Ms. Libby Kent was a student in my ecology course in the fall of 2015. She met or exceeded all
outcomes of the course. She demonstrated particular skill in clearly and completely explaining
complex ecological concepts and relationships. She effectively used a variety of mathematical
models and was adept at analyzing scientific information presented in a variety of formats.
She paid close attention to criteria. She asked appropriate clarifying questions that
demonstrated that she had already paid attention to written directions and criteria. She not only
used the criteria effectively herself, she assisted her team in successfully meeting them.
In her major research project, she and her research partner exceeded all criteria for scientific
research reports. They developed a scientifically valid hypothesis, based on a reading of the
literature, that water temperature would influence dissolved oxygen levels. They planned and
carried out appropriate research methods, performed an appropriate statistical test, correctly
evaluated the results based on the statistical analysis, and appropriately evaluated the meaning
of the study in the context of other studies. The written research report was clear and complete.
It followed scientific conventions, including the use of clear and appropriate figures, and
correctly cited 4 primary sources. The oral presentation of the experiment was clear, well
organized, accompanied by professional-quality media, and presented in an appropriately
engaging style. It followed scientific presentation conventions.
Each student acted as a peer reviewer for another report. Ms. Kent provided many useful,
constructive suggestions.
Ms. Kent demonstrated excellent professional behaviors. She attended all class meetings,
consistently arriving on time and making good use of all learning opportunities. She consistently
turned in her work on time. She participated effectively in class discussions, and helped her
peers to succeed in the course. She has shown excellent potential as a biology teacher.
Sincerely,

Rebecca S. Burton
Professor and Chair of Biology
