. If they don't play
well, they won't last long.
Basketball was invented in 1891 and itsfirst
professionalleague formed in the 1920s. The
Basketball Association of America formed the
basis of the NBA. Each Big Four league, as well
as Major League Soccer and the Canadian
Football League, averages at least 15,000 fans
in attendance per game.

Nature Of The Work

Athletes spend many hours each day

practicing skills and improving teamwork
under the guidance of a coach or a sports
instructor. They view videotapes to
critique their own performances and
techniques and to learn their opponents'
tendencies and weaknesses to gain a
competitive advantage.

Working Conditions

Athletes often exposed to conditions,

equipment, and situations that may produce
cuts or bruises. This usually applies to athletes
who participate in contact sports. Often work
outdoors in stadiums, on courses, or at
tracks. They also may work indoors in field
houses, covered stadiums, and ice rinks. Often
come into close physical contact with
other athletes. Many people wear protective
gear, such as helmets and pads. Athletes are
occasionally exposed to sounds and noise levels
that are distracting and uncomfortable.

patients practicing exercises and
functional activities, under direction of
medical staff.
