Homonyms are words like fare and fair, which sound the same but are spelt
differently and have different meanings; or words like desert (a dry place) and
desert (to run away from something), which have the same spelling but sound
different and have different meanings.
Homonyms like fare and fair are also called homophones because they sound
the same. Homonyms like desért and desert are also called homographs
because they look the same. Some homonyms like bow (to bend over) and bow
(the front of a boat) are both homophones and homographs.
The word homonym means ‘the same name’ (homo, the same; nym, name);
the word homophone means ‘the same sound’ (homo, the same; phone, »
sound); the word homograph means ‘the same writing’ (homo, the same;
graph, writing). For convenience, we will call them al! homonyms.
