Persuasive Speech: Audience Assessment
Specific Goal: My audience will understand the importance of washing their hands when every
opportunity presents itself. And not only that, they will want to use more Hand Sanitizer in-between hand
washes.
Type of Claim: This is a Claim of Value. My audience members will see the worth in using more hand
sanitizer.
Ethos: Primary Ethos:
a) I wash my hands when needed, use hand sanitizer on top that and I cant even remember the last
time I was sick.
b) I will mention the benefit of using hand sanitizer and that its not a cure for everything BUT just as
important as washing your hands.
Secondary Ethos: I will cite three references.
Audience Assessment: Highly Favorable.
Adaptation to Audience Attitude:
a. Common ground: I will use our work place as a common ground. Call centers are like a huge
science project with all the coughing and sneezing and not knowing if others wash their hands.
b. Latitude of acceptance: With sharing our common ground, medical and or statistical evidence, I
dont think there would be much reason to to oppose washing your hands regularly and using hand
sanitizer as well.
Baby Steps: I am just going to reinforce the importance of washing your hands and the baby step is for
everyone to commit to using hand sanitizer at least 5 times a day.
Pattern of Organization: Motivated Sequence.

Persuasive Speech: Outline

Keep it clean!
Introduction
I. Hook: We are always taught as children that washing our hands is important. But, have any of you
thought about how important it really is? I didnt, until I started to really look into it.
II. Ethos: What triggered this thought in my mind, as I walked around at work I noticed that there was a
lot of coughing and sneezing all around me. But, I couldnt even tell you the last time I was sick. It
got me thinking about what I may be doing that others are not.
III. Proposition (or Hint at Proposition): With never getting sick and working in a living pea-tree dish, I
believe I have found the key to success.
IV. Preview: I am going to explain
1. Why we need to wash our hands.
2. What could happen if we dont wash our hands?
3. What could happen if we wash our hands to much?
4. What is an alternative besides soap and water?

Transition: I know that everyone knows the importance of washing your hands. But, I want to paint that
picture a little bit better for you.
I.

Body
Why we need to wash our hands.
A.
According to an article entitled Information on Water Related Hygiene from the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention, they provide some facts on what washing
your hands really does for the people around us.
i. It is estimated that washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrheal diseaseassociated deaths by up to 50%.
ii. Also, they state that if everyone routinely washed their hands, a million deaths a year
could be prevented.
B.
Also according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, they provide proper
technique to washing hands
i. Wet your hands, with hot or cold water.
ii. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with soap. Make sure to scrub the backs of
your hands and under your finger nails.
iii. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. (You can gauge the time by singing Happy
Birthday from beginning to end, TWICE.)
iv. Rinse your hands.
v. Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them.
vi. And repeat, 6 times per day.

Transition: Now that I have refreshed your memory why its important to wash your hands and how you
should wash your hands, I am going to talk about some things that could happen if you dont wash your
hands.
II.

What could happen if we dont wash our hands?

A.
According to Occupational Health & Safety they talk about the germiest places in the
Workplace.
i. Office Phones can harbor more than 25,000 germs per square inch.
ii. Water Fountains can harbor as many as 2.7 million bacteria per square inch on the
spigot.
iii. Keyboards can actually have more than 200 times as many bacteria as a toilet seat.
B.
According to the article Diseases you can get from not washing your hands after
bathroom use on Livestrong.com, they share some of the most common things that you
could potentially encounter.
i. Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease
ii. Hepatitis A

Transition: You now know the additional importance of washing your hands and what could happen if you
dont. But, what could happen if you wash your hands to much?
III.

What could happen if we wash our hands to much?

A.
According to a news article on KSL.com, they provide some information form The
American Academy of Dermatologists with what may happen if you wash your hands too
much.
i. 60 health care workers who wash their hands 10 times per day volunteered for a study
at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. Of those 60 people, 63%
of them were diagnosed with a hand disease called Dermatitis.

Transition: With this new information in mind, we need to find a way to keep our hands clean, without
washing them too much.
IV.

What is an alternative besides using soap and water?

A.
According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, they say that you can prevent
Dermatitis without giving up hand washing and you can do this by using an Alcohol-Based
product, AKA, Hand Sanitizer.
I.
Make sure that your choice of hand sanitizer has at least 60% Ethyl Alcohol.
II.
Use at least a U.S. quarter sized amount. (Make sure all your hand is wet)
III.
Rub together for around 15 seconds or until completely dry.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, you have now had a refresher course on why we need to wash our hands on a regular basis,
what could happen if we dont take the time to wash our hands regularly and some new alternatives with
what you could use instead of the regular soap and water to help avoid over washing. With working in one
of the largest pea-tree dishes around and not ever getting sick, I hope that today I have shown you that I
did crack the code. But, before I go, I have one ask of you, use hand sanitizer at least two three times a
day in place of soap and water and dont be surprised if it makes a difference in your daily health. Thank
you.
