Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea

Blurb: From the people who brought you the logo movie. Lego World.
Idea for my TV advert:
2 Lego people walk on to the scene. These two people will be the main characters of the TV
series called Wendy and Jim. You will follow them both with their friends on their adventures
that will hold disasters and joy around every corner. The TV advert will consist of the two
building their new house this represents the new tv show Lego World is starting. After the
two have started building their house you will see snippets of the first episode. The first
episode is called Birthday Party Disaster. You will see Jim preparing their new house for
Wendys birthday, putting up banners and balloons. You will see their friends arriving with
presents. One calls out Oh No I left Wendys present at home and the party starts in 5
minutes! Im going to miss the surprise! .The scene then cuts back to Wendy and Jim
finishing their house. Saying I cant wait to start our Journey here at Lego World. The TV
advert ends with Wendy and Jim jumping in the air.
My target audience is both male and female of the age group between 5-10. This is because
my brief is aimed towards children. So this is why I based my TV advert on a product that
both girls and boys will play with and that they will enjoy to watch - Lego. This is also
because The Lego Movie was a big hit when it came out for younger viewers as well as
older viewers.
I think I should make this advert because I like The Lego Movie and have watched it
numerous of times, so I will find it easy to make a stop motion animation that both girls and
boys at a young age will enjoy. I can also relate to younger target audiences as I use to
babysit and I have younger family members so I know what contents are suitable for them to
watch.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Another reason why I should make this stop motion advert is because I have previous
experience working with Premier Pro and have done previous stop motion work before. This
shows that I have experience in all creative departments as I have made storylines and TV
adverts previously before for Vibe Productions.

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

I will meet the requirements of my brief by making sure that my TV advert is suitable for
children between the ages of 5 and 10 which is also appealing to both genders. By doing
this I will have no swearing in and noncomplex grammar as this will make it suitable to
them to watch. I will also have 2 main characters one consisting of a girl and boy so that it
is more appealing for the genders to watch because if there is only one main character it
may make one gender less appealed to the show. Also to make my advert more appealing
to both genders my advert will consist of things that arent sexists such as just a Lego car
advert as it will mean only boys will be more appealed. I have to include something that
both genders will like.
I will also meet the requirements of my brief by making sure that the advert doesnt go
over 30 seconds long. Another way I will meet the requirements is that my advert must be
stop motion animation and be exciting for the viewers to enjoy.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
Throughout the making of my TV advert I will need to consider health and safety issues
that I may encounter. I will be creating my TV advert in the studio. The main health and
safety issue in the studio will be the lights, this is because they get very hot while they are
on. I also need to be careful because the ceiling is low where the lights hang, I need to
make sure that I dont hit my head on the hot lights. Another health and safety issue that I
will need to take into consideration is the wires that might be on the floor this can be a
tripping hazard.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
I may face a couple legal issues throughout the making of my stop motion animation
advert. This can include the use of the soundtrack I use to prevent legal issues I will need
to contact the company that created the soundtrack to see if I am allowed to use it and get
permission from them before using it. I have to also look into plagiarism to see if there is
any similar TV adverts like my idea, to prevent copyright.
I also need to be careful with the contents throughout my advert because my brief has
given me a specific target audience, I could face legal issues if I breach the law
throughout my brief. I could also face legal issues from OfCom if my advert doesnt reach
there requirements.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Why are you using that particular format?

I will be using these two particular formats because my brief specifically says that I must
make stop motion animation advert and to make stop motion animation I will need to use
stop frame technique, because I need to take picture by picture to create the animation. I
have also chosen modelling as a format because my stop motion animation advert is based
on Lego. So I must use Lego models in my advert.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
The different possibilities I can explore with the use of Lego modelling is the fact that it is
easy to build my set as well as creating it however I like, and it is easy to fix or change if I
dont like my original set. Another possibility I can explore with Lego modelling is the fact I
can make my set colourful so its more appealing towards my target audience. Also with the
use of Lego modelling I can create my own characters and build them to what I want them to
look like. They are also easy to move as they have joints. The possibilities I could explore
using stop frame technique is endless, as all I have to do is take a picture at a time of my
models moving. I can also move my Lego people because they have joints / limbs. I can also
change my characters facial expression by changing the head of the characters because
they have detachable.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
I may have some problems with my chosen formats, one problem that might occur is the fact
that I could run out of storage because I will be taking a lot of images with the stop frame
technique. Another problem that may occur is the fact that Lego isnt flexible

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

I liked this stop motion animation of Lego because it was creative as well as the stop motion
flowed really well when the Lego people hit the golf ball, they had taken enough stop frames
for it to run smoothly. Another reason why I chose this clip is because the set is very well
made.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGeanX-xBYo

I chose this clip of Lego stop motion as it was funny and had the use of sound effects from
the Simpsons. I also liked the way when they sped up the stop motion of Homer building the
Christmas tree. But then changed the pace back to normal pace they had throughout the
rest of the clip
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1t4LmFgN6g

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

I like this clip because of the use of special effects. For example when the Lego man was
shot the use of fake blood was used in the stop motion as well as bullet holes in objects I
thought this was effective than just having the Lego man to fall over.

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
The subject of my animation is Lego advert, called Lego World.

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
2 Lego people walk on to the scene. These two people will be the main characters of the TV
series called Wendy and Jim. You will follow them both with their friends on their adventures
that will hold disasters and joy around every corner. The TV advert will consist of the two
building their new house this represents the new tv show Lego World is starting. After the
two have started building their house you will see snippets of the first episode. The first

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
The two main characters in my animation advert will be Wendy and Jim, who are two Lego

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Add in images and drawings/ sketches of what they will look like.

What will they be made of?

Lego

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

As my characters are made out of Lego, it will be easy to move them this is because they
have joints. This will allow me to move each one of their legs to show they are walking as
well as their arms, so they can pick things up as well as move the arms up and down to look
more realistic.

What is the purpose of an armature?

Armature is the wire that helps you build characters from plasticine or clay. The purpose of
armature wire is to make the movement of models a lot easier as the armature wire is a
skeleton which allows the model to move easy as the wire is flexible, it allows the model to

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

move freely and stay in place. Famous stop motion animators such as Aardman Animation
use armature wire to create their models.

Will you use them for your characters?

No I will not be using armature wire for my characters, this is because my characters are
made from Lego. Which is already built plastic toys with joints so they are easy to move.

If so, how will you make it?

Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing
ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the
different shots.

What audio will you have for your animation?
An upbeat song that attracts my target audience.

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

I will need sound effects for my lego people moving and building

Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
I will be aiming my TV advert to both male and female. This is because my brief specifically
says I should aim my advert to both genders so its fair.

Age
My target audience is the age group of 5-10, I have to make sure that advert is suitable for
this age group as they are classed as children. My brief also says that I must make the
advert suitable for this age group as Vibe said I must target it towards 5-10 years olds

Interests
My target audience interests include watching cartoons, playing with Lego, drawing as well
as playing sports. This is because they are young and enjoy doing and watching fun things
that interests them as they are learning new things.

What forms of animation might they already watch?

My target audience watch animation such as cartoons which include Adventure Time,
SpongeBob, Scooby Doo and Rugrats.

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

I think that my target audience enjoy watching colourful images, because they are young and
imaginative which is why they enjoy watching these colourful images as it keeps them
entertained and doesnt lose their focus.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?
My target audience may find violence and swearing offensive as they are a young target
audience that shouldnt be seeing or hearing bad things as they are young they are always
learning and can pick up bad habits if content is offensive to their age group.
My target audience may find my advert distasteful if the advert isnt colourful and upbeat to
fit the target audiences needs and interests.

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
I will ensure my stop motion animation advert is suitable for my target audience by having
the right content in my advert so that it is child friendly, as well as taking their interests into
consideration as I know children 5-10 like colourful animation. To ensure that my advert is
suitable, I will watch similar TV adverts that link to my idea.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
My target audience will be able to watch my animation on TV, as it is an advert.

You will need to add pages to this section for your full storyboard

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Frame Rates
What is the duration of your animation in minutes? (minimum 30 seconds)
My animated advert is 30 seconds long. My brief also says specifically it must be 30
seconds. This is because most TV adverts arent very long.

In seconds?

How many frames per second for video?

30

There are 60 seconds in a minute. How many frames (ie. Individual photos) will you
need to take?
1800 photos

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

I will be taking my images for my animation in the studio

Does it have natural daylight?

No, the studio doesnt include natural daylight. The studio has its own lighting which I can
adjust to get the right lighting for my images.

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

Yes I have a constant light source that I can adjust. The lights are on the ceiling, known as
spot lights.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
The light source I am using is already attached to the ceiling so I am unable to move them,
but I can move the table and my set to cause interesting effects with lights.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Frame numbers
You will need to label your images as frames
The first 24 frames will be written as;
0_1
0_2 etc etc

the following 24 will be

1_1
1_2
1_3
Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
